I am not saying the popes are assholes for something they haven't done, I'm saying they're all assholes because they've all supported the same horrible policies.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apologies_by_Pope_John_Paul_II
anyone who defends this pope is falling for his PR campaign congratulations you are easily swayed
it's so obvious. i'm actually surprised how well it's working.
I don't think people are defending the Pope, just acknowledging that he isn't Benedict levels of evil.
If only he drops his homophobia, then people will start to see a different pope and a new Shepard guiding the sheep to the right path.
Doesn't look that luxurious to me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apologies_by_Pope_John_Paul_II

The injustices committed against women, the violation of women's rights and for the historical denigration of women (10 July 1995, in a letter to "every woman").
and then the catholic church keeps treating women as inferior to men...
The traditional papal room look's like crap. The room is simpler and I think he's trying to be a populist, or he is.
anyone who defends this pope is falling for his PR campaign congratulations you are easily swayed
yes, because he seems like a nice guy I am now locked into that decision and if he starts trying to have all gays massacred and take over Europe I am going to blindly join the ranks of his mighty Catholic death squads because I have already decided he seems cool at the very beginning of his tenure as pope

Campaigns against flamboyancy are fine and all, but why not embark on campaigns regarding things that actually matter? Like a campaign against homophobia. Or a campaign against the Catholic Church's disgusting sex abuse records. Or a campaign against sexism. Or a campaign for women's rights. Or a campaign against poverty in which something more is done about it other than telling people what they want to hear and already know. But hey wow look at him wow, he lives in a smaller apartment and shit! He's humble and stuff!
you are aware he is against gay marriage
no shit really a pope, against gay marriage?
well he does seem 'down to earth' in a way. He talks like a normal person and acts like a normal person.

