10 liters of coke is roughly 1 gram of caffeine, which would not kill you even if you took it all at once. Caffeine has nothing to do with this.
Sustained dosages of caffiene can cause muscle spasms, or "caffeine jitters". She died of cardiac arrhythmia which merely means an unusual beating of the heart, caffeine can cause that. Under normal circumstances, it wouldn't cause any immediate problems, but is having a constant dosage of 1 gram of caffeine a day normal?
Unrelated to the news is it me or Coke tastes worse than Pepsi? I actually tried both one time and Pepsi felt a little sweeter or something.
I swear I read this like a year ago, and even back then they tried blaming it on the coke.
How the fuck do you even drink 10 liters a day? Think about the money spent on that 2L of Coke is like 2$ Which means 10$ a day 300$ a month solely on Coke. Jesus
Pretty sure if you drink 10 litres of water a day you're not going to be healthy for long
as long as you drank something that had electrolytes to supply for what was flushed. drinking a lot of water flushes your electrolytes and if you drink too much your nerves can't function
If caffeine "caused" it, it's likely she had heart problems to begin with.
It probably was one of the notable factors, but the overall diet is the main issue. Technically, saying she died of cardiac arrhythmia doesn't mean much by itself, it could mean her heart was beating too fast, too slow, out of tempo or still beating in the regular fashion but with an unusual factor.
as long as you drank something that had electrolytes to supply for what was flushed. drinking a lot of water flushes your electrolytes and if you drink too much your nerves can't function
So 10 litres a day of Gatorade is fine? Awesome. I'll report back with the results.
So 10 litres a day of Gatorade is fine? Awesome. I'll report back with the results.
It's not that bad as pure water, but unless you're XXXXXL size you can't handle that much of liquid.
I just... You notice your loved one being dangerously addicted to a substance, and the thought of it being at least a little unhealthy doesn't cross your mind? Where's you rational thinking you goddamn sheep
Well this is New Zealand...
I don't even drink 10 liters of any liquid in a day.
Drinking 10L of coke per day could be more "healthy" than drinking 10L of water in one day. Thats because coke has lots of misc stuff, so it doesn't dilute your chemical balance as badly as 10L water.
what the fuck meth/paint/cocaine combo have you been huffing recently [editline]13th February 2013[/editline] can I have some? [editline]13th February 2013[/editline] for obvious reasons most of this is unhealthy water ingrediants: Water
I'm surprised she didn't die from drinking 10 liters in a single day. Reminds me of that "hold your wee for a Wii" controversy where a woman died from water intoxication. Caffeine is an addictive substance, contrary to popular belief, and in large quantities can cause death. You build up a tolerance to it when you use it, like other drugs, so that eventually that one cup of coffee or one can of soda isn't enough to wake you up or quell the desire for it. She obviously must have had a really bad caffeine addiction if she would have the shakes from not getting it, as that's a sign of withdrawal. People addicted to caffeine can have it where the reward centers of their brain don't fire for other drinks, and caffeine drinks become more rewarding than other liquids like water. It can get to a point where the reward centers don't fire for getting caffeine, but one will still crave it, similar to other psychotropic drugs. It's a shame she didn't get help, and it's also a shame that her family was fucking stupid and didn't realize after they had to get rid of her teeth due to decay that she might have a problem. I'm one to talk, though. I sometimes drink up to three 20 Oz bottles of coke a day. If I don't drink it at least once a day or so I get anxious and uncomfortable, and I've managed to go weeks or months without it only to have a drink of coke at a restaurant and then end up wasting a $1.50 every day or more just to get a bottle out of a vending machine. It's a huge money sink for me, and if I'm on a coca-cola binge then I have trouble drinking water because it's not satisfying. I like to joke with my friends that I'm addicted to coke, but I do have a problem since I'm 30 pounds overweight, and if I cut the cola out of my diet I'd lose all of it within a few months.
correct me if im wrong but i believe drinking 10 liters of water will kill you
10 liters a day? At that point she's lucky she didn't just die from water intoxication.
10 liters of water in a day would be incredibly damaging to you, let alone drinking 10 liters of coke. I do like to drink coke, but 7 liters in two days was even way too much for me.
well maybe god should put warning labels on fucking water then
oh no I drink 10 liters a day how long do i have to live
( $4.07 p/b x 10 p/d ) x 7 p/w = $284.9 She was spending $284.9 a week on coke. Where the hell did she work?
( $4.07 p/b x 10 p/d ) x 7 p/w = $284.9 She was spending $284.9 a week on coke. Where the hell did she work?
Coca Cola factory, obviously.
Should have laid off the Coke.

