Yeah, bugs aren't intentional, and it did get his hopes up only to be met with some pocket change and a big mac... but you still aren't looking at this from their perspective.
Your casino is doing grand, people in, people out, money money money.
SUddenly, a man explodes in joy saying he won the jackpot of $55 million.
Thats funny, that shouldn't have been possible. Jackpots aren't supposed to be higher than $2.5 million.
He runs around happily, and then your boss gets to tell him that his win isn't legit, there was an error that has never been seen before in their systems and its actually a false jackpot. They'd be more than happy to pay for a nice dinner and $90 (which seems like it'd be the money he spent that night, possibly gas, or the fare at the hotel he might have stayed at), but they're sorry that this has happened and they'll try to not let it happen again. And then the dude flips his shit and refuses the dinner and $90, and may have been a total ass about it, we don't know because the article doesn't say because its aimed to make the casino look like a bunch of dickbutts. He could have been a total ass about it, and the casino threw him out cause... he was a total ass about it.
Just because their machines malfunctioned does not mean they shouldn't pay out. Should've programmed their machines better.
That's their problem, not this guys'
That's not how it works. What if your bank told you that you got 50mil from someone but it was a system glitch, do you really expect them to pay you?
He should go for the $2.5 million..
His lawyers argue Merlaku is entitled to the money as it showed on the machines. He even used his mobile phone to film the footage of the winning noise and screen.
The lawyers for the casino have blamed the machine manufacturers and also cited an Austrian law that says jackpots cannot normally be higher than $2.5 million.
That's not how it works, a bank doesn't tell you "someone send you 50 mil but you're not getting it because it was a glitch".

I think most people would be 'an ass about' being told they won bare money then being told 'oh lol you can't have bare money, but you can have this dumb valueless crap we're offering you instead because we realise we might be losing out big time and want to cover it up'.
That's not how it works, a bank doesn't tell you "someone send you 50 mil but you're not getting it because it was a glitch".
Umm, never heard of auto alerts when you receive money?
That casino owner is a fucking shit. He could of at least offered him what jackpots can 'normally be'.
But honestly $90 and a meal? That's like walking up to a homeless person, offering them a steak dinner, and then tossing them a couple of pennies and a hostess Twinkie.
Its their fault that the machine had an malfunction. PAY HIM THE MONEY!
Its their fault that the machine had an malfunction. PAY HIM THE MONEY!
Not going to happen. A malfunction does not entitle you to anything.
Umm, never heard of auto alerts when you receive money?
Okay, that still doesn't mean you get 50 mil. Its still an error, it still wasn't supposed to happen.
Not going to happen. A malfunction does not entitle you to anything.
I am sure there are diffent rules in casinos, but by law mis pricing is not defendable. If the price tag on a ferarri says 1 euro it will be sold for 1 unless there's a contract bound to the purhase that forces you to pay additional fees.
Although i am sure lawyers can find loopholes..
I guess it depends how the contract law stands in the country, and more specifically, the contract law regarding the casino he was playing in.
If it was in the UK he could probably carry it through the courts and receive some compensation for unilateral mistake on behalf of the casino, as they basically just said 'its a bug lol' and offered him shitty compensation, then kicked him out, without even finding out the exact problem that was experienced or why it happened.
It seemed pretty negligent of them to not ensure that bugs like this couldn't happen. Perhaps display 'ERROR' if the amount that is going to be won is OVER $2.5million. That'd be sensible and really simple to do. (Hell you could limit your liability to $9,999,999 by not putting fucking 8 digits on the display in the first place).

A bank isn't a casino.
A $50 million bank error is one thing. A reasonable person would probably see that and think "what the fuck, that can't be right. I need to contact my bank and see what's going on."
When a machine designed to give you money if you win says quite explicitly and with much fanfare that you won and will be receiving money, that's kinda different, and a reasonable person in that case would expect to be paid.
It would be understandable if they defined the glitch as his jackpot being too high and gave him the proper payout of 2.5 million, instead they decided to take this to mean that he didn't win at all.
Oh well. It's their reputation at stake. People are gonna see them now as "that place that'll happily take your money, but if you actually win they'll screw you over and kick you out"
A bank isn't a casino.
So it's ok for bank to not pay because of a glitch but casino has to pay for a glitch? Makes no sense to me.
a casino not wanting to pay a man €43 000 000?
Sounds like something that would make the casino owner broke.
In fairness, if he didn't actually win then he shouldn't really be getting the money. Think what you want about casinos, but they have to make a profit somehow.
The fact that they banned him is bs though, it was their mistake not his.

If he was an ass about it then they have every right to ban him.
Just throwing my two cents out there - if you're the owner of the machine, you're responsible for it's upkeep. If your machine hasn't been serviced or had defective parts replaced on it in a while, it tends to encounter glitches and malfunctions. If one of these glitches tells somebody with loud fanfare and with text on the screen saying they won the jackpot and are entitled to a lot of money, is it then the manufacturer's fault for not doing your work? And if these glitches and malfunctions are caused by old hardware you've not replaced or serviced, is it a good idea to blame the creator of the machines who are busy putting out new hardware, that works perfectly at its time?
In my opinion; you and only you are responsible for your machine's actions and you cannot put the blame on the manufacturer or anybody else for maintenance you failed to perform.

You raise a valid point, but your point assumes the error was caused by lack of maintenance and we do not know this to be the case.

Chances are this wasn't a mistake, the casino is just trying to find a way around paying him, even though he put his money into trying to win. Never trust a casino, they're a load of liars who'll pull every excuse in the book not to pay you.

Yeah, if the machine was to blow up and kill him, it would be the Casino's fault.

Yeah, and chances are it was a mistake, and everyone is painting them as badguys just because they're a casino.

Of course because the machines the manufacturers put out are absolutely flawless and have no imperfections or bugs. Its the casino's that make the bugs.
I'm sorry not to be a dick but what are you doing man. You're arguing in favour of a casino in Austria, for an event that has no significance to you whatsoever.
Go play a game or something man this is stupid.

Doesn't that just make it worse for the casino? :v:
What I find interesting is that they say they know only 4/5 of the numbers or whatever was met. If this is the case then you would expect this to occur far more often and the error as these machines tend to be programmed so you'll almost get the numbers (usually 3/4 out of the five).
If it's a genuine glitch then I would still give the guy something. He's found a huge bug that could exist in other machines and cause massive losses to the casinos. $90 and a meal doesn't really cut it. :v:

If it's a machine that gives you it by random chance, how the hell can they know it malfunctioned and didn't just give it to him? I mean this wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't for the fact that the guy put his god damn money towards that prize and then they just take it away.
At first I thought the "offered $90" meant 90 million.

Except its not random. If it were random, then it would happen more often. Its an incredibly precise and incredibly complicated program that monitors a large range of variables down to the rate at which they put in their coins.

I think it would actually help them prove it wasn't supposed to happen.

yep lets just give him useless shit instead
Hell if I won 55 mil I'd be happy enough with 1 mil, but I'd greatly expect 2.5 mil...
Also, casino's are known for screwing people over, if you're winning too much they can take the money and kick you out for being too lucky.
The amount of times people have won jackpots and then it being blamed on software malfunction
