Well it doesn't help that missionaries from the US and Europe are helping fuel this or that Islamic groups influenced by the middle-east hate it.
They're also labeled as hate groups.
I have never understood the attitude of "remember that homophobia is a western import from colonialism!!!!!" so what you're saying is, that these countries are still following an attitude that was held by the west centuries ago, and this is meant to be any better?
Believe it or not, there are way more important ideals than gay marriage to base a political structure on. And conservative thinking isn't ignorant thinking, it's something different. It's ignorant to be anti-gay however. You can be ignorant and a liberal, libertarian, conservative, whatever.
For seeing past ideology and to the supporting, yet twisted and mostly forgotten, political philosophies: I award you the "Sorry, most of facepunch will ignore you because people love to hate" award [editline]12th April 2014[/editline] But yeah, politically the terms "liberal" and "conservative" have lost all real meaning in the popular lexicon. They still have meaning scientifically, but all that most people "know" about politics was created as ideology and has only the most tenuous connection to any sound philosophy.
the reason there's a backlash is mostly because he broke anthropology rule no.1: don't fucking call other cultures 'primitive' culture is a completely socially constructed so to say one is more 'primitive' that another is just dumb. our ideas of primitivity come entirely from comparing stuff to ourselves. it's all relative. primitivity is a evolutionary idea which has no place in discussions on culture

Primitive is an odd term in evolution too, it's more like wrong tool for the job
I use primitive to refer to a society which cannot maintain large populations for long periods of time. If you had some hunter gather way of organizing say a group of 1000 people as opposed to 50, then that societies social and political institutions, economic system, technological ability, etc would be "primitive" because they would not be able to keep that number of people working and living together without it falling apart.

And are still causing a mess - remember the American fundies and Uganda?
We still make a mess with our huge influence and our lack of understanding of Huntingtonism: You can't just jump to western democracy, and the different conditions in many countries also calls for different ways of eventually reaching it.

And are still causing a mess - remember the American fundies and Uganda?
once again, labelling an entire political pole because of the actions of individuals if this was done in any other comparison, you'd be laughed out instantly disclosure: I completely agree that colonialism left a big mess behind it, but saying that the west is responsible for the work of religious extremists in pushing forward anti-LGBT laws currently is akin to saying that countries in the geopolitical east are responsible for the actions of religious extremists involved in acts of terrorism. the west is not a gestalt entity with every single citizen.
