Naw just kidding, I love Mojang and frankly this whole Scrolls business is hilarious.
Yeah, you guys are idiots. Todd Howard and Notch are actually friends. Its not like Todd Howard came down from his office one day and said "Lets sue notch for a bunch of money" Its their fucking lawyers.
Uhh, guys, this isn't some abstract software patent, it's a trademark. A trademark holder has to go after anyone that might be infringing on it to hold onto their right to the trademark. Unfortunately Bethesda Legal have seen Scrolls as being one of the infringing properties and are therefore forced to go after Notch in order not set precedent as to loose the trademark "The Elder Scrolls" in the future
Can people stop thinking this has anything to do with the developer Bethesda? Jesus, i thought everyone knew they were separate entities by now.
I like how the only report on this is from Notch himself. I'm still waiting for a gaming news article or something before I decide anything. It amazes me all the blind hatred/blind Notch defending going on in this thread.
I have hatred toward lawyers in general, do I count?
Seriously if you're forming an extreme opinion like "FUCK BEthesda and their skyrim I dont need no skyrim" because of a biased source like this, I fear for your adulthood. [editline]asd[/editline] I mean, look at the terraria hullabaloo, and see how that turned out
I have hatred toward lawyers in general, do I count?
Even then, I'm pretty sure a lawyer would need a CEO or someone similar's approval before they go off and start suing people. It's the lawyers fault is not an excuse, but yes it is probably 90% the lawyers. Go ask anyone about the "Srolls" games, they'll ask what you're talking about. I seriously doubt this could go through court in favor of Bethesda.
So you are not going to buy a game because of the actions of a completely separate branch of the company are being douchey. Completely rational.
So you think I don't buy it because of this? Wrong. You assume I do, for some reason. I won't buy it because my PC won't be able to run it, and it's not worth it on a console.
What happened with terraria?
Popularity died it seems. Although still on the best selling list.
What happened with terraria?
Everyone found out that one of the guys on the team was a giant dick, everyone said they would never get the game and it looked like the end of the world for it. Then half of those people went to get the game when it went on a 10% sale
So you think I don't buy it because of this? Wrong. You assume I do, for some reason. I won't buy it because my PC won't be able to run it, and it's not worth it on a console.
Then why bring it up in the thread at all.
Huirr durr Bethesda should win because I hate Minecraft/I'm pissy doesn't do secret Friday updates anymore.
Then why bring it up in the thread at all.
Because this certainly influenced my decisions. I would've bought it otherwise for the xbox, though.
Because this certainly influenced my decisions. I would've bought it otherwise for the xbox, though.
Well it makes you look like one of the un-informed people who won't buy Skyrim because of this one fuck-up that isn't even the developers fault. You have different (and actually valid) reasons entirely. Like I said, why bring it up.
I'm never buying something from a lawyer again. BOYCOTT LAWYERS!!!
The problem is a lot of the time companies hire a lawyer to be the head of their legal division. The lawyer's still a lawyer, he just directs other lawyers to make money. So it's still a lawyer move.
Except the legal division acts under certain specifics. Obviously a large part of the legal division is composed of lawyers (or is completely outsourced in the end). But copyright disputes usually pass past the CEO or boards of directors in some form or another. As to making money - Bethesda is a public company. Their only purpose essentially is to make money. That's why they exist. They don't have any obligations except legal ones towards the country they are incorporated in and their shareholders.
God damn the amount of knee jerking in the first 2-3 pages of this thread is shameful. Also, just wanted to make sure this was seen.
Uhh, guys, this isn't some abstract software patent, it's a trademark. The rapid Notch defense that sprouts up every time something like this happens is ridiculous.
Um To be honest, if I didn't know what either of those games were, I would think they're related, but I think Bethesda could just ask for a name change or something instead of acting like a bunch of dicks
I'm going to trademark.. quarks!
But then you would make this guy's life hell, which isn't cool.
Trademarking is a starters worst nightmare. Sure He has some money, but not that kind of money. If you trademark something without being able to defend it, it's a useless trademark. Just makes it easier for the big boys to obtain trademarks.
The letter in english (Translated myself, not shitty google translate, not including the "headline")
I'm writing to you in property of the company ZeniMax Media Inc. My headchief (This letter has probably been translated by ZeniMax/Bethesda because the grammar/words are hilariously put) creates and publishes interactive entertainment content for TV gameconsoles (Aka consoles), computers and handheld/wireless units. The company has a long and successful history and is behind several award winning games, one of them is the world famous gameseries THE ELDER SCROLLS. The brand THE ELDER SCROLLS is copyright protected for including different entertainment products and -services, something PC (I have no idea what it's supposed to say, Either my english is not good enough or the translation is to bad) - and videogames. Within EU (European Union) is my headchief (Talking about Zenimax/Bethesda) owner of the registered community trademarks with the registration number 2840098 and 8283161. It has come to attention to my headchiefs (Again, Zenimax/Bethesda) knowledge that Mojang AB ("Mojang") is using the protected sign SCROLLS with marketing for a upcoming computer and/or videogame (Talking about consolegame now). The protected sign SCROLLS exhibits significant visual, aural and conceptual similarities with my headchiefs trademark THE ELDER SCROLLS. These similarities strengthened by the fact that in the entertainment industry, including computer games industry, is common to goods and services with a common commercial origin are marketed under the sign which is constructed from a common brand elements. For example, the company Nintendo's world famous Mario series of games titles like Mario Brothers. and Super Mario Bros. or company Blizzard's Warcraft series of games titles like Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and the World of Warcraft. Thus, there is a clear risk to the average consumer to get the idea that goods and / or services provided under the sign SCROLL and The Elder Scrolls from the same commercial origin or at least from economically-linked undertakings. Against this background, it is our opinion that Mojangs use of the sign SCROLL constitutes an infringement of my headchiefs.
END (He only posted one page out of 15)

Why in the hell does the ticker keep saying I'm being mentioned in threads when I'm not? It's starting to get really annoying.
Works better in quotes on FF
Fixed.
Lawyers being lawyers, java being java, and the sky is still blue. More at 11. [editline]6th August 2011[/editline] Just hit me a bit, why would you be going on twitter saying that you're being sued. Why couldn't of he kept on the low-down on it.
So if I make a game called "The Adventures of Billy" I might get sued because "the" is already in the name of one of their games?
This is probably some rogue lawyer.
