So why did he do something as childish as pissing on a dead body?
I can't be accountable for some Marines' actions, do not try to hold me so. He most likely did it as a spur of the moment final "Fuck You" to the dead Taliban. I can understand why he did it, but what he did was very unprofessional, and the Marines really should have shown restraint.
Well, you killed the guy, that's okay. Just don't pee on him, that would be disrespectful.
The geneva conventions weren't made to object to war, that's a different issue entirely. They were made to make sure that warfare is conducted ethically, since you already deem it necessary if you're going to war. If you're raising that issue, you're missing the fucking point entirely.

He had disgusting intentions, it wasn't "stress relief" nor was it "in the heat of the moment" - it was a calculated terrible move on his part.
You realize we give everyone who commits a crime a full sentence, and then a wound on their record? This man is missing the 'full sentence' bit. He is only getting a dash on his record.
I don't think you get it. This is not just a dash. His career is completely over, his life even. Military prosecution will follow you for the rest of your entire life. This 30 day sentence might as well mean a life one. He is sentenced to pretty much never getting another job again.

You don't just go one day "You know what, today I am going to kill some Taliban and piss on their bodies." You kill some Taliban, go up to their bodies and go "Check it out man get a picture of this shit." That it happened is disgusting, but you don't just premeditate that shit.

No one with a criminal record ever gets another job unless they are working for dirt. His career must end if our military is to be shown as moral. We can't have someone who desecrates corpses, poses for a photo, and then uploads it all in this 'spur of the moment' as you call it. It's unprofessional, it's degrading to every other honest serviceman, and it's downright fucking stupid. He had ample time to think about whether or not this was a good idea. Don't try to play it off as if he is the victim. His life would've been over, according to you, with a 5 day sentence, and so what is a few more months?
You're thinking of a dishonorable discharge (equivalent to a felony) - a 30 day jail sentence is not going to mean jack shit.
30 day sentence stemming from a military court martial and a demotion. That shit WILL follow you forever. Huge stigma behind that.
Poor Taliban. Let us take a moment of silence
If it's the first time he's ever been caught doing something like this, then a lighter sentence seems pretty typical. I would agree with a heftier sentence if this was some sort of repeat offence, but no matter what your career is, you won't have the book thrown at you if you don't have a history.
DEATH SENTENCE. THAT'D SHOW THE FUCKER.

What he did is morally reprehensible and against the laws of war. Also, I get completely how it works in the US seeing as how I am a Soldier of the United States Army, currently deployed in support of OEF. I know how the UCMJ works. He did something wrong, and is getting punished for it, and will have that stuff following him forever. His action reflected extremely poorly on our integrity, and is getting just desserts. Wishing for a longer sentence won't change any of that, however.

I'm not wishing for anything except that the law be enforced equally upon all patrons.
You realize that military personnel put up a front, right? Their facial expression does not necessarily betray their emotional or mental state. 30 days may seem light to a civilian, but what happened to him essentially amounted to a cashiering. His career is over, and he will be shunned wherever he is in the military, and being demoted is kind of a huge deal, especially for a SSgt.
He shouldn't be desecrating bodies then.
I think the fuss caused by this so far would be enough to convince me not to do it again. Can anyone remind me what prison is for?
So then explain the reasoning that since his life is essentially over, a 30 day sentence is too little.
Jesus christ, he's going to prison for a month, his life is not over.
That's like a sentence for possession of marijuana.
I don't know if there's a specific, written rule for this, but you're basically judging their sentence purely on morals. I don't think that's as simple.
Except that it was spur of the moment. You don't just go one day "You know what, today I am going to kill some Taliban and piss on their bodies." How could you know?
but you don't just premeditate that shit.
Yeah you do. [editline]20th December 2012[/editline]
What? How could you know?
SKEEA thinks because he's been in a non-combative military position for like a few months he's now an expert on soldier mentality.
The geneva conventions weren't made to object to war, that's a different issue entirely. They were made to make sure that warfare is conducted ethically, since you already deem it necessary if you're going to war. If you're raising that issue, you're missing the fucking point entirely.
Yeah but my point is from an objective, outsider's viewpoint, it seems that once you're killing people en masse, it's kind of hard to get mad about...peeing on them.
Yeah but my point is from an objective, outsider's viewpoint, it seems that once you're killing people en masse, it's kind of hard to top that by...peeing on them.
In that case, what's wrong with using white phosphorus? I mean, they'll be dead anyway, who cares, right? Nope.
Jesus christ, he's going to prison for a month, his life is not over.
It essentially is. ANY length of prison time is a huge stigma in the US, especially for military personnel. That stuff will follow him forever, and will most likely never be hired again.
That's a good sentence. They are servicemen, they can't piss on corpses even if the corpse tried to kill him and his mates. And I hope this conviction doesn't totally ruin whatever it is that he was planning.
It essentially is. ANY length of prison time is a huge stigma in the US, especially for military personnel. That stuff will follow him forever, and will most likely never be hired again.
Again, the same for any crime committed in the US, regardless of your position. Why is this man so special so as to receive a lighter sentence than anyone else?
Yeah you do. [editline]20th December 2012[/editline] SKEEA thinks because he's been in a non-combative military position for like a few months he's now an expert on soldier mentality.
And you think that being an EMT somehow makes you morally superior to everyone. Thing is, you can't count on contact from the Taliban. It is intermittent. Military guys do dumb shit on the fly, it is really hard to premeditate what he did.
It essentially is. ANY length of prison time is a huge stigma in the US, especially for military personnel. That stuff will follow him forever, and will most likely never be hired again.
Highly doubtful, many jobs don't really give a shit about prison sentences, they just need to know it doesn't effect your work.
Again, the same for any crime committed in the US, regardless of your position. Why is this man so special so as to receive a lighter sentence than anyone else?
He legally got a plea agreement. You can argue for a heavier sentence, but in the end he got a plea agreement and there is NOTHING you can do about it.
