There goes my education :suicide: [sp]Maybe... Certainly hope not[/sp]
Well if your family is impacted heavily by a default if it happens, why not suggest that your family emigrate from the US? There are many great countries around the world, such as Canada, Sweden, Germany and Australia. Tonnes more too.
Both situations? Really? The US is founded on many principles, including being a Representative Democracy. That is, representatives are voted in by the people. What you're suggesting is approaching totalitarianism. Why should the white house have any authority to eliminate representatives elected by the people? I don't agree with the Republicans on many things, but that doesn't mean they should be killed because of it.
I was being facetious 'cause the Republicans are dicks.
Shouldn't there be SOME way for the President to do SOMETHING if Congress is in a deadlock??
There probably isn't, but there should be. Although it wouldn't really work with a president who is aligned with either of the two parties, because bias isn't fair. The governor general in Australia isn't aligned with any political parties for example, she is simply a representative of the Queen.
If they can't afford education, what makes you think they can afford to move to a different country?
LoLWaT never suggested he was poor. It's also not as if fees for sending students to a public school will raise either, because public schools will actually shut down. If LoLWaT is serious about education, he can either go to a private school (which might work out financially worse than emigrating), or emigrate. Simple. Well of course, one could wait until government services open up again.
This really sucks because my entire education is based on government grants and scholarships. I'm basically fucked.
This really sucks because my entire education is based on government grants and scholarships. I'm basically fucked.
It sucks as because I'm in the same situation. I REALLY wish that they disbursed financial aid earlier, but nope! It's supposed to be disbursed Aug 6 :(
Well, i'm not going into details... But I can say that we aren't well enough off financially for private school. We're not seriously poor though... On top of that I know my mom wouldn't think of emigrating, but she never really talks to me about these things either... Guess i'll just have to kick back and see what happens
It will be bad, but it probably won't be that bad. Your circumstances suck, so it is best just to see what happens.
Anyone check the exchange rates for the US Dollar for the past month?
Anyone check the exchange rates for the US Dollar for the past month?
Compared to the AUD, it's devalued very much actually. 1 AUD = 1.0996USD, that's the highest I've ever seen the USD in comparison to the AUD actually. I think earlier this month it was around 1.07USD or something like that.
It sucks as because I'm in the same situation. I REALLY wish that they disbursed financial aid earlier, but nope! It's supposed to be disbursed Aug 6 :(
Same here, I have to get Financial aid for my college, and now with this shit going down, well, my family is screwed. I think by August 3rd, the news lines will say US Debt Defaulted or something about the default.
Well, my father left a house for me in Germany when he died for a reason....

[editline]30th July 2011[/editline]
Well, my father left a house for me in Germany when he died for a reason....
Why do you have a Nazi avatar?
guys, the world won't stop moving. The states will still have money for at least a year, It'll be harsh on the economy, but it won't collapse entirely. They will declare martial law if it gets any worse than a few riots.
So what happens with the US if it defaults? Will it cause the stocks to go up? Will it destroy the economy even more? My parents lost a huuuge amount of money due to this.
As far as I know with my substandard knowledge of finance, a default may mean that America's credit rating will drop from AAA to AA making it a less secure place to invest. Immediate response would probably be an increase in interest rates as well as people with investments in America worrying about those investments.
Hey. Hey guys that we call 'our government'. You're running a country full of millions of lives. Stop being a bunch of highschool cheerleaders and do something right.
God dammit, why can't we do what the Combine did and just kill everyone over 60?
Lol repubs, fuck you.

Kids, listen. For those of you who can, go out and start buying things that you'll need. When you go shopping, what do you normally buy? Get that, stock up, non-perishable foods, grab something to boil water or purify it, and if you want and can do so, buy a really cheap Mosin-Nagant for 100 bucks, and some cheap ammo. I suggest this because there's some of you out there who aren't armed and you ought to be. You might want to buy a few packs of cigarettes, even if you don't smoke and don't intend to. If it all goes south, you'll at least have a leg up on everyone else when they rush to grab things. Tell nobody about what you've bought, hide it and keep it a secret. It may sound a bit crazy and tinfoil hatter, but please consider the full implications of what's happening here. People riot over sports games, what the hell do you think this is going to do? If nothing happens, you'll just have a bunch of crap you'd normally have anyways, in addition to an awesome rifle. This isn't panic, this is thinking ahead. You might want to consider ways to leave any big urban areas if there's a lot of tension in the air and panic. Have relatives in the sticks? Visit them. Just be mindful that bad things can easily happen and it takes very little to spark them. If need be, you're better off being prepared than not. I must stress, buy nothing perishable, nothing that requires electricity or infrastructure of any kind. You won't have this opportunity later.
Shouldn't there be SOME way for the President to do SOMETHING if Congress is in a deadlock??
How about people do something instead?

Badly.
Just wondering (too lazy to Google it) but is the United States able to hold referendums on a federal level? We can have referendums here, an example of such a referendum was with recognising the rights of Indigenous peoples a few decades back. Surely if the Congress is in deadlock a referendum should take place, maybe offering the choice between Reid's and Boehner's proposals. I think it might be too late to host one though, seeing as we only have a few days left and you couldn't count so many votes so quickly.
Life's going to continue on as it did before. Badly.
Of course, but this country is a powder keg right now. I'm usually good at guessing what's going to happen but this is one time where I actually don't know how it's going to turn out. I'm honestly a bit disturbed and scared, but I'm as ready as I'll ever be for whatever happens. If we do default, I wonder how far it'll reach into services for the average American. I partially rely on SS income, as I'm stuck back at home with my mom. I'm pretty hopeful that will not be touched, there's safety nets in place so it won't be but I'm prepared for a worst-case scenario.
Just wondering (too lazy to Google it) but is the United States able to hold referendums on a federal level? I don't know, though.
Has it really come to this?
Has it really come to this?
Sadly, I believe it has.
Has it really come to this?
Unfortunately, yes.
So, That's it, I am moving to Canada ASAP. How long does it take to become a citizen, and does it speed it up if you have family from there?
I'll be honest with all of you... I've actually considered buying a gun because I'm scared of what comes next month. I might just be paranoid, but too me the gun is nothing more then insurance when shit hits the fan.
