Trump says US-Mexico wall may not need to cover entire border
Honestly, I think we should just standardize the border wall across the entire border, and then put up National Guard/Army forward operating bases all along the border that'll go on patrols aiding US Border Patrol
no, the national guard is not a border guard and putting military bases on the border would be a rediculous waste of resources as well as again not being part of their purpose
turn the northern states of mexico into buffer states. pay their rulers monies to help patrol the area and crack down on druglords, illegal immigration, etc like the romans used to do
there's 6 states on the border there

Or y'know we could give up on the foolhardy notion of locking down the border through sheer brute force
FOBs, walls, ground patrols, air patrols, response teams, all this shit costs absolute assloads of money and gives you exactly fuckall in return. Illegal immigration is doing nowhere near the level of harm the usual suspects are so desperate for everyone to believe and sinking multiple billions of dollars into militarizing the border to a friendly, allied nation is about as much of a solution to the problem as using a sewing machine to fix a hole in tire
This isn't a military problem. This isn't a law enforcement problem, and no matter how many billions of dollars you sink into law enforcement and military solutions, you're still going to get fuckall for all your trouble
It's already been brought up in every single thread about illegal immigration, so it might as well be brought up in this one too that the vast majority of illegal immigrants wouldn't even have been stopped by tighter border control. It's constantly pointed out that the vast majority arrive in the country on perfectly legal visas and then simply overstay their welcome. No amount of trucks, troops, helicopters, cameras, fences, walls, bases, patrols, whatever the hell you'd like to go stick out into the desert are stopping those immigrants
It's a complete fucking red herring. A colossal money sink with no net benefit to anyone but a handful of Republican senators hyping the issue up into a hot button crisis level problem to rile up a very certain demographic of their voter base
I don't think people realize just how fucked up Mexico is. Mexico is not a rich country, it has a very serious problem with the cartels, it has a very serious problem with corruption. I feel like it gets forgotten that people are leaving Mexico for a fucking reason
If you really want to pour billions of dollars into reducing illegal immigration from Mexico, then maybe you should consider putting it into projects that will make Mexico a more desirable place to live. Maybe start putting all that money into projects at home that affect Mexico just as much as the US like the war on drugs. Maybe stop falling for the goddamn red herring that is tighter border control to fix what is essentially a manufactured problem
I think it's insane that people still think we just have to tighten border security more and that will somehow nullify all the reasons these people come to the US in the first place

oh my god fucking thank you
It feels like so many people tend to either overlook or flat out forget this little point.
I actually heard that Immigration from Mexico to the US has actually been down because the mexican peso was doing very well. Of course that might be out the window now since trump was elected.
