Lion and mountain lion is going the small app sandboxing route just as much lately...
Yeah but at least they're good at it.
Yeah but at least they're good at it.
If you ask me, I see MS doing a better job at the transition than OSx.
Good thing that's what Windows 8 offers.
Wait, what are we whining about?
if directx 12 is a windows 8 exclusive I'm going to cry
if directx 12 is a windows 8 exclusive I'm going to cry
There is no DX12.
There is no DX12.
Yet.
There is no DX12.
I'm aware
Watch as horrible that microshit is doing, people move on to linux and advance further into a different OS. As both major OS, Microsoft and Apple, are felling... Linux still remain stable and it's grow will benefit from the fallout of both companies. In the future, Apple and Microsoft cease to exist, as google and Nvidia uses their own OS.
Linux is always just one step away from taking over the desktop lmao
Linux is always just one step away from taking over the desktop lmao
Linux won't take over anything until its unified properly and works nicely without installing 2000 packages for a simple feature. At the moment its like a box full of shit that spills everywhere when you open it. Some people like cleaning up after it, everyone else doesnt.
From the guy using the "never combine" taskbar and refuses to upgrade my Office programs because of that god-awful ribbon UI, this unsettles me. I like using Windows because it's Windows. There's a standard and a convention in navigation and in the UI that's been that way since at least Windows 3.0, and that's the way I know and love it. I want that to remain- by forcing me to use their already shitty ribbon and taking away features that were staples to what made Windows what it was, that I'm familiar with and used to, you're forcing me to use shit I dislike. When it comes down to it, I don't like radical change in my habits. You made the conventions, if you're going to throw them out for some flashy bullshit, at least give us the option to trade in that flashy bullshit for functionality and familiarity.

Ubuntu has made a lot of strides in the areas you describe. and for as much hate that the unity interface gets, newbies take to it pretty well(and i personally don't have any issues with it).

Elementary OS too! But if you want something lightweight its a whole different story.
what is a good lightweight distro that isn't based on ubuntu
Ubuntu and Mint both do a pretty good job tidying everything up. Elementary OS too! But if you want something lightweight its a whole different story.
eh. lightweight distros are becoming more and more unnecessary for your conventional user. Computers are getting more powerful at a rate far faster than operating systems and applications(sans some very specific software which doesn't concern your conventional users) are utilizing that power. [editline]6th June 2012[/editline]
what is a good lightweight distro that isn't based on ubuntu
gento lol
Puppy Linux is okay I suppose. I keep a slitaz disk around just in case too. I don't see where all of this wasted processing power is going.
The start menu is GREAT for shortcuts. I just type 'calc', 'notepad', 'cmd', 'msconfig', etc., just like I would in the Run dialog. There's NO justification for removing the start menu when it's such a useful thing.
I think with Windows 8 you just start typing it on the desktop and these come up.

[editline]6th June 2012[/editline] and windows 95 is objectively doing less than a modern OS, so i don't see what point you're trying to make. [editline]6th June 2012[/editline]
I think with Windows 8 you just start typing it on the desktop and these come up.
not on the desktop. press the start key and start typing, just like the old menu.
I just don't understand why OS's in general keep getting more crap piled onto them instead of tidying what you already have up beforehand.
I just don't understand why OS's in general keep getting more crap piled onto them instead of tidying what you already have up beforehand.
Features are what sell an OS. Not how fast it runs. Outside of server operating systems, speed isn't as big an issue as people are always upgrading computers when theirs stops working. Servers are a lot more expensive in that department and the OS needs to use less. Every release of Windows since Vista (the last massive change) has been cleaning it up and making it run faster though. So I don't see where you're coming from with this point, you can clean up the existing stuff and add new stuff.
I just don't understand why OS's in general keep getting more crap piled onto them instead of tidying what you already have up beforehand.
ever since Windows Vista Windows has only gotten faster. Windows 8 has a far lighter footprint than Windows 7.
I just don't understand why OS's in general keep getting more crap piled onto them instead of tidying what you already have up beforehand.
Ok, if you want to run Windows 95 then go ahead. Have fun not being able to do anything modern. Thats why new features are added, so we aren't stuck doing Windows 95 things.

Just click on the little arrow and it's gone. And the option you have so far is to use Widnows 7 - that's probably the only of the two you have run so far. And I don't know why you'd say that Windows 3.0 is familiar, it doesn't look like Windows 7 or even 95:
-snip, sorry-
Or you're someone who uses alternative programs like launchy(damn I feel like adbot for repeating this so much). OR you store everything inside a desktop folder. So please don't tell that start menu is the only way to keep desktop clean(which I couldn't care less as I haven't seen it in ages).
