So if I don't do a clean install there's a risk that things might not work correctly?
Yeah you run the risk of shit getting horribly broken. It's why my desktop still runs 7. It would only run for about 2 minutes before BSODs would occur.
So if I don't do a clean install there's a risk that things might not work correctly?
I upgraded from Windows 8.1 when it first came out, but after a month, I did a clean fresh install. I can't say whether the bugs I had when I upgraded from Windows 8.1 were due to the OS being still a few days old and very buggy or because I upgraded directly from Windows 8.1. I'd recommend backing up your stuff before upgrading. Upgrading barely took me 20 minutes, and even when I did a fresh install a month later, it barely took me 30 minutes to install. It of course depends on your computer how fast it upgrades/installs. By the way, downloading and installing the Windows updates after it finished installing barely took 30 minutes. On Windows 8.1, it once took almost 5 hours to download and install all of the Windows updates. So, Windows 10 seems to download and install updates much faster. Windows 10 is generally faster than previous versions, from what I've experienced.
You guys are really making a big deal out of it. Had 7 on the desktop, upgraded to 10 (with preserving files), everything worked fine.
I started using Windows 10 about a month ago The other day a bluetooth adapter I just bought that was made when only Windows 7 was out had crashed my $700 pc Also a linksys network adapter I got doesn't even work unless I put stuff into the command prompt every time I turn on the pc from sleep/shutdown Probably just freak accidents though :v:
what model is the adapter? I use one as well but I had to go and find the drivers for it myself to get it working properly. you could try that.
If that's the case, I'll probably have to skip windows 10.
It's not like doing a clean install is actually hard or anything. Though it's also a great excuse to get an SSD. I probably wouldn't have picked one up if I wasn't clean installing Windows 10 :v:
People have been complaining about these notifications for ages but I've never seen a single one and I'm on win 7. I dunno I kinda' want to upgrade to win10 too, I've just been too lazy...
I have the home version of Windows 7 so I probably won't upgrade since I'll have to buy the other version to have the same amount of system control as I do now.
Just noticed that my laptop, which is on 8.1 ever since it came out, has not gotten any W10 notifications. I actually can't seem to upgrade it. I'm pretty sure that the key that my laptop is using was originally an MSDNAA W8 key, is it not eligible for upgrade?
I swapped over to W10 last night. It was a pain in the ass to get done. The upgrade service from the little Windows icon on the system tray broke - the installer it downloaded was corrupt, as the upgrade got as far as the blue windows logo and the little loading dots froze. Had to delete it, but then it wouldn't redownload. I had to use the Media Creation Tool to download a working installer, which thankfully worked on the first attempt. Doing it through Windows Update just didn't want to work on my Windows 7 install. Now that it's up and running, though, it's fine. I had to reinstall my network drivers for my motherboard, so might be worthwhile for some to download their mobo's network drivers prior to switching over. Overall - don't see a big jump from 7 to 10. The quick startup is nice, and there's less hanging. I turned off all the data mining stuff that I could in the settings - rather not have that eating up my network traffic. It's certainly not the revolutionary jump from XP to 7 that I had before. Guess I still need to explore the new features. I will say, though, that it was very, very convenient that I didn't have to do a clean install. Had no program compatibility issues, and all my data was saved. So I'll give them a thumbs up for ease of use when the install actually worked.
I can understand not wanting to use w10, but why not just get your free key and revert? You can then upgrade to 10 later when it's more to your liking.

It took forever to download the update when I tried it, then failed every single time anyway. The media creation tool is basically guaranteed to work and lets you do a clean install properly. That "data mining stuff" isn't going to destroy your network, I wouldn't worry about it for that reason. It should only be sending data when you're clearly not using the machine and the data it sends shouldn't be monstrously huge. I'm not gonna whine about you disabling it, the option is there for a reason after all. Just that the fear of it ruining bandwidth is not really that big a problem.

I have automatic updates turned off and have yet to see it pop up.
Stuck in the middle of this right now. I don't want to miss out on the new directX, but at the same time I've heard that windows 10 further kills compatibility with older games. What should I do?
Moved from 7 to 10, Only issue I have had is during one update, my USB Audio Drivers borked so now my Mic, no matter which mic it is, is really quiet, no matter what I do. I even grabbed the same drivers from Windows 7 on my laptop, replaced the ones in 10, still didn't do anything. Must be a service or something I disabled. Like Cortana, or some shit Other than that, 10 has been fine. Even upgrading was as easy as pie, Then again I reformatted and installed 7 clean before upgrading just to ensure it would be
I'm using 10 but it's a clean install on a completely new machine. I'm not sure how worth it it is (I am not really using any of the new features) but it's future proof and a great OS if you like 7.
Only problem I had when I upgraded to 10 my video card not workingeven after installing the windows 10 drivers. All I had to do was do a clean install of the nvidia driver and it was fine.
Wish I could get a free install disk or something since I'm about to build a new computer where I will use Windows 10 but see no point in bothering to upgrade this one.
Wish I could get a free install disk or something since I'm about to build a new computer where I will use Windows 10 but see no point in bothering to upgrade this one.
You can download a tool off their site to set up windows 10 on a cd or usb. I have a usb with win10 on it that I've used like 4 times https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/ Download tool at the middle of the page
Are there tools to disable the telemetry bullshit?
Are there tools to disable the telemetry bullshit?
Yep.
With regards to compatibility, I think 10 is actually a bit better than 7 or 8 in that regard. It seems like some games that wouldn't run for me on 8 work fine in 10.
Is WIN 10 actually any good ?
it's actually very good but only if you do it under your own accord with a fresh install
Upgraded from 7 ages ago. Kept all my files. The only thing that stopped working was my optical disk drive, but I rarely use it these days. If I have to rip a CD or something I still have my laptop with a working ODD.
system shock 2 works fine unless by "old games" u mean like robinsons requiem which still might work
1. I love you for knowing this game 2. Works fine the only game I ever had issues with is Blood 2 because its just a badly coded game/engine. Some people get it working on Win10, some people don't have it working on Win7, its a real crapshoot of luck that game.
I have mixed feelings about windows 10. Works fine on a 3rd Gen i5 yet keeps trying to force itself on my grandparents computer and they get a bsod every other start because its a pentium d. I tried everything to get rid of with no cigar.
so my computer is almost four years old now. as is the law, at any moment this thing can just shit itself. i assume i will soon have to get a new computer. if i upgrade to windows 10 will i still have to buy windows 10 for my computer again later? otherwise i don't see how this benefits me.
If you don't get windows 10, you will be missing out on improved OS streamlining and functions / performance, improved game rendering (DX12), new CPU instruction sets (Again, could improve performance), etc. New hardware is bound to be restricted to windows 10 at some point, CPUs are already going that way and soon enough it's bound to be RAM and GPUs as well that will start seeing major benefits from using new operating systems.
Ok, so I installed W10, and it works quite well thus far. Only issue I'm having is that windows straight up removed the program that came with my GPU that I used to manually set the speed of its fans, so now I have to find some sort of substitute

The licence can transfer. You may need to call the MS-bot up if it won't do it automagically through. I upgraded to Win 10 on my old Phenom II 955/GTX 460 rig, then transferred it to my current Skylake rig a few months later with no issues. Works with basically any vendor/ manufacturer combo.