Where the hell do you live. 2 Litters bottles were used for the bellow examples. 1.67 x 5 = 8.35 a day, 8.35 x 7 = 58.45 a week. Then usually they're cheaper, ie 0.99 x 5 = 4.95 a day, 4.95 x 7 = 34.65 a week.

According to my googles, the half-life is at most about 6 hours which can be increased by up to 50% if you're a smoker, so lets say it was a 9 hour half-life. 1g becomes 500mg in 9 hours, 250mg in 18, ~.19 in 24. Worst case, she drinks all the soda at the same time and consumes 1g caffeine all at once, so her caffeine level is at 1.19g, which halves 2.66 times in 24 hours... etc, the equilibrium stops it at her having at most about 1.23g of caffeine in her at one time, which is a lot but nowhere near lethal amounts of caffeine (5g according to the internet) She was just a really unhealthy individual pls don't blame my caffeine.

Where the hell did she work?
I did some quick calculating and if she was getting them from Countdown (supermarket) then she would've been spending approx $115 NZD p/w (which is $98 USD). Which is still a huge fucking money sink, max I would spend weekly on any fizzy drinks is $20.

This is going of my recollection of a class I took freshman year so I might be off.
10L a day... That's 1080g of sugar a day. Jesus christ.
I read this story somewhere else, at 7:36 AM, so I set out to drink five 2L bottles of diet Mt. Dew, to see how much it really was. It's 2:51 AM right now, and I've only managed two and two-thirds of them. I have no idea how the fuck she managed to drink that much, honestly, because I literally did nothing besides watch movies and drink pop. I can't stop peeing and burping, either, I think I might have accidentally broke my body. I've induced vomiting so I can (at some point) finally go to bed without spontaneously pissing myself. I have to admit, she had a unique skill that I cannot acquire myself.
Hah, I remember hearing about this today on the radio on my drive back from campus and I was reading it earlier on BBC. How someone can chug that much soda down in a day EVERY DAY is insane. I really think her family should of been more insistent on getting her help. Drinking soda to the point where she'd go nuts if she didn't have it every day should of been a flag to get her to see someone/check in somewhere, and the fact she began to have cardiac arrhythmia from it should of made someone take her in to the doctor as fast as they could. The fact she drank it to the point one of her kids was born without enamel on his teeth is a little creepy. I mean, it's her body, so okay, but I feel for the kid for the fact she kept on chugging that much during pregnancy. I don't think in any way this is Coca Colas fault, if you drink or eat too much of anything constantly in that big of amount, something's going to eventually fuck you up after a while.
Pop is incredibly addicting. Normally I'd blame the high fructose corn syrup but as far as I know, Coca Cola in New Zealand is made with real sugar. People should just stick to coffee..
not correct. coke is produced as a syrup-like liquid in the US and shipped across the world to local bottling plants. this is why mcdonalds coke is the freshest available, because they carbonate it on-site. [editline]14th February 2013[/editline]
"(She would) go crazy if she ran out... she would get the shakes, withdrawal symptoms, be angry, on edge and snappy," her mother-in-law Vivien Hodgkinson told the inquest into her death last year. Harris's family told the inquest she had all her teeth removed after they went rotten due to excessive soft drink consumption and at least one of her children was born with no enamel on its teeth.
let's totally not contact a fucking medical professional over this!
not correct. coke is produced as a syrup-like liquid in the US and shipped across the world to local bottling plants. this is why mcdonalds coke is the freshest available, because they carbonate it on-site.
Only US coke (and perhaps Canada) has HFCS, rest of the world uses sugar. Cheaper outside the US to use sugar as we don't have the unusual combination of tariffs and subsidies that make HFCS cheaper to use. Dunno if they have factories outside the US for international supply or what.
I have a question which wasn't entirely addressed by the article - seeing as how in most supermarkets I've seen in the US and the UK have Coca-Cola, Pepsi and also a slightly cheaper supermarket brand of cola, wouldn't it be kinda dangerous from a legal standpoint to use a picture of a Coca-Cola bottle or has this bit (about her dying exclusively from coca Cola) being conclusively proven? This woman must've had serious issues to chug that much of coke a day - I wonder if she actually had any teeth left.
