should be given military service =/= should be offered military service
Oh I see what you're misinterpreting there. When I say 'given', I'm implying 'given the offer of military service'. Sorry about that.
Oh I see what you're misinterpreting there. When I say 'given', I'm implying 'given the offer of military service'. Sorry about that.
How am I misinterpreting when you're the one miscommunicating?
Forces hours at school are never a good thing, but especially now that schools can't possibly teach that many hours i doubt anything good comes from this.
They made it 40 hours a week for me when i was in school, but my teachers would just tell us to go home in the middle of the day and blamed the lack of hours on the school itself.
We hardly made 20 hours a week. Seriously fucked up and yet people remain positive about it.
After the crisis is over education needs a reform.
I think this would be great as an optional program at the student's request, but implementing it nation-wide is just stupid.
I think this would be great as an optional program at the student's request, but implementing it nation-wide is just stupid.
I don't really think any student would consider doing that, and the teachers wouldn't want to do it either, most teachers at secondary don't really care that much and would rather get home as soon as possible.
We should be working smarter, not harder. And school should be about preparing you for life in general, not just work.
Oh, and it is plainly obvious that
A longer day could also help stop teenagers joining gangs and be a haven from chaotic homes, he adds.
was just pulled out of his ass on the spot.
The thing is though, the people who don't go to college are generally the working class chav type who don't want to work and would rather be on the dole.
Fuck you.
I never went to collage and i have a job, i never went on the dole once when i was looking for work for the reason that i didn't want to take tax payers money, i hate every single thing about chavs and have had to spend alot of time avoiding them around the area i live, in fact not long ago a friend of mine was mugged outside my house.
Don't you fucking dare class me in the same place as those imbred fuckers, just because i'm not collage educated doesn't make me street trash.
The people who don't go to college should be given public service/military service/job related skill improvements or something.
So what about people like me who want to go to college but aren't rich enough to pay out of pocket, are too white, too able bodied and not poor enough to get scholarships, and can't get approved for a loan they'll be paying off until they're 93? Hrm?
I work from 9 'till 5 at school already. Hell, I've got classes happening on saturdays now.

This is referring in college in the UK which is for 16-18 year olds, it is free, I think you call it High School in the USA.

I wasn't classing you in the same place, note how I said "generally". I was referring to the majority of the people that didn't go to a college, not you.
There really should be better ways to let students experience the 9-5 workday.
Maybe a 2 month internship or something.

Or maybe just not try and replicate it at all.
Why should we even have to prepare students for a 'work environment'?
Back when I went to a UK high school, my days were from 8.20 till 15.20.
Unless something has changed since then, are these guys daft?
I wasn't classing you in the same place, note how I said "generally". I was referring to the majority of the people that didn't go to a college, not you.
Well gee, it's almost as if making blanket statements like that without sufficient evidence is a dumb thing to do.
I know, shock horror, right?
Edit:
Wait what why do you agree with me
um instead of making the day longer, how about just improving what you are doing.
for instance, i don't know if it's changed since my primary school days, but they ought to realize that each pupil has their own needs and can't be shaped into a single student model.

My school has a required internship for senior year. In a rural, middle-of-nowhere community.
I'm sure that working for a local farmer (or, in my case, the local animal shelter) prepares me for being a programmer, engineer, or psychologist.
Then again, maybe I shouldn't aim so high. Maybe they're preparing me to be the average kid who ends up working at a grocery store or fast food restaurant as a primary job for more than a few years.

I think that it's less to cram in more "learning" and more to just get them away from their apparently batshit parents.
It's still really, really dumb, albeit not in as much a traditional sense.

Well, if it means anything, it looks good to say you have previous work experience. Even if it really isn't that relevant in your field of study.
Actually that's not so easy in secondary, it's mandatory for all under 16s.
Some schools literally hunt down students who are skipping school.
That happens over here in Portugal. If you're under 15 and therefore still on the obligatory class schedule, cops will go down to your house and pick you up.
Sounds kind of like bullshit though.

I see nothing wrong with this proposal, If you can't handle a 8-12 hour school day, then the real world is going to suck some big nasty nuts for you. I was opposed to longer school day's when i was in school but now that i'm out i wish they would have been there for me so i could have been bettered prepared. The jobs that make the most money don't just give you normal 9-5 work day's. You'll be lucky if you work less then 12 hours.

You don't get paid for going to school.

Doesn't matter if you're getting paid or not, you're their to learn and to build up for a future not to socialize and ditch to do stupid shit. I myself fucked up by not trying my hardest and now i'm busting my ass off. I'm just saying i see no reason why it would hurt to lengthen the day up.

Because the problem isn't the length of the days, it's the material being taught. High school, in its current form, is useless.
Most kids in high school DO ditch and do stupid shit, and a lot of those kids still get straight A's. And they are praised as fucking geniuses for it, when in reality, they just copied answers more proficiently.
Doesn't matter if you're getting paid or not, you're their to learn and to build up for a future not to socialize and ditch to do stupid shit. Because "busting your ass off" doesn't equal a better future, only a very tired schoolboy who's now very pissed that he's had to spend eight hours scribbling and listening to someone drone on about stuff they don't care to learn about.
You gotta be realistic here. Not every kid is going to spend these hours "learning" because quite frankly there's better stuff to be doing, at least to them. You have to make what you're teaching grapple onto and engage them or else they'll just grow to resent your attempts. Lengthening a lesson doesn't equal more things learnt when it's essentially spent staring a blank chalkboard.
School systems around the world are weird, in Australia it's
Kindy/Prep > Primary School (1-7) > High School (8-12) > Uni/TAFE/other
In High School you have the option to drop out in grade 10/11/12 to conduct yourself in doing trade work.
At my school it starts at 8.30am and finishes at 2.45pm, having homework duration of about 2 hours (if I chose to do it, lol)
I feel sorry for you guys in the UK getting this shit, you can always wag and hide in tunnels or something.
Isn't it High School = High School?
College is mostly for people to go and learn vocations.
University is where you go to get a degree, akin to what the yanks refer to as college.
Maybe Scotland does it different from the rest of you.
That is a common misconception, as far as I know. A university is a collection of colleges. X University has an X college of music and a college of business, etc, etc.

University is what you Americans call a college, in the rest of the world.
University is what you Americans call a college, in the rest of the world.
No. People say, "I go to college." But they are still attending universities.
I can barely make it through the amount of hours already.
Labour should call for disbandment
