Microsoft reportedly working to block apps that re-enable the Windows 8 Start button
it's possible to get used to it but that doesn't change the fact that
a) it's designed for touchscreens
b) we don't even have the option to opt out of Metro
It's designed for touchscreens only when you are using one.
The metro start menu is very easy to use and after a while of use I find it handier than previously
tl;dr Use w8 for a few months before giving your opinions.
What are they replacing it with?
This fullscreen prompt called "Metro UI"

wow you're great at reading I did try windows 8 and I didn't like it
I seriously can't believe you can't accept that some people just don't like it
Is everything an 'app' these days? What happened to the program? Or are they just riding the marketing buzzword wave
Apps are small programs... aka: Weather, News, Note-taking, etc... think iPad-esque. Apps are displayed on the Start Menu aka the Metro screen alongside any other installed program. These apps can also display info ON their tile (newest emails, what the temperature is outside, tweats, etc).
Programs are also on the Start menu, but don't display "live" information on their tile.
Both Programs, and Apps are available in the Windows Store. However, only Apps will auto-update.
Seems like we might have some defectors to Linux! Join us!
Switched to Linux (Slackware FTW!) 10+ years ago as my primary workstation(s) OS; I have never looked back! I wish others could learn that you can have the power of choice and at no cost except personal drive to learn something new. I consider Mac users the lazy ones who just buy into simplicity.
Yes, I do have Windows but only in a gaming role.
It looks like I'll be sticking with 7 for a while. This generation of windows will set an all time low.
I might come out as really offensive but why won't you people try windows 8 before hating on it?
Use it for a longer period such as a few months or so and give your opinion on it afterwards..
IF the initial impression of using it is bad, well then you've flopped.
First impression is EVERYTHING and I get a bad one every time I try windows 8
I'll be honest, I dislike all this "Easy Access" things companies are doing these days. But I HATE them forcing it on us. Not every person on the face of this planet is so stupid they don't know how to operate a computer.
This whole deal about not having the option for the old start menu.
Forcing updates on people, without an option to "Not update". (Which Win8 might do but hasn't yet.)
And more but I'd rather not have a whole post be a list of "Things companies have done to fuck over professional users and assist new users"
I wish companies would just do what a lot of programs have done. A simple "Professional" mode at the click of a button.

First impression isn't everything. You may find a game that looks great and turns out to be shit, or one that looks shit and turns out to be great. You never know.
Ever heard of "you can't judge a book by its cover"?
It looks like I'll be sticking with 7 for a while. This generation of windows will set an all time low.
Why? You don't want new features because you dislike the Start screen?

You don't have to cut your leg off to know that it's a bad idea.

True, but you can't really judge metro by looking at it.

That is the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen on a desktop.

What? Why would you NOT want Updates?
What is wrong with the new Start menu? What makes the old start menu superior?

Boom. Thank you.
Anyone who programs or does other professional things knows that the workflow in Windows leaves a lot to be desired. I'm a Linux power user, but they don't have a lot of programs that work for me. So I hackintosh, and I still have access to programming environments, Photoshop, you name it. And OS X has a lot more features for professionals and power users. Desktops, shortcuts, you name it.
All Microsoft is doing with this is making Windows less appealing for power users and professionals. With the new VS being trash, and forcing a menu on us.
Welp, Windows 7 for a few more years it is then.
That is the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen on a desktop.
That's because it's the Start menu.
That is the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen on a desktop.
because it's filled with the default bullshit apps and looks like a clusterfuck of colours and ads
you can remove and add things yourself
That is the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen on a desktop.
While I agree with you, I have seen worse. But to be honest. Before 2010, if I saw this on a computer screen. I would've vomited. Now-a-days, I'm not surprised.
True, but you can't really judge metro by looking at it.
I tried it on a friend's computer a while ago. It really doesn't go well with a desktop PC. It's just so much wasted space and pointless bubbly graphics as if it's designed for people with poor eyesight or the mentally challenged.
True, but you can't really judge metro by looking at it.
Maybe not in terms of functionality, but in terms of design you can tell in an instant whether or not you like it. Metro works great on the Win7 phones because really it's designed as a touchscreen interface. But when it comes to mouse/keyboard, it's one of the most unintuitive and needlessly bloated interfaces I have ever seen.
Boom. Thank you.

No, let me thank YOU. You make a great point to compliment mine about this new OS screwing us professional users over.

Oh boy, you had to mention the new VS.
They've changed the way it looks since the earlier versions of it.
It doesn't look that bad anymore and it has new features.
What's the problem?

There was nothing wrong with VS 2010, everything was perfect there.
screwing us professional users over.
it's just like windows 7 except the start menu looks different and the OS works faster because it has to work well on mobile devices
that's it
looks different
that's all it is
the start menu looking different and OS being faster fucks you over?

The Express version can only develop Metro apps and they changed the UI because "why not."
Boom. Thank you.

The new VS being trash? Have you used the new VS? It's about 20x faster, loads 500+ file projects instantly, in-line intellisense, C++ AMP, and automatic code snippet generation.

What's the problem? Professional users have gotten used to a certain feel of a computer screen. Completely and utterly changing that ruins any sort of work flow a professional user would have with the new OS. Another problem is that every company will follow in line with the new OS. Including things professional users have to use. So for us professionals, it's either stay behind in Windows 7, and be comfortable and happy. Or update, and mentally scream in horror as our normal work flow is torn apart.
Edit:
Hm, VS, VS? Two meanings. Visual Studio, and Visual Style. I assumed Style.