[editline]27th March 2013[/editline]
no shit really a pope, against gay marriage?
then how can you say he seems like a nice guy when he is such a bigot?
That looks both cool and spooky.
being an elected official of a well established organization with very clearly laid out rules is a lot different than just being a white guy in 2013. you can't guess a white guy is a neo nazi because he hasn't been elected a white guy, that pope however, he's been elected head of a group of people who are notorious for not giving a shit about a large population group. [editline]27th March 2013[/editline] people are missing your point you don't give a shit about this pope it's every pope that refuses to renounce a corrupt and hateful organization that deserves hate because they let a system like this go on
I'll try a few other examples: man fuck tim cook, i heard steve jobs was an asshole sometimes. man fuck that general in the U.S. military, general Sherman's march to the sea was unacceptable. man fuck President Lincoln, Andrew Jackson was a dick to Indians and since they hold the same position they must hold exactly the same beliefs. Do you get the point yet? Historical actions of different people in the same position says next to nothing about the person in that position. Comparing Benedict and Francis only, you see an enormous difference in their attitudes towards the church, with Francis trying to downsize and get rid of the gaudy and expensive fashion that the church has displayed for generations. On that note, Francis doesn't hate gays. I'd go so far to say that he isn't a homophobe. He views homosexuality as a sin. The church also views murder, lying, taking advantage of the poor, fraud, suicide, gluttony, alcohol and drug abuse, extreme anger, and divorce as sins. The church doesn't hate the people that do that, on basis of the fact that the Bible fucking says to love your enemy, they don't view them as any less of a person, they just don't agree with their actions and find them sinful. It's not hatred. It's a disagreement of perspective and belief. I personally disagree with a ton of sins that the church views as important. I don't share their beliefs, and so I'm absolutely allowed to think that homosexuality is perfectly fine, sex outside of marriage is A-OK, and a ton of other sins are perfectly acceptable. And that's my view. They disagree. So fucking what? Since when did it become unacceptable to not support homosexuality? People can hold any and all views that they want. You can be a fascist if you want. As long as you don't infringe on the rights of others, which the church may or may not be doing, you're okay. If a homosexual catholic comes to the church and wants to be "cured," so what? That's their belief that they're a sinful person. You can't tell a hardcore catholic that it's okay to be gay, because their beliefs don't align with that belief. That might change over time, but it's ridiculous to insist that the church immediately accept all gays everywhere. It doesn't fit in with their belief system. You see the same on the reverse side - typical reddit religious-atheists want the church to be destroyed, because it doesn't fit with their beliefs. Telling them otherwise would be met with resistance and backlash. Let people believe what they want.
no shit really a pope, against gay marriage?
So uh why should I think he's a good person despite that?
So uh why should I think he's a good person despite that?
Not a good person, just better than his predecessor.
So uh why should I think he's a good person despite that?
you don't have to.
then how can you say he seems like a nice guy when he is such a bigot?
my dad is against gay marriage, am I supposed to think he's a horrible person? ultimately I think this guy is going to move the papacy in the right direction, at least a bit. It's too hard to tell this early, but that would make him a force for good.
Itd be funny if he slipped in his nightgown and cracked his head like an egg all over the gold-trim marble flooring.
Itd be funny if he slipped in his nightgown and cracked his head like an egg all over the gold-trim marble flooring.
wow you are so edgy and cool when I grow up I want to be just like you [editline]27th March 2013[/editline]
clearly he is a saint
~~~nobody is saying this~~~
my dad is against gay marriage, am I supposed to think he's a horrible person?
Sorry man, No matter how good he is to you, i have to call your dad an asshole if he wants to deny basic human rights for a reason as moronic as a religious decree to supress sexuality.
I don't get his half-assed approach to living humbly. Sell the Vatican City at auction and donate the proceeds to charity. Donate the remaining Vatican Wealth to charity. Move into a small cave. Don't expect any recognition for your modest living nor care to even acknowledge it yourself. Actually do something humble instead of just pretending to be humble.
I'll try a few other examples: man fuck tim cook, i heard steve jobs was an asshole sometimes. man fuck that general in the U.S. military, general Sherman's march to the sea was unacceptable. man fuck President Lincoln, Andrew Jackson was a dick to Indians and since they hold the same position they must hold exactly the same beliefs.
murder, lying, taking advantage of the poor etc. all hurt other people. homosexuality does not. you don't see the difference?
You can't tell a hardcore catholic that it's okay to be gay, because their beliefs don't align with that belief.
how the fuck is it ridiculous to insist that the church acts with just a little compassion and human decency?
Let people believe what they want.
i'm not trying to outlaw catholicism, just saying the pope's a dick.
Sorry man, No matter how good he is to you, i have to call your dad an asshole if he wants to deny basic human rights for a reason as moronic as a religious decree to supress sexuality.
There's more to a person than their views on a single subject.
Sorry man, No matter how good he is to you, i have to call your dad an asshole if he wants to deny basic human rights for a reason as moronic as a religious decree to supress sexuality.
great I don't agree with him at all either, but I don't think someone is a horrible person just because I disagree with them on an issue like that. I think he is misguided. I think the Pope is misguided. (of course, he's religious and I'm not) Of course it's a completely different thing if he was covering up for pedophilia in the priesthood. (The pope I mean, not my dad) That's something he knows is wrong and is trying to hide
my dad is against gay marriage, am I supposed to think he's a horrible person?
i don't know your dad, but if he preached it to 1.2 billion people then yes. it's definitely a shitty trait.
There's more to a person than their views on a single subject.
If youre prepared to sacrifice others on the altar of your convictions ill have nothing to do with you.
i don't know your dad, but if he preached it to 1.2 billion people then yes. it's definitely a shitty trait.
I don't get it. This is the same thing that Retardation said, and I don't see how the level of respect they command from other people makes their beliefs more or less wrong. [editline]27th March 2013[/editline]
If youre prepared to sacrifice others on the altar of your convictions ill have nothing to do with you.
no one is being sacrificed. People are being denied the right to marry. That's a thing that can be fixed, even in people today's lifetimes. Killing is not.
If youre prepared to sacrifice others on the altar of your convictions ill have nothing to do with you.
Find me somebody who doesn't hold at least one belief that is generally unfavorable. Nobody is perfect, and refusing to have something to do with somebody over one view they hold is childish. It's possible to acknowledge that somebody is wrong without cutting all ties to them.
