I don't consider some small bacteria or whatever on some moon or other planet "alien life". All these threads that say, oh we discovered alien life, oh it exists etc... are all just some fucking bacteria and microscopic shit. Come back when you are on the verge of breaktrough of finding intelling life. Hell even some sort of a plant would do, or anything that can be seen with naked eye
Well I can tell you where we won't find intelligent life...
The main worry is the intentions of the aliens, would they be aggressive for example. I agree with Prof. Hawking on the idea that it could very well end up like what happened when the Spanish and Portuguese found the America's and proceeded to loot everything.
What's there to take from earth they couldn't get better from an uncountable number of other planets without life on it? Japanese Porn?
We have nothing of value, anything they could obtain from Earth is easily obtained anywhere else in the universe, by time your species is capable of transporting soldiers across solar systems you're also going to be capable of getting anything you need from mining asteroids* or terraforming. *which are literally everywhere in space and have every material you could ever need, even materials that are rare or practically non-existent on Earth.
Lets not rule out the idea of Imperialistic Aliens wishing to integrate us.
I remember seeing a complex equation that concluded it's very likely that we are currently the only detectable form of intelligent life in our galaxy. Based on the number of stars, the amount of systems with planets that can sustain life, and the length during which a civilization can be detected from space. The final answer was an estimated amount of 0.5 civilizations or something. Ofcourse it's all rough and guesswork, but it's still kind of depressing.
I think it'd be amazing to find bacterial life, but it'd be weird to find intelligent life cause like man do we even have any sort of organized, international plan for when aliens call or are we just going to be super awkward um do you want to pick up the phone or do you want to pick up the phone probably the us wants to pick up the phone but which guy are they gonna use IDK do you know no north korea you are NOT going to be answering, put your fucking hand down
Or maybe we're the ones that will be attacking them.
The biggest fear I have is that we get off on the foot of us killing or trying to kill them when they're on a peace mission to make first contact.
The biggest fear I have is that we get off on the foot of us killing or trying to kill them when they're on a peace mission to make first contact.
It's not really that fragile of a situation. Not one we can bother ourselves worrying about at least. Plenty of great people put a lot of thought into our ET problem. It's likely the aliens will either not bother giving us a chance, for fear of some day becoming advanced enough that we may threaten them, or they treat us as a child amongst elders, wise and understanding of our nature. If anyone capable of reaching us chose to destroy us, there is NOTHING we could do to stop them, so don't fret about that. Or we don't exist at the same time as any active space-traveling organism at all. Or none outside of single cell organisms even have ever existed in our galaxy. Or ever. Anythings possible really, but hopefully we can learn a little bit more with this project. (more space funding pls, earth :c )
There's also the Rare Earth Hypothesis to consider. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rare_Earth_hypothesis
That's another issue with aliens visiting us, how would we speak to one another?
I can only imagine this being a real big problem if they don't have a sense of sound and/or sight, simple miming and pointing should be a universal thing. If they use thermal signatures or something else absurd to talk we might take a while to figure it out.
The biggest fear I have is that we get off on the foot of us killing or trying to kill them when they're on a peace mission to make first contact.
For a super advanced species they'll probably do a lot of planning beforehand. They'll definitely have passive protection of sorts, they wouldn't be so dumb as to land butt naked on a planet filled with angry bipeds wielding sulphur-powered kinetic weaponry.

Or even make contact, unless you consider the relativistic missile's impact that destroys our entire planet instantly that kind of contact. And this is why I can't watch shitty movies/shows like Independence Day or Falling Skies.
That's another issue with aliens visiting us, how would we speak to one another?
Math is the only universal thing.
Was it common sense?
Read Iceworld by Hal Clement for an awesome perspective on the differences of aliens and humans.
