ITT Texas-haters. It's not our fault we have conservative pieces of shit. And FFS stop calling us stupid. :frown:
That was Catholocism and the Holy Roman Empire.
They were taught the same morals and the same commandants, sir
Also, I hope this doesn't take effect until after I graduate. (2011)
I hate religious threads on FP. It either boils down to religists calling atheists pieces of shit, or vice-versa. There's no intelligent debating.
Automerge broke [editline]09:11PM[/editline] Again
They were taught the same morals and the same commandants, sir
The Catholic Church definately twisted Christianity. They burned and killed Christians for speaking against the church, so it's pretty obvious Catholics weren't following the same beliefs.
That was Catholocism and the Holy Roman Empire. [editline]10:08PM[/editline] You know, people DO have opinions. You can't just alienate the religious students in Texas because you "think religion is dumb". Don't state that religion is the only belief, but don't say atheism is the only belief either. Have care for both opinions.
not teaching religion != teaching atheism not teaching religion = letting students make up their own minds
i live in texas and im smert
I hate religious threads on FP. It either boils down to religists calling atheists pieces of shit, or vice-versa. There's no intelligent debating.
what the fuck is a religist
i want you to prove to me that the christians and catholics were reading the different bible at that time.
Catholic church had it translated over to Latin and, as admitted by some members, made numerous changes. They refused to allow commoners to read the Bible, and anyone besides a priest caught with it was executed for heresy. The Catholics preached that God had designated them to be the holy controllers of Earth. [editline]10:15PM[/editline]
not teaching religion != teaching atheism not teaching religion = letting students make up their own minds
Don't teach religion, but don't teach atheism. Don't state in science class why this and this proves atheism/religion, leave it out of the equation. It's the most unbiased way to let people make up their minds. One group chooses atheism, one group chooses religion, everyone's happy. [editline]10:15PM[/editline]
what the fuck is a religist
Religious individual.
are you telling me that you want to let creationism be taught? religist still isn't a word can i call you a retardist?
He never said that.
Is he saying that we should just not teach science?
Teach evolution, because it is right, but don't say "Evolution was enacted by God" and don't say "Evolution happened on its own because there is no God".
Teach evolution, because it is right, but don't say "Evolution was enacted by God" and don't say "Evolution happened on its own because there is no God".
Uh, it's kind of hard to teach evolution and not say it happened on it's own. That's kind of how theories work. They happen on their own.
Damnit, can we trade Texas for the Panama Canal back? I bet the Panameese would like it there better.
Fuck Newton.
I hate religious threads on FP. It either boils down to religists calling atheists pieces of shit, or vice-versa. There's no intelligent debating.
No, but religious morality isn't a good thing. Stone your kids? Kill women who have sex outside of marriage? You can't pick and choose what you like out of the bible, it's all or nothing.
They've done the final votes on the middle school and elementary school textbook standards. Both passed with out an issue. So we might be seeing some idiotic things in the next printing of textbooks. At this point it's really up to teachers to create good lesson plans free from this political tug of war. I do remember when I was in high school (in Texas), the history teachers created lesson plans that never used the textbooks issued by the state. Only exception to this was the AP textbook, obviously. But at any rate I can see why they avoided Texas SBOE textbooks if there was this much lunacy in them.
Oh, I wanted to add to any Texan who will be in high school when the new textbooks come out that I am willing to pay for one.

". . . .we are a Christian nation founded on Christian principles. The way I evaluate history textbooks is first I see how they cover Christianity and Israel. Then I see how they treat Ronald Reagan—he needs to get credit for saving the world from communism and for the good economy over the last twenty years because he lowered taxes." Don McLeroy, Texas SBOE
If this goes through I'm going to be a bitch in History next year. (:
Fuck Texas and fuck American exceptionalism.
I disagree. To deny the role of america in shaping the role of the world in the past two centuries is to deny history itself. No we aren't the saviors of the world, but without us world politics would probably be resembling the 1600's still. We did a lot to the world, and while we aren't an exception to the rest of the world, we've been a major influence to the world for centuries. I love my country, I just hate seeing what we're doing/done to it.

The roots of the belief are attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville,[2][3] who claimed that the then-50-year-old United States held a special place among nations, because it was the first modern democracy.
You can teach about America's massive role in the history of the past 200 years without teaching American exceptionalism.
