If you give a burglar a key to your house because at first glance he seems like an alright guy, is it not partially your fault?
If someone came to my home disguised as a representative from my local cable company, oil distributor, or plumber, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to let them into my home and leave them unattended in whatever rooms they would be working in. Comparing this to just giving someone a key is a little misrepresentative. By extension it's pretty unfair to blame the victims. I mean when we call various call centers around the country we're totally used to giving, for instance, our credit card information, our addresses, etc. I used to work at a call center and handled people's data all the time. There's a constant flux back and forth regarding personal information especially in the electronic information age that we live in. [editline]16th March 2016[/editline] just remember we don't fault people who have been defrauded because, you know, they are illegally tricked into thinking that they're dealing with someone or something that isn't what it claims to be
No I'm pretty sure the person who gained access to their accounts and leaked their nude pictures is to blame.
People are responsible for their account's, both are equally to blame. He shouldn't con people an they should've known better to not type their passwords into possibly fake emails.
If you give a burglar a key to your house because at first glance he seems like an alright guy, is it not partially your fault?
honestly, it's not illegal to be a chump and the rest of it really is a lot so
The term is a mixture of two words, 'the happening', as in what's going on, and 'fapping', which is slang for masturbation.
That doesnt sound right. Wasn't it a play on words of something else?
That doesnt sound right. Wasn't it a play on words of something else?
nah that's pretty much what it means to me
So the celebrities actually are to some blame for this, huh
That's a pretty shitty way of looking at it. They had their right to privacy breached by someone and had their lives damaged by the leak no matter how you look at it, and you're going to place the blame on them for accidentally following through with a phishing attempt? Fucked up
That's a pretty shitty way of looking at it. Fucked up
They deserve blame as they fell for it. When all apple and such always scream we will not request your password ever. None of the lives really got more than minor damaged. If that's really an issue they should be fighting against those who look down upon them having a sex life. At the end of the day you are responsible for the protection of your accounts and privacy. If you did something dumb that doesn't mean you lose responsibility. Think someone gave someone who has never shot a gun before. Now it's an assault rifle so they hold it aim it, FIRE. Followed by a whole clip being empty and two other people getting hit with bullets. The person who gave them the gun is responsible and so is the person who shot it. Which is to say no matter what it is if it's security for your accounts or doing something dangerous you are responsible for it. If you don't want to learn the basics of security on technology and fall to being incompetent that is your responsibility. Don't want to learn how to use a gun safely and be incompetent it is your responsibility. No matter how you look at it they have fault in it if phishing was how they got it. Now if someone just out right hacked in then no fault on there side. TL:DR Bad things happen and if you are part of the cause you are at fault as well.
Who cares if they're at fault for being fooled by the phishing attempt? You know what the punishment is for being dumb enough to fall for a phishing attempt? The consequences of falling for the phishing attempt. Stupidity award won, that doesn't in any way absolve the person(s) sending phishing emails or trying to commit fraud. The only way this argument is even worth having is if someone's trying to blame apple (or other service providers) for the leaks.
The only way this argument is even worth having is if someone's trying to blame apple (or other service providers) for the leaks.
People were doing that, though. At least when this whole thing happened. Of course the guy who broke in has most of the blame, but he couldn't have done it without the cooperation of the victims. Most companies explicitly tell you that they will never ask you for your account credentials via email. I assume Apple does the same.

Not every celebrity is like you and has time to spend all day on the computer playing games, where they would then slowly learn what a phishing is.
Email as a whole is extremely dated and insecure, and yet we use it as a security check for countless things. By the time self driving cars are common we'll probably still be using it, because the majority of people just don't understand how terrible it is.

I hate phishing and stuff like that just as much as anyone else, I don't think they're stupid, They were targetted. They should've known better but they didn't, they suffered the consequences and now we can move on and stop acting like they're at fault for it. I'm not saying that they deserved what happened, I'm saying that it's simply the consequence of falling for it.
LMAO The way he leaked their info is fucking priceless.
more comparable to a burglar dressing up as a real estate agent or something and presenting fake documents before requesting your house key
No it's more like someone coming up to your door in a generic jumpsuit with no official labeling, saying "Hello I am here from the... electricity company, give me your house keys" and then you doing it [editline]17th March 2016[/editline]
Why are people like you treating celebrities as so woefully stupid for falling for a spoofed email-address that originated from a legitimate domain?
No it's more like someone coming up to your door in a generic jumpsuit with no official labeling, saying "Hello I am here from the... electricity company, give me your house keys" and then you doing it
Honestly, people can make some really convincing phishing attempts, until I see the emails myself I'd have to reserve judgement on how legit it seemed.
Dude you have 0 ground to throw shade when you're a moderator on a video game forum like really what ground do you have to stand on to make fun of someone for something like that
Also there's no need to make this a road of discussion, fighting ad hominem with ad hominem is pointless, and legitimizes it for no reason. It's not like my feelings were hurt based on the assumptions of someone who knows literally nothing about me other than some of the unpopular opinions I post on a forum I frequent. And to be fair he wasn't far off the mark.

Most modern hacking is a result of social engineering. :sci101:
Why are people like you treating celebrities as so woefully stupid for falling for a spoofed email-address that originated from a legitimate domain?
but boobs tho Either way I think it's both sides fault.
Naw its really not the victim's fault. Also the massive influx of people trying to get those images was pretty appalling. I don't know why people obsess over celebrities like that and I don't know why people can't respect each others privacy.
The victim is in fault of being gullible, but that's it. It's the perp's fault for abusing this to score private data and photos and then leak it to the public. So no, it's not the celebs fault no matter how dumb they are.
As if celebrities are technology versed. A good phishing email is not hard to put together.
idk I imagine some of them are? I don't see why "celebrities" would be less familiar with technology than the average person within the same age group.

Of fucking course he went to JMU. JMU is trash

The guy is at fault, yes, thats obvious, but don't pass them out as completely fault free. Also, this is why secret questions and answers were invented.
Who the fuck would owe up to that after almost 2 years after the event? I call bullshit.
2 years. oh god
I don't think you understand how dangerous properly done social engineering is.
Just because celebrities got scammed? You could make a 110% fool proof plan, and even someone witth the basic knowledge that you just don't give out your credentials to anyone (because, ahem, you wouldn't need to in the first place lol) would see that its a scam.
