Giant holes in the world happens for me on single player games absolutely every single time I go and explore for a bit. The game just can't handle generating a single new area.
Do you people realize that he made this money because of people buying minecraft? Who are you to say he dosent deserve it. Clearly people think minecraft is a good game, they keep buying it after all.
Yes, there have been times where updates were scarce and lacking content, that's correct, but considering only one or two people worked on the game simultaneously for a long time, it's not that bad.
Since you like comparing things so much, Overgrowth is being developed by one dude, and he makes updates EVERY WEEK. And unlike Minecraft, these are big updates for the most part that actually include reworking huge parts of the game, adding entire new elements, coding an AI from the ground up, adding new combat mechanics, all of which without ever breaking previously added content. Not to mention the guys are still working on the engine and very important game features after 4 years of development. The game is still labelled an Alpha, while Notch tried making minecraft a beta then call it 1.0 as fast as he could to make it more expensive, while the game still lacks huge amounts of content.

If it has to wait for a 10-year-old harddrive to write everything to the disk, small wonders one may experience trouble. I, personally speaking, think the main reason for this "terrain generation trouble" is because people almost always cheap out on harddrives because it's not important for gaming anyway, except for Minecraft, and that's why so many people complain that it runs like crap when they can otherwise run decently looking games at a decent pace.
0.01%
Oh right Sorry
http://blog.wolfire.com/ Doesn't appear to be those big updates you're talking about from the first few posts, but oh well, I could be wrong. Technically speaking, a game where every single piece can interact with each other is much harder to keep stable. I agree, some things have been broken in Minecraft where fuck knew how it broke, and that's because it wasn't rewritten to a more stable format than the "cave game test" before there was too much shit in the game.
this thread is comedy gold right here. and base by your hate, making millions of a videogame, why not bash gaben for billions of dollars by making videogames and servies?
Because a good portion of Facepunch rides Gaben's dick harder than a free roller-coaster. Also, people getting successful off of things I don't enjoy is bad!!!1!
Minecraft has a huge modding community yes, but they don't support it very well at all considering Notch first tried to charge for the Mod API nearly 2 years ago now, and we're still waiting for Dinnerbone the guy who was hired to work on a Mod API to release something, the last work done to it was 6 months ago: https://github.com/Mojang/Minecraft-API
That is almost correct. They've stated multiple times that they're working on rewriting the engine in the background. That's what they said from the beginning anyway. They need to rewrite the engine to properly implement an API. Dinnerbone stated on reddit, on why Optifine isn't included in the vanilla game:
They can keep on asking, but it's optifine who didn't want to be in vanilla, not mojang who didn't want to add it :) We're working on something far, far better regardless.
They're doing something, but they aren't telling us what yet.
I wish I had the same idea as him (before him). ... And the competence as well.
Someone did have the idea before him, it was called Infiniminer and they didn't take advantage of the hype (there were a lot of people who were playing infiniminer, it's from the same guy that made spacechem).
They're doing something, but they aren't telling us what yet.
I can already reduce lag a shit load, stop using a tesselator and take advantage of vertex buffer objects. It wouldn't take very long to implament at all, there is no excuse to why they haven't done this yet, it's pretty much common design there is a reason Minetest runs so much better and it's not just C++.
If you guys spent half as much time programming as you do sperging the fuck out over Notch's success you'd probably be done creating a much better looking, optimized and popular indie game by now :)
Most of the people in here bitching about the game who actually bought it have probably put a good 100 hours into it You'd be hard pressed to find anything with that kind of lasting appeal for twice the cost

I actually never ended up buying Minecraft :/
Or how fast it takes for you to get bored at a game with literally no fucking goal. A game that is too linear is not a good game, okay, but a game that is not linear enough is not bound to be a good game by comparison either. Don't get me wrong, I have fun with minecraft in creative mode when I don't have anything better to do and I make little contraptions out of pistons and redstone, but does it mean it's worth 20 dollars ? Fuck no. I did not even buy the game, my brother did and I'm pretty much using his account to play, because I don't want to waste that money on a game that is not finished. Because you can find worse games at a higher price doesn't make this one automatically good. And having regular updates to fix broken fix or add new stuff IN A BETA is not an argument fo rsale.
Minecraft has been and is fantastic, I've easily clocked >2000 hours in the game. Each to their own  [editline]2nd February 2013[/editline] Also, good for notch. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't incredibly jealous, making $101m off of a small game like minecraft is an impressive feat.
I'm getting worse framerate.
60fps is vsync.
60fps is vsync.
It is commonly spiking below 30.
They need to rewrite the engine to properly implement an API.
I dunno, the modding community seems to have done a pretty good job with Forge. I don't have a problem with any part of Notch, Mojang or Minecraft in general, except the API thing.
I dunno, the modding community seems to have done a pretty good job with Forge. The point of the API is that doesn't need to happen.
And with every update, the mod community needs to update and recompile their mods to be compatible with the latest version. The point of the API is that doesn't need to happen.
Well not really, that's the point of Forge. Forge does most of the 'conversions', mod makers just need to change one or two things. I know it's not an API but it's a hell of a lot further than Mojang got with it.
good thing i contributed $0 to him. lalalalala
wow. i'm not even going to start. i hardly stand games. i'll sit there for like an hour trying to get into a game. and drop it. i'm just saying broooooo, time = money. an average person can't get a million dollars in like 10 years. i'm not talking about the guy and what he does with his life. i'm just saying it's gluttonous. the fuck is he going to do with it to help anybody but himself? excluding the company. i'll just say one more thing. if you think this is appropriate, you probably spend way too much time invested in kid shit. or you have bad back acne.
I can feel your jealousy even hurt my butt also
1,5 billion SEK and it's still an incredibly broken game
People willingly gave him money for his work. It would be wrong if he scammed the buyers or something, but most of them enjoy Minecraft a lot. Plus, he gives away a lot of the money to charity
Despite all the bullshit and drama that happened at the beginning specially when notch was pretty much running the show minecraft is a fun game and has a lot of potential. Some of the stuff the community came up with and made shows that the game has more potential.
HEY GUYS LOOK AT ME DONATING MONEY
yeah wow what an arrogant prick why doesn't he put his money where his mouth i- oh [editline]2nd February 2013[/editline]
Because he's lazy. He pretty much worked on Minecraft for a while when money was still a motivation for him then he just stopped working on it and released updates at a scandalously low rate until he realized it was a bad idea and gave the whole thing away to a much more sensible developer.
yeah man fuck successful people they're not human beings that deserve to relax and enjoy the wealth they've created for themselves, they should constantly cater to my every whim and spend every ounce of their soul making my entitled ass feel a bit better
I liked minecraft, but when it was "released" it was a massive slap to the face. A fuck ton of features were missing, and all it was was a money grab while minecraft is at it's peak. Thankfully i didnt pay for mine and got it as a gift, like the survival and food is fucking retarded now because your guy has the fastest digestive system in the world. Like hunger was a good addition, but your guy has to eat like 5-6 times a day or he will starve. lets not even talk about the joke of a final boss the dragon is :v:. I just felt Notch got his money, and got bored of it. So he dumped it on one of his employees and went to make other cash grab games as "the minecraft guy". Atm Cubeworld or whatever looks much better adventure and combat wise.
Good for Notch. I would buy a car too with that kinda money.
Bitch pls... PSY earn almost 3.5 trillion of gangnam style
