Fiona Apple Facing Up to 10 Years in Jail Over Texas Marijuana Bust, Sheriff's Department ask her to
You said she shouldn't have been arrested, which is bullshit because cops don't make laws, they enforce them.
Bringing that up just marks you as ignorant, scooter.
Cops have a huge impact on the law based on what they are and are not willing to do, they're not mindless servants of the law. There's that whole "discretion" thing which occurs independent of what statute states should occur.
possession of marijuana affects literally nobody
Literally the worst reponse to that question ever.
Just because something doesnt hurt someone, doesnt mean you cant go to jail because of it.
[editline]26th September 2012[/editline]
Technically you can go to jail for jaywalking
Well, that's the maximum sentence. I doubt she'll actually get 10 years.
She probably won't get anything at all.
possession of marijuana affects literally nobody
Like it or not it's still illegal and you will go to jail for it. The fact that it shouldn't be illegal is irrelevant.
So? The law is the law.
That doesn't prevents others from calling it a stupid one. To be frank, I agree with them. Not only because the personal use of marijuana doesn't affect others, it can make her into a worse stare she was previously since she can potentially get bad behaviors from inmates and she would have trouble re-adjusting to society.
Guys when they say up to 10 years they're talking about the maximum sentence, not her sentence. I doubt she'll get anywhere near 10 years.

Where did I say anything about cops only strictly following the law? Cops don't make law, they enforce the law. Which is correct. They can and should use discretion while enforcing the law, but this does not do away with the fact that if you want weed to become legal, you'll have to try and change the law, and not direct your anger at the police whom are only doing their job (saying she shouldn't have been arrested is blaming the police for doing their job, instead of blaming a law that should change).
10 years for having marijuana? stupid.
10 years while being a celebrity and not getting special treatment compared to a normal citizen? Awesome.
the point of this post was I'm glad somebody realized that being a celebrity shouldn't mean you get special law treatment, not that she deserves 10 years. I'm glad you all failed to understand that.
There are a lot of "stupid laws" but they still are the law, like it or not and you are expected to follow the rules set by society or face the consequences.
Look at this whole "doesnt affect anyone thing"
The weed you just bought from the dealer costed you $50.
The dealer now uses that $50 and combines it with his other $500 to buy a stolen gun
That gun is then used to shoot someone.
There you go. You buying that weed just killed someone.
or lets look at it from the buyers view:
You buy weed for $50
Thats $50 less then you had
Thats one less tank of gas
You committed a crime
You then go and smoke it in a public place (but for personal use)
Some child gets second-hand smoke
The smoke from weed has been linked to MANY terrible things
That weed you just bought just increased some kids chances of having a defect later in life (and your own).
Someone give this man a medal.
he's a cunt.
Both Apple (not to be confused with the company of course) and Fleming are acting like children in this case. She demands to be released because she's ''fucking famous'' and he's practically mocking her (not very professional).

But he could've been more professional in the way he handled his retort, he's being pretty rude to her in my opinion and that really cheapens his reply to her equally idiotic outburst at the officers who apprehended her.
Every time weed is mentioned in SH, the thread turns to shit.
The fact that it shouldn't be illegal is irrelevant.
no I'm pretty sure that's relevant when someone is facing 10 years for something that shouldn't be illegal at all
"The law is the law" is a stupid argument if the law in question is a stupid law.
would you be singing the same tune if it was 1950 and someone was arrested for sodomy? Since the law is the law, after all.
I can understand people getting tired of hearing that weed should be legalized since it gets said so often on FP but it doesn't make it not true and it doesn't make it irrelevant here
I can understand people getting tired of hearing that weed should be legalized since it gets said so often on FP but it doesn't make it not true and it doesn't make it irrelevant here
We're not saying it shouldn't be legalized, we're saying that despite that, she broke the law as it currently is.
Its so weird watching how facepunch reacts to weed, there's the "pro weed" group, the "against weed" group and the "against pro weed group" group. Whenever weed is mentioned, all the groups clash until one is left the most popular for the undecided sheep to follow.

If you want to argue that weed can affect other people, why not bring up that you're potentially supporting violent drug cartels? Of course, that problem(and the one you made up about buying a gun, which isn't specific to weed, just selling stuff in general) only exist because weed is illegal. Secondhand smoke is the only legitimate argument, but even that doesn't warrant an outright ban.

We would be against the law, but the police aren't to blame for the law.
"Facing up to 10 years" doesn't mean she will actually get 10 years. Relax.
Lots of people that get arrested for possession all over the world can face up to 10 years or longer, but don't get jailed so long (first offense, judge that isn't retarded, ...)
Fact of the matter is, just like some people who got showered with boxes said, right now possession of marihuana is illegal in the United States.
Yes, making it legal, or just decriminalizing it (which is better than making it legal IMO), would benefit a lot of people but right now it's illegal and she should've thought about that when she decided to cross a border with a shitload of weed.

To be honest, I just hate any argument where people drone on and on saying the same exact thing and never make any headway.
Like the "Skyrim sucks" arguments in the Elder Scrolls thread.
Durgs discussion pls go.
Someone give this man a medal.
haha yeah kickass! he arrested her for smoking weed!! fuck yeah
Forgive me of my ignorance, but who is Fiona Apple and why is she special. I assume she is a singer but as for being a celebrity I have never heard of her.

You've never seen a drug dealer in your life.
Ever.
Stop believing what you see in TV shows and shit.
That's a whole different discussion and has nothing to do with the fact that she broke the law and got arrested for it.
His comment was related to Ethics not Law.

The only thing I've heard about her is her insanely long album title.
