GAME_JAM: how Polaris' 400-thousand-dollars reality show about indie game devs crashed and burned in

I sent JonTron a short e-mail about the incident. Basically saying that he conducted himself very well, given the circumstances, and that I'm sure his fans respect him more for it. I also offered my condolences on his having to work with Matti.

I really don't see why people would care. I know that art games have a bad rap and that Total biscuit has been calling crusades about Greenlight but I really don't see why people can't just ignore things they don't like which don't affect them.
We would like to put it on Steam for free, to help spread awareness and reach out to as many people as possible.
Its free anyway.

Well, first let's get it out of the way that anyone who sends a game developer death threats because I don't like thing needs to re-evaluate their life priorities, and if they can't do that, they need to be evaluated by mental health authorities. That's taken as a given for this post.
Depression Quest is:
- a "non-game" game (compared to real games like Quake, right guys?)
- about one of the most misunderstood and misappreciated mental afflictions, depression
- taking up a slot on Greenlight that could, in theory, be a "real game" instead
- written by a woman on top of the above
If you are that certain type of asshole that doesn't see problems with sending women rape and death threats over Twitter because they made something you don't like (but are in no actual way affected by), and you see hardcore gaming as under attack by pussy feelings faggotry and buckets of low-quality Greenlight shovelware, the above is a major insult.
plus she's a girl what the fuck get your uterus off my gaming platform
Any insensitive comments above are strictly sarcastic and ironic for effect. I want to make this very clear.
This is the elephant in the room that the gaming industry and gamers as a whole don't want to deal with or talk about. It overlaps with other male-dominated fandoms: for example, Rotten Tomatoes disabled comments after the death threats against people who dared to say they didn't like The Dark Knight Rises. Batman fans can be just as demented crazy.
Females in gaming is something that a significant portion of gaming is already okay and essentially over with (witness major solidarity by the guys when Matti started dragging the awful female stereotypes around, trying to start shit), but there's also a significant portion who embody the worst of the old boys club.
there IS a lot of low quality greenlight shovelware out there to sift through for the good stuff for sure, just saying

I will never not post Gender Bender DNA Twister Extreme

Because people are idiots. Don't think about it too much.

Unless you're going to use this to justify death threats on Twitter, that's kind of beside the point. It's very true, but there's a greater sin going on here beyond Valve throwing quality control into the hands of the public.

well when i said "just saying" one might assume i was just saying it without putting any deeper meaning behind it because that isn't necessary in a post that doesn't even have punctuation
[editline]1st April 2014[/editline]
i got a death threat because i made a video about bioshock infinite that's got like 300 views, people will threaten to kill you for anything these days; it's a shitty thing that only shitty people do
Are there any more articles or further reading about this show or the people involved? I thought the story was quite interesting to read, but I'm not familiar with anything it's talking about

I'm so happy that there are amazing people on the internet.
I'm pretty happy with the ending of the story. I'm glad that even with that amount of pressure, the 'contestants' stayed true to themselves. Also, didn't The Onion parody this situation back in 2012 with Sex House?
-snip- Nevermind, it wasn't Josh Mattingly, he's not the kinda guy to pull anything remotely like this.
Regardless, the YouTubers and at least one of the developers decided to go to Disneyland afterwards, likely to get the bad taste of the debacle out of their mouths. Apparently Dodger's gonna put up some videos of their Disneyland trip later on in the week.
Still, this fiasco was such a tragedy.
I looked up Josh Mattingly because I was wondering the same thing. That dude left Indiestatik because of some pretty fucked up shit.
I love how everyone just walked off. Lots of respect for not going through with this kind of bullshit.

Jesus Christ I never knew how short Dodger actually is. Especially compared to Strippin.
The sex must be pretty awkward.
Because people are idiots. Don't think about it too much.
No, that's the opposite of the appropriate attitude to have. Innumerable campaigns of harassment against female game devs and journalists is more than just "idiots being idiots;" there are broader social causes that lead to this sort of behavior.

My post is less "ignore the issue, it's a normal state" but more "don't try to understand those people".

he's a big guy
He's an excellent villain since he basically got the contestants to walk away as heroes

Never heard of an angry mob? You've got lots of people out there, give a bit of misinformation, rile everyone up because who doesn't love a good witch hunt, and with the required effort being as low as typing some words into twitter then why not?
They're not campaigns, they're swarms, and people do it just because they're bored and it's fun. The broader social causes you're after are minor differences in opinion blown out of proportion in the internet's echo chambers, and the only thing you can do is try to defuse it or endure and wait for them to get bored.

Wow, that conversation was fucking cringeworthy. Swimming in barbed wires would've been smoother than that
I really wonder why this Leshem guy got that job.
He obviously thought throwing in some sexist, sensationalist, incendiary comments would pay off, increase the show's revenue etc., while it's so obvious to everyone else that it wouldn't. He's not just an asshole, he's an idiot.

Like Ben Kigsley but with way more douche and a lot less charm.

In a more traditional TV reality show it totally would've worked though.
Put a pair of glasses on this guy and he's Gordon Freeman.
[sp]And now you know why Gordon Freeman doesn't talk.[/sp]

nah. he looks too much like C&C kane to be freeman.
In a more traditional TV reality show it totally would've worked though.
Yes, but the participants in traditional TV reality shows are very gullible people desperate for attention. Whereas indie game devs and youtube personalities are people who got into their respective fields largely to avoid exactly this kind of meddling.
Hope that Jontron guy has his youtube account banned or something, he's a faggot and doesn't deserve any money like the rest of the youtube money making faggots. they're all the same.
In a more traditional TV reality show it totally would've worked though.
Yeah I think this guy probably gets the job done. It's just that this time he was dealing with people who aren't in his industry and don't want to be in his industry. He had no leverage in other words.

If you're trying to be funny, stop.
Alright, I went and read the entire article (quite well written, worth pointing out, kudos to the guy who wrote it).
I was pretty fucking baffled by the entirety of it. Hard to believe. Pretty fucking incredible.
I hope Matti will end up flipping burgers now. He's not worthy of any higher responsibility job.
