Don't want to go too off-topic here, but when the Queen does die, it's going to be a bit of an awkward situation. I am naturally opposed to the monarchy, it's a useless relic from an immoral age that I think worsens the already overwhelming, suffocating class-ism that permeates the UK. Having said that, the current face of it is a cool grandma, and that makes it a bit more tolerable. Once she's gone though, I don't know what will happen. The rest of the royal family are too much of a bitter pill to swallow, Prince Charles especially. He's got a big, sneery toff face and there have been issues concerning him corresponding with government officials. The obvious solution to this would be to skip him and go straight to Prince William, who is very popular with his young wife and family, but they literally can't do that without changing the system, and the system can't be too modern because modernity is like the antithesis of the monarchy. Holding a hugely ostentatious coronation ceremony in a time with so much austerity would be a disaster as well.
The Queen's coronation was held when Britain was still on rations. People don't care too much about that.
Frankly I hope that Canada becomes a republic when she dies. I was born a subject, but I want to die a citizen.
for some reason i would like to hold on to that last shred of national identity
for some reason i would like to hold on to that last shred of national identity
Our nation is defined by much more than a foreign grandma.
Our nation is defined by much more than a foreign grandma.
Yeah but if you stop talking to her you won't get sent a box of Malteasers every Christmas you cheeky little sod.
Frankly I hope that Canada becomes a republic when she dies. I was born a subject, but I want to die a citizen.
Oh come on, don't be so overly dramatic. We're not subjects. The Prime Minister has more power over us then she (or the Governor General) exercises on a daily basis. If the Queen or the GG ever tried anything controversial we'd probably kick them out.

And frankly there are times I wish they would so we could. I am a staunch republican.
She could be invincible too. No one's mortally wounded her yet so we can't be certain.
She has a cold. Immortals can get the sniffles.
It literally makes no difference other than name.
He's not saying he wants to go kill all royals, it's perfectly logical and reasonable to prefer to be called one thing over another. It's not like you can't care about bigger issues simply because you'd rather smaller ones didn't exist.
The Queen's coronation was held when Britain was still on rations. People don't care too much about that.
I know, and it was a worry back then as well. Just because the coronation went alright 65 years ago doesn't mean that they shouldn't be a bit more respectful if we have another one today. Either way I think it's a bit silly to say that "people don't care about that", when you already hear people complaining about the cost of renovating Buckingham Palace, or how gross it looks when the Queen talks about the country struggling with poverty, while she's literally sitting on a golden throne. [editline]6th January 2017[/editline]
Legalities aside, It makes no difference, if the monarchy was abolished the life of the average Canadian wouldn't change.
I just want to point out that "nothing would change" is perhaps the weakest of arguments for keeping the Queen as head of state. If nothing changes when you remove her, what possible reason is there for keeping her?
Fun fact: Canada was the first in the Commonwealth to put the Queen on money, by putting her face on a coin when she was still a young princess. Canada's love affair with her maj is woven into the tapestry of 20th Century Canada.
kinda weird to think that when the next monarch comes in they will probably be on new coins produced. the queen has been around longer than the current currency used in australia.

Much of this could probably exist without the Commonwealth, but formal membership strengthens all this.
