I think you miss the point, many of the posters in this thread seem to have irrational hatred or intolerance. Sounds like one of their traits to me.
EDIT:
Any Facepuncher who's played with a 12 year old admin in Gmod knows 12 year-olds are not fully capable of making critical decisions for others and sure as hell not capable of making critical decisions for themselves, and transgender counts as a double-crit decision.
Also school handled situation very badly. I sympathize with the parents angry at the school for not informing them ahead of time (as many of the other students did not take how they presented this info well.)
12 year old admins ≠ all 12 year olds. Besides, for these people it's something they tend to know from birth.

I'm pretty sure that the child isn't just making the decision totally on his/her own. Sexual reassignment surgery requires a very long period of consultation with a psychiatrist is most countries.

It's because they view transsexuals as a threat to their masculinity. Like they're afraid they would be tricked into having sex with an MtF transsexual, and that would somehow make them gay or something dumb like that.

This.
This is how that 16 year old got approval.
What kind of parents would allow their 12 year old to have a sex change!?
He isn't even in puberty yet.
[editline]07:44PM[/editline]
And when you're 18 you'll be completely different also.
Yep. Probably.
ITT 12 year olds defend 12 year olds.
lol yes keep on thinking that
being transgendered is a legitimate psychological issue
I just don't want to end up marrying an ex-guy by accident.
Because then I'd go to jail for several accounts of murder.
But you aren't transgendered, so you don't really know what it's like though, mr. anime avatar.
I don't see what that has to do with anything.
In puberty all sorts of hormone crap happens, you get more mature, you change your views on the world and such. He shouldn't be making decisions about the rest of his life, before he has a more... final picture of what he wants. And I will keep calling him He because as far as I'm concerned he is still a guy.

lol you're so fucking insecure about your sexuality
Here is the thing: if you couldn't tell that she used to be a guy, then what's the big problem (apart from not being able to have kids)?
If it looks female, I'd it it with a large barge pole.
I don't see what that has to do with anything.
That has everything to do with it. Don't act like you can perfectly understand what is going through the mind of someone who has a condition that you don't have.
And don't say, "oh, so you do understand?" No, I don't. That's why I'm not passing judgment on the person.
She's 17 now. I'd never guess she was ever a guy, she seriously looks great. I didn't think it was possible for it to work out so perfectly. At least, from what I can see.

If you they on hormones early it can be pretty much impossible to tell by the time that they're an adult. Puberty is really the thing that's responsible for all of the easily visible physical differences between the sexes.

Meh. Whatever, I can see your point I guess. But I still think 12 is a bit too young to make such decisions.

Ah hadn't thought about that. Makes sense.

Like I said, it's not the child making the decision alone. In most countries sexual reassignment surgery requires a very long period of consultation with a psychiatrist who has to approve the surgery.
Ah hadn't thought about that. Makes sense.
It's a double edged sword though, because 12 year olds aren't exactly that mature/smart.
It's a double edged sword though, because 12 year olds aren't exactly that mature/smart.
But the psychiatrist who handles their case usually is.

How he tell if it's really the best solution? Well, honestly, there are bigger issues in the world that should be solved then what age it's right to get a sex change at.
How he tell if it's really the best solution?
That's his job as a psychiatrist. That's what they're trained to do. There's months, years of psychological analysis and therapy involved. Procedures designed to determine whether or not a person is genuinely transgendered or not. It's not just something you can go out and do in a day.
Well, honestly, there are bigger issues in the world that should be solved then what age it's right to get a sex change at.
So what you're saying is that we should just ignore every smaller problem until all the bigger problems are fixed? Should we not bother arresting murderers until there's no more war?
Hey guys I can almost see over THE SUN and see the bullshit.

I was thinking more along the lines of we shouldn't be concerned with the morality of letting a single 12 year old screw up his life or spend time worrying about things like PETA when there is murder and such.
lol you're so fucking insecure about your sexuality

Because it basically is still a guy in disguise.
I was thinking more along the lines of we shouldn't be concerned with the morality of letting a single 12 year old screw up his life
he's not screwing up his life. Did you just totally ignore the discussion we just had? Did you ignore the fact that SRS is something that requires tons of therapy and analysis by a Psychiatrist, and that gender dysphoria, if untreated, can have a devastating psychological impact on a person?
[editline]09:19PM[/editline]
Because it basically is still a guy in disguise.
Yep, except for the breasts and the vagina and the female voice and female skin and female hormones and the female body shape, wearing the female clothing and being legally recognized as a female, it's just a guy :downs:
I guess if you had some sort of magic glasses that allowed you to see what chromosomes a person has without the necessary weeks of labwork that is normally needed to find out, you could see through the disguise.
The problem is you. You're so insecure about your sexuality that you respond with "MUST MURDER TRANSSEXUAL" rage when you're forced to consider your sexuality in any way. (having sex with a post op transsexual doesn't make you gay, don't worry about it. And even if it did make you gay, being gay is ok these days)
This is all so stupid, they should treat the mental issues before the physical ones. This is like saying the best solution to suicidal thoughts is suicide. It's retarded.
I don't like the shape of my face so I'm going to pound on it with a hammer until it's the shape I want durr hurr :downs:

Sorry if in this context it seemed like this exact 12 year old. I'm talking in general. Whether it be the dumbass that's huffing markers or drinking bleach or whatever, it's much less of an issue then we have in other places.

There isn't any other way to treat gender dysphoria. There's no "feel like a man" pill, and therapy almost never works to remove gender dysphoria.
There isn't any other way to treat gender dysphoria. There's no "feel like a man" pill, and therapy almost never works for gender dysphoria.
Therapy and denial just cause self-loathing and awful relationships.
Sorry if in this context it seemed like this exact 12 year old. I'm talking in general. Whether it be the dumbass that's huffing markers or drinking bleach or whatever, it's much less of an issue then we have in other places.
But it's not diverting resources from those other places. It's not like if we ignore transgendered people, all of the doctors and therapists are going to switch to being crime-fighters. Should we ignore people with Schizophrenia too?
Listen, it's not just some minor preference. People with gender dysphoria who are prevented from transitioning and forced to live as the sex that they are not psychologically aligned with suffer from serious psychological consequences. Depression, self-loathing, a very high chance of suicide. This isn't something we can ignore and everything will just go away.
Stop trying man.

Well, therapy as an attempt to get rid of the gender dysphoria doesn't help.
Therapy intended to teach people how to cope with it as they transition is still very important (I know you know, just clarifying for anyone else).

When he's 18 he can make this decision. In the meantime, they should focus on therapy as his mind is still developing and it may just be a phase.
