That one made me snort my coffee onto my keyboard. :v: It's amazing how hard these people will work to avoid progression of rights in ways that don't affect them at all. If you believe you son wants an action man [sp]he doesn't[/sp] it's not like target are going to force you to get him a matching barbie, and if you needed the signs to tell whether it was a 'boy toy' or 'girl toy' then maybe your rigid genders aren't as rigid as you thought.
I played with Barbies in pre-school. I'd imagine most boys did, provided they weren't actively stopped. The only reason I became aware that they were girl's toys is because the adults told me they were. Apparently they had never heard of Wonder Woman.
Because 4 hours ago, it was smaller, and 3 people felt like sharing the same thing at relatively the same time which wasn't discussed in this thread. It's not rocket science. Except Handsome Matt, that was literally late as hell.
Okay, the second one probably didn't see the first, but the third one might have been able to see it and the fourth and this new guy definitely could have been able to see it.
I legitimately wanted an easy bake oven when I was a kid. But they only came in girly ass pink :(
fun fact they come in gender neutral colors now
fun fact they come in gender neutral colors now
It's a bit weird that some colors are considered gender-specific to begin with.

Allahu Akbar.
Keep posting that one picture and it may as well become the next 'That Cat'.
I wanted one because who the FUCK doesn't want a toy that makes FOOD but noooo gender norms are a thing so I can't have the TOY THAT MAKES FOOD
I remember when I was a kid my sister was gifted one of those barbie toys where you would place the barbie(that had wings for arms) on a spinner, pull a cord and the barbie would fly really far up. It was fucking awesome and we would play together with it outside and the thing would get some really mad air time if you pulled hard enough. This fucking thing: It looks girly as fuck but I didn't give a shit, this thing was awesome.
It's a bit weird that some colors are considered gender-specific to begin with.
You know what's funny? Decades ago it used to be the inverse of today, blue was a girl color and pink was a boy color.
Isn't that the one that got recalled after blinding a bunch of kids due to flying directly into them after liftoff? :v:
Isn't that the one that got recalled after blinding a bunch of kids due to flying directly into them after liftoff? :v:
Hah that's news to me, never had it hit me in the face. You could direct it's flight by leaning it before launching, kids probably leaned it towards themselves when pulling the cord or something. I mean you're supposed to launch the thing above head level to prevent such things but I guess there would be kids that wouldn't do this.

Honestly, I think dropping the label would be a good idea but some people are saying "YA WELL THE BARBIES NEED TO BE WITH THE GI JOES OR ELSE THATS SEXISM" no that's just marketing. (heavy paraphrasing) Little girls/boys don't want all the other shit found in the same aisle as the GI Joes/Barbies, call it gender roles or evolutionary psychology or what the fuck ever, but all the toys in the isle are where they are for a reason. This is basic marketing 101, you put like-minded or related shit next to each other and you'll sell more of both. It's why the phone chargers are next to the phones, and on the other side of the chargers is the prepaid cards because contracts are the most important, chargers are something everyone needs, and finally the prepaid cards are there nearby so the chargers can get the business of both. I support Target's decision to drop the labels, but holy shit this isn't some social revolution everyone calm down.
Honestly, I think dropping the label would be a good idea but some people are saying "YA WELL THE BARBIES NEED TO BE WITH THE GI JOES OR ELSE THATS SEXISM"
Nobody's saying that Obviously the GI Joes would be in the action figures section, and the Barbies would be in the dolls section. GI Joe accessories would also be in the action figures section, and if you want a fuckin car for your Barbie you go to the part of the dolls section with the huge barbie logo on it. It's not hard. Even if grouping "girl's" toys works well from a marketing standpoint the issue is that splitting things into two distinct categories like that reinforces gender roles and influences kids' choices and interests, and in extension later life choices. Which is pretty important, so I do think this should be celebrated. Toy stores have been doing this gender neutral thing in Sweden for years and it works fine
It's a bit weird that some colors are considered gender-specific to begin with.
even more weird is that the colors for each gender were originally the opposite of what they are now and switched in the 30s and 40s.
I wanted one because who the FUCK doesn't want a toy that makes FOOD but noooo gender norms are a thing so I can't have the TOY THAT MAKES FOOD
They made one for boys, too. All the molds for foods were in the shape of bugs and worms and such. I had one and it ruled. I could make six gummy worms over the course of, like, an hour.

Actually a whole other thing but I don't want to hamfist it into this thread. Kids play with what they like playing with. This was a hilarious ruse though.

It's interesting to note that various studies have been done regarding gender and colour; two different ones (Eysenck, 1949, and Birren, 1952) found that women consistently placed orange at the bottom of their list of favourite colours, while it was always in the top 5 of men's lists, and also that men preferred yellow to orange and the opposite being true of women. Women were found in Radeloff (1990) to express having a favourite colour more than men, and men generally preferred bright colours to soft colours. Obviously a lot of that is the result of socialisation, but it's an interesting study. The thing with gendered marketing is that businesses really don't like having overlapping demographics; they'd much rather have one product targeted to one or two separate markets - that's why generally there are very few superhero toys featuring the superheroes favoured by girls. That's slowly coming to an end as business sees they're likely to get support for not doing that, but it's still deeply ingrained in marketing culture.

I mean just for logistic purposes - if you had one product that targets everyone, you would have less unsold product (it's easier to accurately produce to larger demand), you could develop fewer ads, and so on. I mean maybe you could argue that targeted marketing can get better reception, but that still doesn't demand separate products.

Consumer behaviour is thus easier to predict based on one characteristic, usually age, gender, income, location, that sort of thing. Like I said, it's slowly going out as the traditional divides start falling down, but it'll take much longer yet.
