N. Korean general says Pyongyang has nuke-tipped ICBMs on standby

People seem to forget that the whole "Hurrr, we'll wipe 'em out" is usually reserved to internet forums. I'm willing to bet no one higher up is taking this lightly and is preparing something. Hell, China is apparently already asking for calm.
I'm more woried about the armchair generals and their odd war-boner theories in these threads than I am about North Korea to be honest.

Fact of the matter is that regardless of war boners, Korea is a serious threat to South Korea and to an extent, Japan, and at best a war with Korea would see very serious causalities and a heavy strain on China or South Korea. I doubt that the Koreans would make serious gains in a ground war, but I'd be more worried about if they didn't, and the long campaign in snuffing out any Korean guerrilla resistance.
And while they likely don't have a nuke, it's not unreasonable to assume they could, and that it could end up in Seoul or on top of American/Korean forces. This isn't something to take lightly. We're probably the most tense with Korea now since the sinking of the Cheonan.
Even though the threats are probably empty, I hope our army is taking it seriously.
AFAIK US Patriot is capable of shooting down ICBMs, and we're pretty darn proficient at taking down scuds. Again i personally can't confirm if Patriot can do it, i'm only assuming.
I speak with the fact it's my job to monitor this.
s into a "sea of fire".
The sea is pretty much the only thing they can reliably hit at this point.
I'll ask my Sgts today if it's possible...

Whose to say that they would deliver a nuke via missile, though? With all those tunnels, and the underground tests, mayhaps they'd rather blow it under a city, or simply just smuggle it in?
Going to war with NK is actually pretty scary when you think about it.
Sure, let's launch nukes at a population of 24.5 million people everything will be hunky dorey yep.
OR
We attack a military that's around 9 million strong.
[del]That'd be cool.[/del]
No it wouldn't.
I didn't say anything about nukes, pal.
[editline]8th March 2013[/editline]
Nor did I say anything about launching a full-scale invasion.

Definition of putting words in my mouth.
Does anyone else feel like they would support a war with NK?
They're a shit stain on the Earth, an entire country that is militarized and brainwashed and cannabalising its own civillians. They emphasize everything wrong with humanity. They're killing and starving their own people, I feel like whatever losses are suffered in order to save that country would be worth it.
All this assuming their allies wouldn't defend them, in which case that's gonna be WW3 and I don't support that...

mayhaps lol
it's what my MOS prepares for, it's not my job to speculate other means, we have problems with cruise missiles as is...

... Exactly who IS allied with NK anyway? At least TRULY allied? I'd understand being an ally for the sake of immunity against them in case of war (a bit like my bully comparison in the other thread except you join the bully just so he doesn't punch you), but actually defending their actions? Haven't heard anyone doing that.
Talking with some buddies in the service, apparently the US has gone to Defcon 4. Not quite sure what that means.
Talking with some buddies in the service, apparently the US has gone to Defcon 4. Not quite sure what that means.
I'd like to see official declaration of that, because if it is:
Have you not worried before, it's time to worry now.
DEFCON 5 is regular readiness, DEFCON 4 means higher readiness than usual.
DEFCON 3 means units are ready to mobilize, DEFCON 2 is preparation for imminent nuclear strikes (the Cold War was the only time it reched this stage) and DEFCON 1 is nuclear war.

Where are you buddies stationed?
Can someone explain to me where this all started?
One day I woke up and suddenly NK was playing around with 'nukes'. Now they want to blow up the world. Where did all of this start?
Where DIDN'T it start?
Misawa AFB. Yeah, they don't sound that worried.
Talking with some buddies in the service, apparently the US has gone to Defcon 4. Not quite sure what that means.
Defcon 4 means nothing, really. It's about like the rainbow terror alert system going from Green to Yellow. Just means increased security measures is all. Even DEFCON 1 doesn't mean anything will happen
I much prefer the get a helmet, put the helmet on.
We're currently at: speculate about getting a helmet

Um... Quite a while before you "woke up". Quite a while before you were born.

You're wrong here. DEFCON 1 means that nuclear war is imminent.
I'm fairly sure US has capabilities to shoot down an incoming nuclear missile.
I used to be worried that they were putting on the failed launches with single warheads to lull us into a false sense of security. Them releasing a statement on the condition of their nuclear delivery system, which is clearly bullshit, seems to have put my mind at rest. GJ NK

All they need to do is puff it back at North Korea.

Think of the Defcon levels as odds. Just because we might be at DEFCON 1, doesn't mean Nuclear weapons are flying, or are going to fly. They're just postures
DEFCON 1 has never been used in history. It would only be used if there was a nuclear missile flying. That's why it was never used before since DEFCON was created.
I thought armies didnt usually show off their best bets in case of war so the enemy wouldnt be prepared...

1950, when the Korean War started. Hostilities never really ceased. Modern day, Korea has been testing nukes since 2006, and a second and third test in 2009 and just last month. This isn't a new thing, we were relatively close to war in 2010 when NK sunk a SK ship and killed 104, and then when NK artilleried an SK island to hell and back and killed 4.
The tension between NK and SK has been on since the Korena war, and this has never been a new thing. The difference is that the country keeps getting shittier and closer to falling apart, and the country is becoming more hostile as their leaders get less and less competent.

Except DEFCON 1 quite literally means: "Holy shit, they're launching their missiles, FUCK FUCK FUCK"

They also have secret plasma cannons.
