• Co-operation or A kick to the Groin? Marvel Mutant Quicksilver Pulls Double Duty in ‘X-Men’ and ‘Ave
The complicated (and extremely unfortunate) issue of which movie studios own the screen rights to what Marvel properties may be coming to a head with news that the character of Quicksilver is currently running (really fast, of course) back and forth between Fox and Disney. Quicksilver's upcoming big-screen incarnation was first referenced at last month's Hollywood premiere of "Iron Man 3," where "Marvel's The Avengers" director Joss Whedon mentioned that he had written a "brother-sister act" into the script for the "Avengers" sequel ... which immediately had fans speculating that he meant the popular mutant sibling duo of Quicksilver, who is able to move and think at super-sonic speeds, and Scarlet Witch, who's able to manipulate probability and reality via her "hexes." A week later, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige seemed to respond in the affirmative to questions regarding the characters being written into "The Avengers 2," though he emphasized that nothing's set in stone until the final draft of the script has been locked. Well, that draft may indeed have to change a lot sooner than six months from now, as today director Bryan Singer announced via Twitter that Quicksilver will actually be appearing in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and be played by "American Horror Story" star Evan Peters: Okay, so who's really "allowed" to feature Quicksilver in a movie, Fox ("X-Men") or Disney/Marvel ("The Avengers")? Or can he be in both? Singer points out that his version of Quicksilver is pre-"Avengers," and referring to him as a "kid" means he's possibly considerably younger than the experienced warrior that Whedon is probably imagining. Are those big enough differences to allow the studios to play nice with Pietro Maximoff? And, geez, might this potential crossing of the streams prompt a much bigger discussion between the two studios regarding how they may be able to work together in the future? We highly doubt it, but we can certainly hope ... and hold on to those dreams of one day seeing Magneto (Ian McKellen) – who happens to be the father of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch – wrecking metal-warping havoc on, say, the Avengers' Helicarrier. This is actually the second Fox vs. Marvel character issue to come up in the past month. A couple of weeks ago, Disney Animation surprised everyone with plans for their first Marvel feature, an adaptation of "Big Hero 6," which will hit theaters in November 2014. One of the members of that super-team is Silver Samurai, a character who will be featured this summer in Fox's "The Wolverine." Might that character be crossing the studio streams as well? As far as Quicksilver, if it ends up just being an issue of who gets there first, then Fox has the advantage with a July 2014 release date for "X-Men: Days of Future Past" vs. Disney/Marvel's May 2015 bow for "The Avengers 2."
Source. I really hope this isn't Fox trying to screw over Disney in the movie rights front.
Course it is. They want that big billion dollar every movie money.
Fox already has Xmen, with all the well known characters included, I hardly think that using those two characters is going to screw anyone over. The average movie audience won't even know who they are till the movies come out. I think it's possible that each studio may try to poison the well, that is stake a claim to as many characters as they can, hoping that scares off other studios from using them. For instance, Fox might be hoping that if they can get a movie with these two out first, it will discourage Marvel from using them with the Avengers, even if Marvel is legally entitled to use them. I doubt Marvel will be intimidated though, not with all that money flowing in. Plus, even if Fox uses them first it won't matter unless Fox can create really memorable movie characters out of them. I saw First Class and liked it, but I really only remember the big name characters in that movie, I can't remember the names of the secondary characters in the movie. In other words Fox does a lousy job with the secondary Xmen characters it uses. I think it's going to backfire on Fox. They won't do much with the characters, but Joss Whedon will have them do something cool. Then the only versions movie audiences will care about are the Avenger versions.
Ugh I hate fox. They need to sell all there rights to paramount/marvel.
