I had to go without adblock for a while on my PC because it wasn't working after an update. My antivirus went fucking ballistic on common websites like youtube or news websites, porn websites on the other hand had no problems with viruses or malware. Hell I used to whitelist sites I liked or used a lot to support them, until I got 3 virus alerts from different websites on the same day. I've done almost 2 years of study in IT and it has been drilled into me that security is the absolute number 1 concern.
If you want to advertise to me I don't mind, just do it through a sponsorship so I don't have to worry about my system getting infected because ad servers can not be trusted.
sounds more like you had a terrible AV
Counterpoint: why should I install another app to do what my web browser can do? It's like having to install an app on a phone for every website ever when I can just use the default web browser.
If you're running multiple email accounts mail clients are handy as fuck.

Uh, what antivirus are you using?
I can't help but feel like "malware!" is a convenient excuse to justify this. I mean seriously, what kind of sites are you browsing where you'd run into those ads anyways? If you're talking about ads like on PirateBay and other shady file sharing sites (to name a few) then block them all you want if it gives you a sense of security (or gets rid of those annoying lewd ads). But I can't see how you can justify blocking anything else, especially since most sites use Google AdSense or whatever and typically shouldn't have malware. These ads are what lets us browse most of the internet for free, and I would be very sad if a large part of the once-free internet switches over to subscription based payment systems just because a lot of people are blocking ads.
I'll have you know I don't block all sites indescriminately. I have a few web-sites exceptions because I am fully aware that some content creators needs ad money to keep going.
At the same time, I don't mind paying money for a service or a product that I feel deserves it. I've been supporting content creators on patreon and gave some donations to people I care about.
Even if ads didn't contain malware, some sites compensates for the people adsblocking by jamming even more ads so that the select few who don't have a blocker have to suffer through pages full of shit. That and when I'm just surfing around the net casually, checking some sites or videos out, I don't want to have to deal with that shit.
In other terms : Ads are fucking annoying shit and I'd rather not have to deal with them whatsoever. The only place I accept ads is when I'm actively looking for something, because then I'm an interested consumer, not a "Potential" one.
You guys are using ad blockers and are seriously trying to make them out to be the bad guy?
I mean, ad blockers are so common nowadays that they actually put quite a dent in revenue, you really can't blame them
when ads stop being a dent in my bandwith cap, stop giving me viruses, and stop popping up everywhere, then ill turn it off
When it comes to small sites that I visit regularly I can understand having adblock disabled, but for juggernauts like yahoo, google, youtube, facebook, twitter etc. I'll use adblock all I want so fuck off
If you're not using adblock these days you're pretty much guaranteed to get infected with something at some point, first thing I do on any computer I use is install a decent browser such as firefox with adblock, noscript, HTTPS everywhere and request policy.
Since most infections come from web browsing you'd be a fool to not do everything possible to improve your security, the side benefit of reduced bandwidth usage and a better browsing experience is a nice bonus.
As for the content producers if they can't raise funds through other means then too bad, there is no such thing as irreplaceable content, someone else will sooner or later come along and fill the gap, some of the best content I've found comes from people who make zero or practically zero money from it.

Oh boy! guess I can't have multiple levels of protection!

Some anti-virus programs are just prone to false positives.
Oh boy! guess I can't have multiple levels of protection!
That's quite a freakout over a simple question.
And bye bye to Yahoo's userbase.
Hell it isn't even a big deal.. If every other major provider follows their example, some small company will come and make a free service and that'll be that.
I've been dying to get my mother off of Yahoo for the longest time. Her account is, like, 8 years old, and gets endless spam. But she still gets all her main stuff there.
I also gave her adblock, so hopefully she sees this, and hopefully she jumps ship because of it.
Oh boy! guess I can't have multiple levels of protection!
wearing three condoms just means three times the protection
Its a limited trial, not all users are getting this.
IMO fuck webmail, just connect with a mail client of your choice via IMAP.
Using a mail client seems to completely counteract this even being an issue since they can't serve you ads there and, as far as I know, can't really block you from doing it so this is kinda pointless. They should instead focus on unobtrusive and safe ads. Services like Project Wonderful are far better than something like Google's ads from what I've seen since the most PW ads are is an animated gif and their script to track loads/clicks and nothing else.
There was an instance here maybe a year or so ago where one of the largest newspapers website (shit paper with assloads of ads) were spreading malware through the ad network they used. Not exactly a shady filesharing site
The one piece of malware I've gotten in several years of browsing the internet was actually from a normally trustworthy site (I think it might have been Wikia but I forget, ti was like 2-3 years ago) which was using Google ads.
People need to be more creative than to use ads on their site. It's a failed experiment - no one's biting anymore. There needs to be material that isn't there just to grab clicks, and their needs to be support that isn't tied to a banner image that scrolls out to the rest of the page to cover up life, the universe, and everything. It's being done.

spam is even less effective than ads, and yet people try really, REALLY hard
but its pretty much the same thing, ads have tried to become intrusive as HELL so that they can get more clicks... but that only caused their own demise.
Is this in effect? I'm currently using adblock and checking my Yahoo mail with no problems.

And how do you suggest we do this while keeping it free for everyone?
Well, this affects a grand total of 0 people. So what's the deal?
This is why Adblock Plus is shit.
This doesn't happen with uBlock, get with the times.

Like I said, it doesn't seem to be happening with adblock either because I'm using it with no issues.
I'm having no issues with adblock plus and yahoo mail.
Me neither. I've checked it about three or four times in the past three days.
And how do you suggest we do this while keeping it free for everyone?
It depends on the content of the page, but I believe in premium features, clever ads (Google's Star Wars campaign), or community-focused Patreons (for things like YouTube channels). The traditional method can also work too if it's not grating, like Pandora. The ads are terrible because they try to be so ear-catching and it just comes off annoying - ads on Pandora would be fine if they weren't explosive.
Too bad advertisers messed things up for companies like Yahoo, because people are far too turned off with traditional web advertisements. It's not coming back. I only explicitly disable my AdBlocker on websites that ask for it to be turned off without restricting my usage, and then offering ads that aren't so bad.
People use ad blockers for good reasons. People doesn't use it just because "ads are annoying", but because ads these days are cluttering up websites a ridiculously high amount, and let's not forget all of the malware a bunch of ads contain these days.
That's the thing, I started using adblock because of the resource usage. Some websites would even freeze up my PC, which I found ridicoulus.

Wikia is the greatest offender in this respect.

Huh?
Well, I'm glad I stopped using Yahoo when GMail became a thing.
Same Here I haven't checked my Yahoo since 2011
Who actually uses ymail anyway, it's shit. It can't perform half the functions gmail can; for example, if you select the first 50 messages in your inbox in gmail, it asks if you'd like to select all messages instead of just that first 50. Ymail forces you to scroll, over and over and over and over until all messages are visible before you can delete them.
Yahoo mail sucks. If you're still using it this is the perfect incentive to leave them.

Because it was the first email service for a lot of people and changing email is pretty tough if everybody already knows you by that address.

I'll stop using ad blockers when they stop making ads that are so intrusive/potentially mal-ware infested/obstructive/SO GOD-DAMNED NOISY SERIOUSLY WHO THE FUCK DECIDED ADS WITH SOUND THAT AUTO-PLAY AT FULL FUCKING VOLUME SHOULD BE A FUCKING THING?!
