Why are they working so backwards?
For those who disagree, are you seriously saying 90% of the people that traipse into PC world actually know what they are doing on their facebook machine?
Wait a second. Windows Server booting into Metro? This article can't be serious, right? I'm guessing they mean the interface when you use Remote Desktop to login... I can't say Metro is something I'd want to be using to manage a server. The 'Server Manager' application in server 2008 is already overly simplified and isn't useful beyond initial setup. A metro version isn't going to help.
I like my desktop clean so I've hidden all the icons. For years I've been running pretty much everything through the start button. Speaking of which. The prophecy is coming full circle. [t]http://anongallery.org/img/4/2/windows-8.jpg[/t]
I remember a while back I was whining about not having the start menu and Panda X said you could just re-enable it in the registry. NEVER AGAIN. Also, that image above ignores Windows 2000.
I don't remember when I haven't. I rarely use my desktop for opening programs, I always just type in the application into the search bar and instantly open it.
because you can't do that in windows 8, right? oh wait you can and it's even faster
Fuck off Microsoft you dozy cunts.
You're all believing this really sensationalist title. There is still a start button you chuckle fucks
I hate pinning programs to my taskbar, it makes it look like some kind of OSX dock clusterfuck. My start menu is used for everything, and my desktop icons are disabled to keep it tidy.
Even though i have a truckload of icons on my desktop, I rarely use them. I always end up using the start menu.
What are they accomplishing by removing the start button anyway.
Convincing developers to make apps for Metro
RIP start button.
What's the point of apps on a desktop? There are already much more complex programs for anything.
I'm gonna wait for windows 9 in the year 2020
On the other hand I don't remember when I last started a program through the start button.
The start menu is GREAT for shortcuts. I just type 'calc', 'notepad', 'cmd', 'msconfig', etc., just like I would in the Run dialog. There's NO justification for removing the start menu when it's such a useful thing.
Oh HELL no. I do NOT want my computer looking like a god damn PHONE OS. I guess I better stop procrastinating and get Linux or something. Or just not update to Windows 7 and hope to god someone comes up with ways to make Windows 8 only programs run on Windows 7.
What a bunch of fucking wankers. Just like Apple, when their founder dropped out they totally lost it.
The fuck was wrong with windows 95? But yeah wasn't metro designed for their windows 7 phone OS?
You're all believing this really sensationalist title. There is still a start button you chuckle fucks
No there isn't? The start button opens Metro, chucklefuck.
If you could count the number of times I use the start button. Don't change something that works Microsoft!
bill gates would have half a penny for every time someone uses the start menu, actually no, he does have a half a penny for everytime someone does
I'm sorry but Windows 8 is going to be a commercial failure. It's designed for tablets, phones and computers, keeping all 3 in mind. So you're forcing desktop uses who don't have a touch screen into the same layout as a tablet user who has a touch screen. Not to mention that the tablet boat already sailed so Microsoft are wasting their time on that front too. Anybody with any sense isn't going to want Windows 8, there's no advantage apart from faster boot times, which can be emulated by installing Windows 7 on an SSD.

As far as I know - Metro has all the features of the start menu and then some.
What are they accomplishing by removing the start button anyway.
Making it cool and hip and simple and washed out or some shit. [editline]31st May 2012[/editline] Kinda obvious the bright designers at Microsoft are trying to copy the (already irritating) "remove everything" policy from Apple. If the base concept is already annoying, copying it won't make it any better.

Can anyone seriously give me an actual valid reason why the old start menu is better than the new one, or is everyone just angry over any change MS introduces?
Seems like we might have some defectors to Linux! Join us!
No thank you, I enjoy not having to download complicated workarounds for every two programs I download.

[editline]31st May 2012[/editline] Oh, and its ugly.
The start button will be DLC in the future..obviously.
It's a pointless change and people are used to the old start menu; not many will appreciate change.
It's not pointless. Sure, it stirs up a lot of hate as we can see in this very thread. The hate is senseless, though. The "start menu" functions just as well as the old one but with the additional feature of being able to be used on mobile devices comfortably. The only thing I don't see being justified is the presence of "Apps" on desktop devices. I wish you could just window mode them or something. Other than that, I can't see any valid arguments.
