People like Brianna Wu pretend there is a general hatred for transgender characters, but in reality the backlash stems from them trying to hijack and re-purpose already existing, popular characters.
I see it happen a lot on tumblr. Some people really enjoy taking popular characters to turn them into minorities. They have a real obsession with it. I don't think anyone minds fanon like that, but when someone with a big audience starts claiming it's canon in public, that's when the shit hits the fan.
I think their logic is "if a character everybody likes turns out trans everybody will suddenly be tolerant"
Which in itself is ridiculous
Everyone seems to be forgetting that in the idea world, a perfect copy of each fucked up variation of Samus Aran exists to everyone's liking. Where originality doesn't matter at all.
By posting this you showed that you gave enough of a fuck about that post to reply to it
yea good job a+ it's still not caring about Brianna Wu lmao
This is the first time I've been reading about this, and I'm super confused. Isn't the Japanese translation to "newhalf" talking about the fact that Samus is part Chozo as well, after being fused with the DNA of the Chozo's as a child. I can't actually find the translated interview excerpt which this article is referring to give it some context.

It seems pretty clear to me that that's not their intention. All of their discussion about this seems to focus more on representation of trans people for the sake of trans people, not for winning the hearts and minds of normal people.
The real question is if she has a cloaca or not since she's half spacebird.
She has a real vagina I have seen it
Of course she is trans, I mean she even transforms into a morphball.
Or if she morphs into a morphball, does that mean the correct term for her is morph person?
why does anybody care
To be fair its only the trans tumblr community that cares because its tumblr. It's the kind people who make up head canons for mute protagonists that they're trans because they want to inject themselves in the character for validation.
Basically I'm saying they're dumb.
So the other author of the article, Ellen McGrody, seems equally or even more unstable than Wu:

As someone who plans on being a content creator people like this are frightening.
the best way to deal with these feral people is to not post anything from them at all, just don't, really just don't
As someone who plans on being a content creator people like this are frightening.
as long as you don't act like them you'll be ok
It really is a problem, if you want to make a trans character in your game you have to choices, making your character cis, get the same ammount of sales or risk it with a trans character, not just because of non pro trans people's potential backlash, that's not really an issue, the issue comes when people that support transgender people give you backlash because you made a small mistake.

Isn't this called misgendering? And isn't that a super rude thing to do? Yeah i know they're video game characters and don't have feelings but that's still pretty awful.

Yes, Poison was never confirmed and intentionally so as to let the players come to their own conclusion. The irony being that they are making the same sort of normally taboo assumptions about Poison that is generally found to be offensive. Aka assigning gender without all the facts.
The only character that she is definitely, no shadow of a doubt, right about is Vivian - in the Japanese version only. Everything else is objectively wrong.

It's only hurtful towards trans* people and (possibly) various, ehh, demi-whatever?.. whoever they are. Misgendering cissies is fine.

poison is confirmed to be trans everywhere but the US, where she's cis.
[editline]hi[/editline]
or she has had a confirmed sex change in the US i cant remember which one
Isn't poison trans just because the the developers thought it would be less controversial if the players beat up a 'man' instead of a woman.
yep. along with roxy from final fight. however later because that was obviously even more offensive, roxy and poison were replaced with bill and sid in the NA version
also found the quote about poison
Street Fighter IV's producer Yoshinori Ono, when asked in an interview about the matter, stated "Let's set the record straight: in North America, Poison is officially a post-op transsexual. But in Japan, she simply tucks her business away to look female."
People care a lot about samus, myself included. People caused an absolute shitstorm when the newest metroid game portrayed her as some dumb, emotionally bipolar moron who couldn't stand for herself and broke down when seeing an enemy she'd already murdered 7 times beforehand. They turned the character into a pile of shit. Of course people are going to complain if her gender is now something it isn't at all, it doesn't make sense lorewise, logically and appears only to exist to appeal to champagne SJWs
why does anybody care
lots of stupid fucking reasons.
How did Samus Aran being trans start as a thing anyway? Doesn't it make jack shit difference in the end anyway? As a character she's meant to be a battle hardened bounty hunter.

From what I heard, it's because she's doing something that you normally see men do (bounty hunting), so, if that's the case, then this is also sexist.
Unless a person's gender directly links into the story, it's irrelevant to know exact details.

the thing is, if someone does try to make a game with relatable trans characters, they are going to get backlash from the GG crowd no matter what because they're 'pandering to sjws'.

I find that GG'ers tend to frequent anonymous messageboards and those people tend to like Japanese games. Japanese games are quite open minded when it comes to gender.
Of course some GG'ers are gonna be like that but when you say "some people" when referring to large groups of people you'll probably be right most of the time no matter what you're saying.

Something about words that got lost in translation about her being half chozo, being translated into newhalf, which is something the Japanese call futa apparently.
Take this with a grain of salt though, this is what I remember from metroid threads, where people were deliberately trying to piss each other off.
