If it happens, which it won't.
And uh, how do you know that
And uh, how do you know that
I'm just staying positive. I don't know for sure but it's better to believe it won't. Also the experts don't seem too worried so that's reassuring.
In the end it doesn't really matter if it will happen or if it won't, what matters is how they handle it. And right now I'd say they're doing a damn good job at containing the situation especially after all of the shit that has been thrown at them.

It just amazes me that they're going through all of this trouble to get back on their feet. They know the world is watching them and they're going to give it their all to rise from the mess they're in. I'm 100% confident in the Japanese people right now.
If they wanted to they could have given up. It'd be really hard to keep that motivation of wanting to keep your country safe after hearing a report of most of your homeland being gulped up by the ocean.
They've got a volacno on their shoulders now, apparently it became undormant about a month ago and is now spewing ash and dust clouds.
You'll only really know about the radioactive cloud untill the meltdown actually happens
there wouldn't be a radioactive cloud even if meltdown occurred
this is not same kind of reactor as in Chernobyl, the chance of it actually even breaching the reactor containment chamber is less than 1 per cent.
There has been an explosion at a fuel oil tank at a thermal power plant in Fukushima prefecture, Jiji is reporting.

That doesn't sound good.

0631: This is the first time today that we are hearing of problems in Reactor 2. This morning, there was a huge explosion at Reactor 3, and there was a blast at Reactor 1 on Saturday. But both of those reactors are said to be intact.
What the fuck?

This has been posted a lot before, my reaction stays the same.

Those people are just despicable. Calling this "payback" for the Pearl Harbor bombing and just completely ignoring the fact that the US nuked them and just going "lol dont mess with the US" makes me sick.

We citizens here in America gripe about how much it sucks to wake up in the morning and how much it pisses us off when our cell phone quits working, yet all of those poor souls in Japan sit idly by and watch as their country is slowly decimated.
[editline]14th March 2011[/editline]
And this handful of idiots manage to get people to agree with them.
Never believe the government, they downplay everything
but companies like BP clearly tell us the truth
they're equally fallible.

0723: The US Seventh Fleet has moved its ships and aircraft away from the stricken Fukushima plant after discovering low-level radioactive contamination, Reuters reports. The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan was some 160km offshore when its instruments detected the radiation in a plume of smoke and steam released from the crippled plant. But officials said the dose of radiation was about the same as one month's normal exposure to natural background radiation in the environment.
What about Hokkaido? Is there any information about Hokkaido?!
No it can't. What would blow up? Moderating fluid is water there and afaik there is nothing to stop pressure from getting released. A nuclear explosion cannot occur with that grade uranium. Stop pulling these arguments out of your ass.
I'm not going to argue with your sheer downs syndrome, and your "afaik".

Once again, CBF aguing with a :downs:

No, but no news is good news.

but really now holy shit I hope this doesn't become another chernobyl

It can't.
Yeah, have you read any of it? Do you know anything? No. stop talking.
So because it's positive and you get this warm and fussy feeling inside you don't care about sources? Yes? Stop talking.
:(

Not sure why you would post a screencap when this is available

When the news says the nuclear fuel rods are "exposed", what are they exposed TO exactly?
When the news says the nuclear fuel rods are "exposed", what are they exposed TO exactly?
It just means the water level on the reactor is so low that the nuclear fuel rods can generate too much heat inside the reactor which causes meltdown.
In other words: They are not underwater.
When the news says the nuclear fuel rods are "exposed", what are they exposed TO exactly?
Air. Meaning they spread radioactivity to the outside world.
Oh wait, that's full exposure. Nah just the casings inside the reactor might have melted then.
Some news from German state television:
ARD:
- The explosions at reactors 1 and 3 destroyed the outer containment (the concrete bubble), the steel casing is intact.
(I'm not entirely sure about that, there is A LOT of contradicting information, but this would explain the strength of the explosions.)
ZDF:
- Situation at reactor 1 and 3 is critical because they can't be cooled.
- The outer containment of reactor 2 is filled with steam and the pressure-relieve-valve malfunctioned, so they can't get any coolant near the reactor whatsoever. The pressure is still rising and there's fear of a third explosion.
- There are people quarantined because they were exposed to so much radiation that it would be dangerous to others.
- Lots of clothes have to be disposed of because they were irradiated.
- There is news about a large leak of radiation.
Chancellor Merkel has suspended the run-time extension for nuclear plants, some have to be shut down immediately. (There are a few old ones, nearly as old as Fukushima, I think.) Safety checks are planned for every facility during the next 3 months.
Interestingly, the shares for some solar energy companies have gained 20% in value today.
[editline]14th March 2011[/editline]
Update (ZDF, 17:59 CET):
Technicians managed to open the pressure valve at reactor 2 and they started to pump water into the containment again. Most of the gauges in the plant seem to be malfunctioning. (They aren't sure if they work because they are stuck at really concerning values.)
[editline]14th March 2011[/editline]
18:17 (CET): Japan officially asked the IAEA to send an expert team.
