How the hell do you patent XML?
I can make my own XML script out of thin air.

Wha- How the hell are titties under the toes?
xml = html? D:
They're both subsets of SGML. They're all really similar, just html is used for web pages. Xml has no specific usage; it's just a way to store data and use <sgml> tags to identify the data.
xml = html? D:
Anyone that writes webpages in Word is an idiot.
HOLY SHIT! WHAT!?
It's a good thing I live in Canada, but WOW! I can't believe that.

I think the phrase you're looking for is "only people who have a job or go to school use word"
I take it you still live with your parents and are unemployed

It's not a patent on XML in general; as far as I can tell, it's a patent on a certain structure of XML used as a document format. Word is not allowed to use this type of XML as a document format and must open it as plaintext.
Wow, software patents are stupid.
Also they aren't barred from selling word, they are barred from selling any version of word that opens XML documents.
.docx uses XML. They would have to remove nearly all new features from Word 2007 or create a completely new format. Also, nobody could open their old Word 2007 documents.
Please, somebody tell me it's only a joke... A freaking judge should not be THIS dumb...
This isn't local laws, this is the patent holder of the XML file format suing Microsoft for Word using that format.
Lol since when can you be sued for using xml ? It's like suing for using C++.
WHAT THE FUCK KFHDSPOJFKNAJSFHKLNSP
Bullshit!

Is Texas the Norwich of America?
Lol since when can you be sued for using xml ? It's like suing for using C++.
Since it was patented.
XML kills ppl wat r u guyz tlkin bout
What is happening to America?
They choose to do this now? After years of Word being sold? Someone's getting desperate.
They choose to do this now? After years of Word being sold? Someone's getting desperate.
desperate, the sound they'll make rattling their cage will serve as a warning to the rest.

Where are you from, smartass?
if people can't buy it they will just pirate it which is also illegal
or they will use openoffice to open XML files anyway (or notepad, which comes with windows)
I don't get it?
You could always use open office
hahahaha. java is slow as ass, and open office fucks with my tabs and spacing and just about everything format related.

EDIT:
The patent is only about Word's custom XML tagging feature. Microsoft cannot sell any versions of word that use i4i's custom XML tagging feature. However, Word is still allowed to open files that use it as plaintext, just like Notepad.
Please read this article.

EDIT: and this one
Custom XML allows people to create forms or templates such that words in certain fields are tagged and then can be managed in a database, said Loudon Owen, a spokesman for i4i. Large companies and government agencies, for example, might create such templates.
http://www.itworldcanada.com/a/Daily-News/8d7c4718-7838-4d3a-a2e2-1bad4dc3849c.html
and this one
http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=3712
These two articles explain exactly what custom XML tagging is. And I'm pretty sure it's a feature that nobody on Facepunch uses.
there is talk of a re-release of Word 2007 with a patch, which the company already has developed, that will disable the Custom XML functionality upon installation.
So they don't have to stop selling it. They can simply disable this feature which not a lot of home users will miss.
Couldn't they just package it with Office and reduce the price, claiming it is free?
Judge is obviously a Mac user.
This is whats wrong with the patent system today. Microsoft can't sell Word because some dumbass group that makes fifty million patents makes one that patents automatic xml changes, which is very broad, and not a real invention. A company from Toronto is suing a Washington company in Texas.
This is stupid bullshit and I can't believe the judge didn't see through this, it was all a money scam.

This patent is so stupid and general that you could probably download any open source program out there and edit an XML file with it. There's no point in going against a big company like Microsoft when most people who edit XML files don't even use word to do so.
And from what I read in your news article, they're making Microsoft uphold a stupid 200 million dollar fee, for what? For including XML support? What a joke.
