What we REALLY need is a firearm that can accept all forms of 7.62mm rounds. .308, x39, x54, x63...
What is the point? It would be unnecessarily complex from a mechanical standpoint.
What is the point? It would be unnecessarily complex from a mechanical standpoint.
the point is that is you can use a wide variety of rounds without changing a single part of the weapon
All the rounds I listed are of the same width. The only part that would need any kind of 'adaptation' is the width. A .308 and a 30-06 are the same width, for example. They just have different lengths.
Err, not really. You said all 7.62mm rounds. The thing is, not all 7.62mm rounds have the same dimensions/measurements. There's slight differences. For example, the bullet diameter on a 7.62x39 is actually 7.92mm. Then of course, they all have different case lengths. But also, they have different pressures etc. Yeah, not gonna happen.
Or you could standardise ammunition instead.
Never gonna happen.
In truth they should just use the XCR and be done with it. Want 7.62x39? Barrel swap and you are done. Want 5.56? Barrel swap. Done. Want 6.8 SPC? barrel swap. Done. All the accuracy of the AR-15 platform and most of the reliability from the kalashnikov type rifles. (Just make sure you know what gas setting you want for what ammo you are putting down range BEFOREHAND.) I own one. Best goddamn rifle I've ever had. The only complaint I can possibly come up with is that it is a little heavy on the front end. And that is easy to fix.
Fuck yeah, I have one too, except only in semi auto because of gun laws high five
No it isn't. The gas system is completely different. This has been proven to improve the reliability, which is a welcome change when some troops are getting jams every 3 or 4 shots.
They fucking deserve it cause they don't clean their rifles. AR-15 is a great platform. It does its work when you maintain it once in a while.
You guys know way too much about weapons.
I found the Russian underwater rifle and pistol from the same site much more interesting. http://kitup.military.com/2010/06/russian-frogman-assault-rifle.html Shooting your divers full of gunpowder darts since the Cold War.

Even if a soldier does take good care of his rifle, it has far too many stoppages. Even one stoppage per magazine can get you killed. One stoppage in an entire firefight can get you killed.
