Microsoft reportedly working to block apps that re-enable the Windows 8 Start button
You mean the new desktop theme which is a recolored Aero? That metro theme looks nothing like the other metro used by the Metro apps.

Tell me that isn't the Aero style in a different color. (I think it looks better than Aero, but its the same design)
And Microsoft refers to "apps which use the Metro style guide" as Metro style apps. Like in this MSDN blog post:
Reclaiming memory from Metro style apps
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/04/17/reclaiming-memory-from-metro-style-apps.aspx
And when people say Metro they're referring to the Metro environment which is separate from the desktop environment.
It looks nothing like aero.
Because it brings nothing new or useful to the desktop, its an unnecessary change.
[editline]3rd June 2012[/editline]
windows has had HTML applications since 1999, nobody uses them.
This is bullshit - while you could argue that you should be able to disable it, it's an incredible improvement for tablet users.
As Cupcakes said, the main theme is not metro. It tries to look like one but it's not metro at all. And thank god for that.

Except most windows users use windows on desktop. It's cool and all that they add support for tablets, but they force tablet UI onto desktop users hoping more apps will come out for tablet users to use.

If Aero was only transparent glass then you'd be right.
This is Metro

Except right now you're throwing standard windows desktop paradigms under aero. Which is not entirely true or factual. Obviously - aero is not just glass. But not everything in explorer is aero, it has aero design influences. Just as it had luna design influences during xp. And now it's shifting to metro design influences.

But you see no one gives a shit. Metro - references to the new start menu because that's the only part that uses metro.
I like my desktop clean so I've hidden all the icons. For years I've been running pretty much everything through the start button.
Speaking of which. The prophecy is coming full circle.

Why does everyone forget Windows 2000? It was the best one by far, the only reason I'm not still using it is because of 64 bit and directx
quotes
While I'll admit that I missed that word, that's still entirely subjective.
Why does everyone forget Windows 2000? It was the best one by far, the only reason I'm not still using it is because of 64 bit and directx
Windows 2000 was a myth. It never existed.
I had an issue with this when I realized typing at the start screen only searches apps, settings, or files depending on which you select, but not all at once, but then I realized I could just get launchy and use that instead to search them all simultaneously just like Win7's start menu, so I can pretty much ignore this and laugh at Microsoft as they take immense amounts of shit for this and try to defend themselves.

Metro = mobile
It simply doesn't belong on the desktop at all, doesn't add anything at all, its just a clean slate for Microsoft to be consistent with (LOL, like this will ever happen!)
[editline]3rd June 2012[/editline]
A tidying up and toning down of aero would have sufficed, aero is a winner, it has serious promise.

Of course it's to be consistent, but to say that it adds nothing at all is wrong. It adds some stuff, and whether you think that stuff is worth it or not, depends entirely on whether you enjoy the change - there you got it, it's subjective. And who said that the Metro design language is entirely mobile?
And even in the case that this is purely bad and made mobile devices, could it be that some sadistic fuck like me would like it? So again we're back at the fact that it's subjective, no matter how bad you think it is. You can disagree with me on whether it's better or worse, but you can't say it's not subjective. For example - I really don't like the OSX UI and the way stuff works, but I have close friends that would never use anything else.
Metro = mobile
Incorrect. Metro = a design concept and structure. If implemented correctly Metro can work for desktop environments. The Start Screen is not an incorrect implementation, but it's hardly perfect.
Apps? They are calling them apps now? Jesus, are they going to start calling computer a desk-phone now? I just want a clean empty desktop with my wallpaper and facebook, email feeds as well as hardware information and a start menu.

Good thing that's what Windows 8 offers.

The term "app" predates the iPhone by a few decades.
Quit acting like it's new and therefore bad.
[editline]5th June 2012[/editline]
Even job applications have been called "apps" forever.
Personally, I have nothing against Metro or the new start menu or anything like that. I think that it's going to be just fine. That said, I'm against this move on the principle behind it- it's our computers, Microsoft, and we should be able to do whatever the fuck we want to do with them. Don't stop us from developing whatever we want, that's a dangerous path to be taking.

it's their OS- they can remove legacy code if they want.
Which they haven't, this article is complete and utter bullshit as has been explained numerous times.
News just in windows 9 now features the taskbar. Microsoft are offering windows 8 upgrades for $300 bucks or windows 9 for $600.

Some upgrades of 7 to 8 are only $15.
Odd how people are disagreeing with me when it was announced last week.
I'm going to miss you, PC gaming, but I simply cannot put up with this PC bullshit anymore.
Hello, Macintosh. I know it's been a long time since we last spoke, but I was wondering if you'd like to go out for a coffee sometime.

Taskbar's (or superbar) going nowhere.
Watch as horrible that microshit is doing, people move on to linux and advance further into a different OS. As both major OS, Microsoft and Apple, are felling... Linux still remain stable and it's grow will benefit from the fallout of both companies. In the future, Apple and Microsoft cease to exist, as google and Nvidia uses their own OS.
Keep dreaming. Linux hasn't got neither the market share nor the mind share to really impact the market.
[editline]6th June 2012[/editline]
And why would you want google and NVIDIA to make an OS? That wouldn't make things better.
I would still be on vista if I had a copy of it, sorry guys but I miss vista, 7 is great, just something about vista makes me love it.

Sadomasochism.
If nvidia made an OS it would be a locked proprietary mess.

Lion and mountain lion is going the small app sandboxing route just as much lately...

Bot MS and Apple are growing in the desktop market. The whereas linux is shrinking and being pushed into embedded devices more and more. If you honestly expect some nix distro to get back up then you're delusional.
Their greatest moments was during the netbook era, where they offered the sweet spot on functions to performance on low end hardware. With low key laptops getting the needed battery power and performance to get over the netbook spec the OS has been on the exit route again.
