Huge blast at Japan nuclear power plant - a partial nuclear meltdown has occured

I don't understand how this happens with not one but two plants. The debate over nuclear energy in Japan is still strong to this day, and to build plants that have safety failures like this is too big of a coincidence I think. I mean I understand it was a record quake, but Japan is prone to quakes and the skyscrapers all took it fine, so I just don't get why the nuclear reactors all went to hell.
Well let's see, if we're looking at a Chernobyl style event, you can expect lethal levels of radiation in a good 10 mile radius for quite a while until the dust settles.
Then you have the numerous birth defects that will inevitably result from all of the people living in the general vicinity of the reactor.
Absolute worst case a massive explosion will shower the country in radioactive particulate rendering it and a decent part of the united states west coast dangerous and/or uninhabitable.
Then there's all the ecological damage, really the list goes on.
BBC is saying there is two options, that the "explosion" was due to the steam release causing the containment chambers pressure to increase and destroy it due to the fatigue from the quake already. If thats the case the danger isn't all that bad.
However, there is also the possibility that core was actually destroyed from overheating. That's not good.

I stopped being scared about global disaster a while ago. Personally I'm curious as to what would happen in a worst case scenario.
I'd be dead in a worst case scenario, but hell, you have to make some sacrifices for curiosity.

Well, living on the West coast just got exciting.
And all this a day after I find out my mother has cancer. Isn't life just grand?
Every channel on TV is the same channel right now, all emergency broadcast.
Actually they keep changing between it and their own news, but it's still all news, nothing else on basic TV.

I'm not really that bothered at all, unless the radiation spreads.
If there is a god, he's a fucking asshole.

At least it will drive the damned valley girls to extinction.

Sorry to hear that friend. Fuck cancer. :(
Holy shit
Poor Japan :frown:

Second time she's had it, dontcha know.
And you blokes said that us gas mask owners were weird. Well who's laughing now, huh?

Why? He is :(
pfff, what a bad post
Why? It's not like he's real?
Blowout soon fellow STALKERS a japanese zone is iminent.
pfff, what a bad post
Seems to fit the situation perfectly in my opinion.
What's happened to Japan so far? Earthquakes, tsunamis of black goo that roil across the lands like shoggoths, nuclear disasters, and you all know Godzilla isn't far off.

Again with the Cali references. :v:
I live in Washington, so I can just move into the hills, or to Eastern Washington on the other side of the Cascades.

Unless shit goes south, and the entire west coast has to be evacuated. I'm sure that won't happen though.

I'm not too worried to be honest. The USA may be hesitant to pour resources into a European disaster(since we're dicks like that), but if it threatens the west coast they'll move mountains if they have to.
Man, I can't believe this is happening.
I can't believe that people would vote for Sarah Palin, or that Glee is a successful show.
Life is full of unbelievable things.
Guess they're big fans of Tupac.
Not sure if this has been posted yet but there is a live blog on the guardain website for anyone who needs updates, and aprently a chernobyl style meltdown is unlikely to happen.

Ugh great, this most probably won't lead to anything major, but expect everyone to go "See?!?! We told you nuclear energy was dangerous ASGFDSAHGFHAS".

well to be fair, it quite obviously is dangerous
cars are dangerous too, what's important is if the risks outweigh the gains
I think Japan might be the new Atlantis, Except filled with radioactive waste and residue along with lot's of murky water and ruins.

What exactly is that building that pops?
this probably won't be as bad as some people think, but it's still like...
woah
