Of course some cops are shitty people, but most of them are probably just doing their job (and not attacking protesters). I know they probably don't want to risk it, but honestly I think the police (at least those with integrity) should simply lay down their work, and stop going to work. Either the state will have to whip out the military, which will have terrible political consequences (Russia supported or not), or they'll have to change up their shit.
you cant just leave your job like that, chances are you have worked up the ladder for many years to get a decent position and second i doubt youll end up having a very good time if caught deserting
This is why the police have been authorised to use firearms. NSFW http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=911_1390295593 NSFW I know that the authorization of firearms may sound like a drastic measure but you can see in the video (if you watch it) that the officers are being pelted with petrol bombs.
To be honest I think the Ukrainians should be occupying the various government buildings and demanding overthrow of the government.
It's stupid to kill for any reason, one way or another, and if you want to get in the gist of things, it's harder to follow something you don't believe in, than just to follow orders. They don't have to fight the protesters, and the protesters don't have to fight the police. It's still a choice, and one they'll have to live with after any of them make it. It's a hard time and I understand the troubles associated with these things, but when you seek out and brutally beat someone in the name of freedom, you're no better than those whom were corrupted in the beforehand. It's ghandi said, "an eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind." In my view, I see the protesters in a similar view to what I see the patriots, because freedom although not worth killing for, may be worth dying for, as it is a basic human requirement to have security of thought.
Considering the economical state of Ukraine, you just can't afford to leave your job like that. The cops will keep obeying the corrupt government even if most of them probably hate their guys as well
I know, I know - I understand that they won't risk losing their job. It's just a shitty situation overall.
And all will burn beneath the banners of oppresion.
That's not going to happen. We may seem like stupid, manipulated slugs, but if you let something like this go, we will strike back because we all want the same kind of ideal luxury we hear and see every day (a free, first-world country for example).
It sucks that measures like this are necessary, they had to go violent because peaceful protest is now suppressed.

Has their been any reports of gun battles between the police and protesters yet? I have seen some images of protesters pointing guns at Riot Police from behind barricades.
Complete stalemate between the police and the protesters at the square, i'm seeing a lot of thrown objects that look like Molotovs that failed to break of impact. Lots of noisemaking on the stream from the protesters, but not much else.

Police have shot a protester to death during their attack. Currently it is not known whether they over-used riot guns (rubber bullets etc) or there were actual firearms used - the protester had at least two shot wounds though. The radicals are calling for mobilization of people who own weapons. The prime minister of Ukraine says that "everything is fine in the country", "he supports people in uniform" and "all victims on the Grushevskogo street are not caused by government" (source http://www.pravda.com.ua/ ) [editline]22nd January 2014[/editline] Offices of Party of Regions (government party) are being torched right now (at least one is burning, people are calling for their torching in other cities). There has been another death reported.

That's fucked up.
