Steam's coming to Linux. Maybe it's a good time to switch?
Steam's coming to Linux. Maybe it's a good time to switch?
Nope. Most games on Steam still won't run. And for most people, they own more games that won't run than games that will.
If all my games worked on Linux I would've switched years ago. To be honest that's about the only reason I use Windows.
Early Vista: I would give Microsoft all my money if they did something like this instead.
what do you mean "if Microsoft has their way". literally nothing is stopping you from using the desktop environment and yeah the start button takes you into the metro interface because that's the start menu
Lazor nailed it If some of the morons here actually installed the release preview on a PC of theirs, they'd see it's a nice step up for windows 7. The only thing that will be noticeable foreign to them is when they open the start menu (the same way you open it in Windows 7, the Windows key on your keyboard or click bottom left) then you'll notice the start menu is full screen and more colorful It's this small and less important changes (there are lots of improvements, god Windows 7 feels crappy with out them) in Windows 8 that all the shitheads take notice of, and not any of the other stuff
I read the title as "Microsoft reportedly working on Black Ops solely for windows 8 task bar" :v:
Steam's coming to Linux. Maybe it's a good time to switch?
most of the games I love and cherish the devs wouldn't even dream of porting them to Mac OSX, let alone Linux no
Sticking with 7, Windows 8 looks really bad imo. I would stick to XP if most games suddenly doesn't run on it anymore.
Metro improved with the mouse and keyboard quite a bit in the release preview but the start menu is still better. My previous screenshot of trying to put everything that is on my 7 menu onto the Metro screen still the same problems stand in the release preview. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/5273861/startvsmetro.jpg So much wasted screen space and it's full screen yet it's showing me less than the 7 menu.
most of the games I love and cherish the devs wouldn't even dream of porting them to Mac OSX, let alone Linux no
That's what wine is for.
That's what wine is for.
Wine isn't really at a stage that you can expect things to work right yet for everything. Speaking of Linux... Canonical tried Unity which is about as shitty as Metro and they lost the #1 spot because of it.

The search bar (so much faster than clicking all programs and all that bullshit), Computer, and Shut Down. Windows 8 has all of those so no issues with me.
..then cut the last line. I don't know about you, but generally I'd try out things before complaining about them. I'm not saying you're stupid, but I think this is the way a lot of people think, and it's not really the way to adapt to new things. Try it out before judging. And don't do it in virtual box. And don't just uninstall the same day, it takes some time.
I would try it, but I just bought windows 7 pro, and I'm not going to replace it any time soon. Also I don't know how to install the preview and not lose my W7.

It won't perform as good in a virtual machine but it's good way to give it a try if you don't want to install it.
I can confirm that ViStart, Start8, and Classic Shell work in the RC despite all this nonsense going around. So yeah, it was probably just that legacy code or maybe Thurrott's system messed up.
I liked that Start button that was in Windows 8 Dev Preview. It looks like what should've been the logo.
I will not be purchasing Windows 8 if they continue with this Metro bullshit. I hate Windows Mobile devices for the EXACT same reason. Metro is, IMO, terrible and ugly.
Wait a second. In the end they didn't drop Aero (at least partly) from the RP?
Wait a second. In the end they didn't drop Aero (at least partly) from the RP?
No that new theme won't be avail until the release. I imagine it wasn't quite ready at the time.

Because if we must compare, I'm rather glad we're finally moving out from the cheesy poor looking glass effects of Aero. Metro, when applied correctly, can provide extremely good looking designs, in all formats and through any media. these are some pretty good examples: [thumb]http://catalog.zune.net/v3.2/en-US/image/9809de4b-7b89-43eb-82f1-d1fcd43e2bfe?width=1280&height=720&resize=true[/thumb]
I have to agree, I really like Metro. I'm a fan of simplicity (although in this case they might be favoring simplicity over... simplicity)
Gotta open the charms menu and press settings for that as far as I can tell.
Not really hard to get to though.

From what I've seen of the new Desktop theme replacing Aero, it's a huge improvement. What people have an issue with is the Metro environment and applications. Like making the start menu full screen. And there are all kinds of design inconsistencies, like there are two different task bars in Windows 8. One for Metro apps, and one for non-Metro apps. There's all kinds of bullshit like that. Metro apps would be good for phones or tablets, but they fail for desktop users. And metro apps really dropped the ball for multi monitor users (Metro apps only work on the primary screen, they will never run on a secondary screen)
Why.
Just.. Why? Seriously. Are they seriously that idiotic that they fail to understand that we DON'T want the start button removed?
But not having a start button is EDGY
something actually tells me some of you will keep saying metro is shit buy w8 and secretly love it I know you facepunch, you can't trick me
That's it. I'm stocking up on Windows 7 copies before they start banning them in some way.
I like metro when applied to touch screens, it looks more enjoyable when you get to touch it instead of clicking about.
