about a minute for win7? did you install that on legacy hardware? it's around 20 seconds on my 5400RPM laptop drive
Depends. My laptop is doing around a minute as well. I'm not saying your laptop's bullshit, but from my experience the general population is looking at ~40s or thereabouts.

Here's Microsoft's boot data: http://blogs.msdn.com/cfs-filesystemfile.ashx/__key/communityserver-blogs-components-weblogfiles/00-00-01-29-43-metablogapi/8081.Comparing_2D00_boot_2D00_times_2D00_from_2D00_Windows_2D00_7_2D00_and_2D00_Windows_2D00_8_5F00_0E1B8E82.jpg
This is clean installations.
If they don't bring it back, I'll just upgrade to 7 and stay there.
Removing the menu button makes Windows less intuitive for people who are newer to computers. The general direction of the new OS feels like a mistake in general because it's such a large change. It won't appeal to most businesses or schools, etc. Yeah the tablet market has potential to be a large consumer base, but they're basically abandoning their old ones by distributing Windows 8 as part of the main Windows line.
It seems as though the idea is to have a good OS, follow it with a completely radical one, take what was popular about the radical one (if anything) and make a new OS, and to repeat. A good example of this behavior can be seen with some bands, e.g. Lamb of God (Release a radical album, followed by one which is more in line with what fans expect). A benefit of this strategy is that you get people upset, then when you go back to a less radical product they hurry back, excited things can be how they used to be.
I wonder if win9 will have start button
Fucking stupid. One more reason not to buy Windows 8. It's like they're purposely trying to create another Vista
This is such an unintelligent post, my god the ignorance
Please don't make money off of it, please don't make money off of it, please don't make money off of it...
I like my desktop clean so I've hidden all the icons. For years I've been running pretty much everything through the start button.
Speaking of which. The prophecy is coming full circle.

Welcome to this thread. May I take your coat?

It was a complete and utter train wreck on day one.
I wonder if win9 will have start button
Ah well for Windows 9, they're replacing the whole operating system with a series of European pastries, so the start button will be a Danish.
It was a complete and utter train wreck on day one.
it also didn't upgrade enough considering the lost time from Longhorn being delayed
That is the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen on a desktop.
I honestly can't understand the "flat UI" trend... it makes more sense on smartphones (tiny screens, more readable), but on huge desktop screens?
The Metro UI would already feel much better if it was Aero'd up instead of being all flat saturated colors
Why does Microsoft fuck up Windows 8 so much? I only hear negative shit about it.
They could at least change the extremely boring logo

apparently they rolled back to the previous one.. this is in the windows 8 webpage.
how was windows 95 shit, holy fuck
some people still nowadays have the notion that win 95 was shit because they started to push the mouse strongly and was the main input device for the OS. Also, it was quite different than 3.1 in OS terms..
Plus where in that image is windows 2000?

I believe you'll be seeing that for a short time, but I don't like the new logo and maybe microsoft is reconsidering the change.
Because the flags are well known by everyone, you print off the windows xp, vista or 7 logo and everyone will say "windows", print off windows 8's logo and nobody will understand what the fuck it is.
Ah, well that small change already looks a lot better (Though some color would not hurt)
Also, I did try out the windows 8 CP on my desktop. As I did enjoy it, nothing beats it on a touch device. So I will be getting windows 8 IF I have a touch device, I don't think a desktop will work well with it and a non-touch laptop will either.
Critics will completely destroy this with desktop reviews, Microsoft will come out later explaining why and nobody will listen. Removing the start button with the logo is a horrible thing, we've grown up with it since 95, why get rid of it in 8? Why not just have it there for desktop users and it opens up fucking metro.
Why.

I find that very unlikely.
Just watched the video on their Windows 8 page, and they use the flat logo. A bit weird that they use a different logo in another place, but as said - I find it unlikely that they rolled back.

Is it that hard to check?

They probably made the video before they rolled it back. They aren't going to remake the whole video.

It's not a small decision to change the logo so radically, and then just brush it off. They made a whole blog post about designing it, and I only see it on that webpage, no other places. I want more proof before I accept changes like that.

Actually, it sort of does make sense. Every corner on the desktop is really a "hot corner" at this point - one for multitasking, one for the charms, and one for minimizing everything (albeit only in desktop mode) - following an idea of consistency, it does make sense that the start button (which isn't a button anymore) is also a hot corner, even though it might not be all that nice.
People are going to use Windows 7 for desktops instead of Metro until they create something good again. This pattern of good/bad software is so consistent, I feel like they're doing it to manipulate stock or something.

Microsoft's stock is and has always been shit.

Probably to make Windows 9 look like the savior of desktop computing or something.

Windows 2000 says that your pattern is bullshit.
There is no fucking pattern.
Actually, Windows 2000(Feb 2000), Windows Me(Sept 2000), Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7.
If that's not a pattern then I don't know what is.

You forgot the fact that Windows XP was considered shit until Service Pack 2.
Yep, Microsoft is clearly determined to spit in the face of every single Windows fan.
We don't want our computers dumbed down into oversized phones, you fucking idiots.

It's not like you'll be spending much time in the Metro environment, and in all other uses than a part of the UI, I'd say comparing this to a phone OS is completely ludicrous.
