I could easily tell which ones were from arma
i was just thinking of ArmA 3 too
i think a big step to making games look more realistic is really in the animations, the way it is now you generally only have a few set animations
but if games started focusing on having much more different types of animations for even just one action, such as jumping over a wall in multiple ways or even as simple as holding a gun in different ways as different people would in real life, it would seem much more realistic
It's called euphoria.

It was mentioned in the article.

Are there any games except Rockstar or Force unleashed that even use that amazing tech?
I think if you had never played video games (or ones that claim to have realistic graphics anyway) you might struggle to tell the difference.
The pictures being fucking small is what makes it hard
Some of the pictures looked very convincing but that's because they're like 500 px wide or so
Videogames don't have the random factor, everything has to be coded in, so you can't really simulate reality with it's desperfects and randomness.

Also when the fuck will videogame makers understand that if it's cloudy and natural is the only light there is, shadows aren't well-defined

Sure you can, it just takes more processing power. We can't do that yet, but soon we will.

Also when the fuck will videogame makers understand that if it's cloudy and natural is the only light there is, shadows aren't well-defined
Because rendering blurry shadows is very expensive and using blobs is still ugly. Also shadows help define the 3d. Overcast would look almost like a flat shade making it harder to difference the distances and stuff.
I will admit the first picture caught me off guard as I couldn't tell which one is which (I'm guessing the picture to the right is the game). The other pictures are pretty damn obvious because the real life pictures have much more details.
Isn't it just projecting a gradient instead of a normal hard border shadow? Hell, if it's cloudy enough, everything's the same shade and you barely have to apply any dynamic shadows.

I'd say the third picture is the most life-like out of all of them.

You should never do that unless there's some light with falloff cutting the shadow. Shadows rarely fade from strong to light, they do not do that during cloudy time.

The problem with no shadows is that the objects will look 2d and floaty. In real world we see in 3d and we can tell that's a cube even if it has no shadow, in gaming we can't unless you use 3d monitor or some crap like that. Hence why turning off shadows isn't very cool, it damages the visuals.
Of course it's obvious when it's framed as "Which picture is from a game" but I reckon a few of these could be passed off as real if they were just slipped into articles with no clues
Fuck yeah, ArmA 2.
One of these fucking articles again.

During cloudy days, you lose direct shadows, but ambient occlusion takes over. So once we get really realistic AO, then cloudy day shadows will look right.

I get what your trying to say, but shadows are not what makes up a 2d image looking 3d. perspective is. You can easily turn off the shadows and create "HBAO" like effects and come up with some great visuals. Your character is moving around in a 3 dementional space. The perspective of the objects and the use of degrading color over space can cause a great sense of space and 3d without any shadows at all. Your giving the brain a lot less credit then it deserves. If we just stuck to a 2d image of a 3d game... 3d as in when your moving about the 3d world.... then yes just the 2d image might be difficult to judge distance, but add motion and become in that world and it will be 3d no problem.
crysis?

It's funny because you think it's really fucking obvious, but i've had moments where i went "Oh they used 3D animation for that thing in the commercial" and i ended up having to prove it was fake.
We have a trained eye apparently, something we as gamers might underestimate.
I couldn't tell the difference

I can spot the ArmA 2 airstrip texture from a mile away.

Well duh you need some kind of shading (AO in this case, but today's AO looks crap for this purpose). Sure it won't look 2d, no. But it will look like crap.

I remember this Crysis mod (photorealistic)
Little bit of jaggies, otherwise pretty good.
The first set of pictures actually got me
Enemy, MAN! to, our Front, VERY FAR!
Never beats this thought
"Enemy, SHILKA, 500 meters to our North"
"Oh no, 5, is down, 3 is down. This is, 2, I am taking command, I say again, I am taking command"
"Oh no, 2, is down, 1 is down"
Seems like there are better games to compare. BF3 with the modded colours looks so realistic.
