The PSP is still pretty sought after, just because you can do so much with it.

That doesn't mean the samething will happen to the Wii U.
Pirates are bad and all, but honestly I haven't found a console that rivals the original PSP when it comes to pure game library and capability, though.
Even though the PSP was hacked rather early in its life cycle, it still appealed to many developers, actively fought against firmware hacks in its lifecycle and came out with some pretty cool games... while being able to emulate anything up to the PS1 flawlessly with hardware controls.
I later bought a 3DS, but then immediately sold it after a week disappointed because it had nowhere even near 10% of any of the games you could play on a PSP.
Honestly, after seeing what the PSP and PS3 were capable with running otherOS / homebrew, I can't ever justify buying a console that can't run homebrew because they feel horribly locked down.
Why would you have seperate media center / portable utility and console devices when the hardware inside are the same thing? Consoles are perfectly capable of being more than consoles.
When was this, and how can you soundly compare the library of a console that's been out for three years to that of one that's been out for nine?
TBH the first thing that I thought when I heard about the Wii U being hacked was that it may be worth buying now
But it's just me
This isn't good news for Nintendo, since they most likely make back the losses of the hardware with software sales.
I am kinda surprised somebody bothered to hack it
if there is homebrew I will buy a wii u
also this could mean potential smash mods like project m for the wii u smash.
That doesn't mean the samething will happen to the Wii U.
Homebrew is one of the reasons I got a Wii. Knowing that the Wii-U may have a good hacking/homebrew scene down the road certainly makes me want to get one more now.
Although it will be a problem for game sales, it's gonna boost console sales tremendously.
Typically things like that are still terrible for first party though. Consoles are usually sold at loss, and the games, licensing, and services make up for the loss. I'm not sure how much of a loss if any Nintendo sell the wii u at but I'm fairly sure more console sales and less game sales is the last thing they want
I hope it doesn't pull a PSP and die because devs are spooked about pirates.
This. Also valid for the original NDS.
Like over here you can buy R4 cards in any bookstall.
FailOverflow already dumped the BootROM like within 2 months of the release, why is this news?
wii u piracy would pretty much be kicking them while they're down, especially if it got to the levels the original wii did
... you do realise we don't care about piracy, but homebrew.
Let's be clear, with this there are really small chances of a disc loader.

has there ever been a console that was impervious to piracy?

No, i mean it will happend one way or the other.
Still marcan said this:

It serves precisely three purposes:
1. It paves the way for a different exploit which, while ALSO not breaking anything not broken, and ALSO being useless for homebrew/piracy, makes it slightly easier to analyze the rest of the system once you do break it using yet another completely unrelated exploit.
2. It’s cute and cool. We’re hackers, we like breaking things even if it’s useless. We also like laughing at Nintendo because they clearly didn’t intend for this to happen, even though it’s rendered moot by other flaws in the system.
3. Unfortunately, it also gives harryoke an excuse to post more utter nonsense and a completely fake gamepad photo that has nothing to do with any of this.
In other words, it allows MarioNumber1 to say he dumped the boot rom (good job!), and if he implements the HRESET exploit, and if he implements an undisclosed, completely unrelated, much more complex Wii U mode exploit, then he will have a slightly easier/more convenient time reverse engineering the rest of the system. It’s not even a make-or-break thing, just a slight convenience.
Really, we did it because number 2.
And yes, Nintendo can’t fix this on existing consoles, but even if they fix it on newer ones it’s completely fucking irrelevant because only a single person in the world has to use this exploit once, ever, and after that it’s completely and utterly useless for every purpose, period. The only purpose of this exploit is to learn more about how the console works.

Wii U was never really for nine year olds, even though that's sort of the reputation Nintendo has with its 'family friendly' vibe which has always been their... Uh? Goal? No, that's cutting it a bit short, more like their intention since the early NES days, but I don't know how long they can run that over their heads.

this. some kids repeated what f0 already did AND WROTE A FUCKING PRESENTATION ON.

this is not a step closer. there is a ton that would have to be done. the wii-u is still secure.

You're over thinking it, it's literally just a dumb 4chan insult like Sonygger, Leaguebabbie, Valvedrone, Xbot etc etc.
