Woah! the shockwave!
Analogy:
The reactor hall is like a swimming pool with a thermos flask at the bottom of it, and inside the flask there's a substance that, of its own volition, will generate more heat. The cooling systems surrounding the flask keep the internal temperature of the substance to within a safe level (as, if the insides get too hot, the pressure build up makes the thing go pop). What has happened is that the cooling systems have seemed to have suffered from a massive over-pressure due to the heat inside the flask. Earlier in the day, there was talk of releasing the pressure within the reactor hall, and there's a possibility that what happened is either that pressure release being a lot more than expected, or that the pressure build up was enough to cause a breach of the cooling systems. The over-pressure was enough to destroy the building surrounding the swimming pool, but hopefully the thermos flask is still in one piece, and hopefully there's still enough infrastructure in place to control the nuclear reaction to within a safe limit or 'shut it down' (which is a totally separate process from cooling the reactor)
Ah, an expert
So according to that there is now tons of debris in a half-evaporated cooling pool, where the flask underneath is (hopefully) still intact

(explosion at reactor, large amount of radiation leakage)
Will you please stop scaremongering? It's not like anyone is going to die from this.
he explosion might not kill them but these guys will

If the reactor was to say......blow is there an estimate or declared range of how big could be affected.
God bless Japan. I really loved their sushis.
It may be a stupid idea but since it's pretty much surrounded by water couldn't they just like.......flood the reactor wouldn't that help?
"Edano says Japan will allow Fukushima plant owner Tepco to fill the reactor with sea water to cool it down."
Well there you go.

Don't know how reliable it is though.

It's fake.
GSC Game Studios could use this blast as a backstory for STALKER 2.

I like when you rate dumb and it says "your paypal was successfully charged".
Well, It's time for the Japanese people to move to the mainland.
+ + + 12:29 ARD: meltdown confirmed + + +
The Japanese Nuclear Safety Authority has, according to ARD Korrspondent Robert Hetkämper officially confirmed that there have been Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown.
Damn.

Apparently it's fake, but do post it on Facebook if you are American, should have quite a splash.

I want to see what our reaction is to a genuine threat.
Perhaps we will be roused from our hedonistic slumber if we think our grapes will be spoiled.

Party like it's 1986?

Meltdown doesn't mean Chernobyl-style disaster though. Just that the Corium is eating through the concrete.

Thanks to the earlier explosion, at least we won't get a massive buildup of pressure that blows the lid off the containment building (as that's already gone, it seems) and pushes radioactive material high into the atmosphere.
Won't it be extrememly expensive for Japan to clean a reactor that just had a Meltdown?
1202: Government spokesman says the nuclear reactor container at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant has not been damaged, and the level of radiation has dropped following the explosion earlier on Saturday, AFP reports.

Chernobyl was partly responsible for bankrupting the Soviet Union.

I'm rather inclined to believe this report.
I don't mean to be a dick, but the government spokesman that says the nuclear reactor container hasn't been damaged could simply be lying to keep down panic.
I hope he was telling the truth
So many conflicting sources, can't even tell which ones to believe at this point.

Thank goodness for that.

Pretty sure if something happened all the live sources would be going fucking crazy. BBC is still just talking about earlier events, as is CNN.

Erm no, if the reactor container had blown off panic would be the last thing to worry about.

Just go with the glow.
