You know for an all powerful omnipotent and omniscient being god sure does go about things in a really weird way.
It's like The Sims. You can put on cheats and spawn water you want, or make your guy get it normally. God apparently plays without cheats most of the time.
That's not the fault of religion. People will always search and find something to use as an excuse for agression.
Most religions state that even if you don't believe in god and follow the active church, doing your own way and following your own good conscience is already living in the way that a god would want us to live.
The church is more of a guidance for those who have trouble than a spiritoual tax everyone has to pay.
At least that's what a protestant priest told me.
I'm not religious by the way. Or at least I try not to be. Of course sometimes you get thoughts about it because it makes things easier.
Why do you think the WBC does it? They are getting brownie points from god for doing his bidding that he is too petty to do himself.
Ignorance is bliss. I just with that we could just cast away this fighting over who is right and worry about more important things. Not kill each other over what the other believes.
If you think about it, there's nothing really wrong with religion itself, it doesn't want people to murder, it's just the literally insane people that make it bad, and really, if they didn't have religion they would still do bad things, they just have the name behind their actions. A way to fix all the fighting and death is to fix insanity in human-beings, but...you can't really do that, can you?
It's HOW YOU INTERPRET IT. Why is that so hard for you to understand?
No I honestly don't understand. If you pray, and then you interpret from and endless list of possible outcomes the one that you think is gods answer, you are making the decision and receving your own determined answer, not god.

...Uh, yes it does. It preaches so, depending on the religion. Many religions contain literally volumes of work that tell you to hate specific groups.
Placebo effects aren't all positive.
Well actually, they are, since Placebo means a positive change, while nocebo is the negative.
A couple prayed for their childs sickness, a fatal one, to go away rather than take him to the doctor. Yeah, that's not harmful at all.
I think you missunderstand that.
Look at the calvinist movement in the 16th century. They saw wealth and fame as symbols for the love of god.
One who gained respect and money by working hard was loved by god in their eyes.
Working hard was their way of honouring him.
And it's probably like that with prayers.
Most rekigious people aren't stupid like that.
For this example, they would bring their sick child to the doctor. Of course they know the doctor is doing everything he can. So they pray to god to well, help the doctor. Make the operation successfull by no letting any complications happen or take away the pain of the child.
Stuff like that.
...Uh, yes it does. It preaches so, depending on the religion. Many religions contain literally volumes of work that tell you to hate specific groups.
Some do, some don't, and still, hating and murdering are different, and only insane people would murder someone over them being gay, or black, or something.

These people do it based on their religious text. Every major religion states that it is the real one and believing any other is a ticked to torture for all time. People then get violent, because they want their religion at the top, so they can get paradise. These people are bad, but casting out religion as a whole would help more than arguing who is right.

Those are man made. The core of those religions are not that precise. They are stll open for interpretation. And if you think about it, it's people who deny this possibility of interpretation who are dangerous, not religious people trying to find a way through life.

I think you are very generalizing and ignorant towards religions here.

We can't so there's no point in even arguing.

That's kind of ironic, considering what the church did back in the middle ages.

Religion teaches people to do horrible things. It DOES want people to murder. Modern religions have obviously abandoned those tenants, but groups of religions (someone mentioned WBC) that follow those same hateful messages exist. Murder isn't the be all and end all of moral preaching either, the Catholic church condemns condoms (wow alliteration) for fucks sake.

That was a time of intolerance, now's a time of tolerance, at least more so than the middle ages.
Ah, shite.
I hope Dawkins is right about the "Closet-Atheists".

I'm not saying that all people do it, i'm saying that enough do it to be a problem. Maybe living in gay-non-white-non-Christian bashing land has taken a toll on my perception of religion, I dunno.

Not even that many people do it to be a problem, you just hear about it a lot because it's interesting news.
He does. My aunt took me shopping with her, I prayed that the store would be closed, and guess what? It was.
Dear god: let my next shit be solid and not extremely messy.
Spoiler Alert:[sp] I had chili for dinner so it really would be a miracle.[/sp]
I will follow up on this (With pictures?)

Isn't the pope insane for condemning the use of condoms? People who condemn homosexuality for their religion are insane then. All you are saying is that everyone who calls themself religious and does bad things is insane and not representative of religion. You are removing all the immoral creeds that religion has implaced on society and criticising people for not realising how bad they are. People who act with good intentions are least likely to resemble to teachings of religion then.

I'm saying that religion doesn't make them do bad things, they're just plain crazy already.
I'm saying that religion doesn't make them do bad things, they're just plain crazy already.
So you're saying only follow the morals you choose from a religion?
uhhhh first of all 1000 is a really small population to survey for a question like this and second they didn't take into account location... there are some places in the states that are heavily religious and some where most people couldn't give a fuck about god
so I declare this poll to be bullshit

This is true.
What?
Don't follow things that say to hate, but only things that say to love and help?
I'm saying that religion doesn't make them do bad things, they're just plain crazy already.
But their actions are motivated by religion! You're defining insanity as religion. If you honestly and sincerely believe you are doing the work of the almighty powerful creator of the universe, and you would be rewarded forever, wouldn't you do it? Their insanity IS their religion.
