They wouldn't have been able to hold onto it, had they tried. Falklands was tricky enough, fighting the PRC over Hong Kong wouldn't have really ended well.
China wouldn't have done anything against another nuclear power.
China wouldn't have done anything against another nuclear power.
Who says it would ever have gone nuclear, or that either side would consider their use? I doubt Britain would've done anything if China had overrun it, because there's not a whole lot that could be done without a severely costly military campaign.
Otherwise they'll start losing business as Beijing's grip over Hong Kong tightens. We can always find another country to do most of our manufacturing.
This doesn't make much sense as very little manufacturing is done in Hong Kong anymore but is instead done in mainland China
Funny how most of these ex-UK colonies would be better off if the UK still held them
Palestine with these conflicts
India with their rape problems
Nigeria's Ebola outbreak may not be as serious
Pakistan is a terrorist hotbed
Now Hong Kong with their democracy problems, a shame we only rented it...
Hong Kong was not democratic under the British, its chief executive now is basically the colonial governor by another name
the british lease on the new territories was up. They could have kept the island of hong kong itself but that would have been a mess. I still prefer this deal over having all of HK straight up reclaimed by china, this 50 year interim ain't half bad.
They made these deals with the Qing Dynasty and Nationalist China (Taiwan now). If anything they should have had no obligation to the peoples republic.

By the same logic the PRC had no obligation to uphold deals made by previous regimes under duress

The only nuclear powers who have been stupid enough to go against another nuclear power are India and Pakistan. The risk of someone upping the ante to nuclear warfare is too great a possibility.
Why the fuck is China even doing this? It's going to be more trouble than it's worth to try to enforce a non-democratic ruling over a city that's decidedly more democratic than all of mainland China. No one but the most hardcore Beijing supporters are going to want this.
Hong Kong is essentially the capital center of China, and it's population grows massively. They're trying to assert control.
Imagine if NYC didn't have to follow US federal laws.

It's kinda convoluted, but a lot of the companies are headquartered in HK while manufacturing is done in the mainland.

There's a shitload of TNCs setting up offices in Hong Kong so they can deal with factories in China but also not have totally shit living conditions
Honestly, Hong Kong was way better off in the Union.
I'd love to see Hong Kong as a member again someday.
It's like China doesn't even care about what the people in Hong Kong want.
Because they don't. They don't even care what the Chinese people want, they only care about the party and its members.
I remember the last time there was a resistance to Beijing's authority by pro-democracy activists. Around a thousand people died.
Is there a reason why Hong Kong isn't reverted to a fishing village yet

But I like it where I am now.

And I'm sure citizens of all those other countries like it where they are too.

Right??? Right???
Personally I think should they continue and ethical democratic rule declines in Hong Kong, I wouldn't be surprised if all of the major banks / corporations / companies started relocating. Hong Kong is declining into a lost cause for the people who live there. It may even cause a major decline in the stock market because of the instability of the region itself.
