• Notch being sued by Bethesda
Excuse me, but how LONG has the game been in BETA already?
Beta's just an arbitrary term for games like Minecraft. Technically it's still in Alpha since it "feature complete," but that doesn't really matter because people who bought years ago still enjoyed it as if it were a completed game. I don't really if Notch takes a long time to finish it, because I got my money's worth a long time ago.
Most people forget that Minecraft is even in Beta. It's basically a full game as it is, just with some bugs and updates to it pretty often. Anyways, this lawsuit is silly and probably won't go anywhere. I'm glad Notch is being impartial and mature about it, in any case.
If by impartial and mature you mean getting his zealots fired up
If by impartial and mature you mean getting his zealots fired up
It takes more effort to not do that than to do it. Just look at console wars.
It takes more effort to not do that than to do it. Just look at console wars.
The part where nobody decided it was a good idea to let a news site handle it instead of letting notch write is own report about it wasn't the best thing in terms of credibility and impartiality. This way, almost nobody except the incredibly shitty community that is the minecraft forums is out with this knowledge
@Crimor Actually I highly doubt that Mojang has a chance of loosing this case. Though that's in part due to Beth's past actions. They have always referred to the "The Elder Scrolls" as one singular title that is naturally bound together. Hence argument about similarities between various naming conventions between other games trademarks (Mario, Warcraft) fall somewhat short, as Beth has never explicited any of the elements of the title. Likewise their past naming conventions have included the entiriety of the title. Plus as a last bit of consideration - They are suing in the EU. That's a shitload different to suing in the US. Since in the EU the courts often proclaim the intelligent consumer and there's a lot of french influence on them. Which rarely leads to cases of someone suing because they got burned on a cup of scalding hot coffee. Like I've said. The law firm is following Zeni max company policy in trying to scare smaller studios from making use of any part of their copyright name. Most smaller upstarts will actually cave in.
I'm in the EU, as you can see by the flag, and I'd still say they have an open and shut case, not too well versed in swedish laws, but I still think the laws about publishing legal documents without consent exist in sweden too. And I believe, don't quote me on this, that beth actually has a trademark on "scrolls" too.
Very good. I hope Bethseda takes Notch to hell and back for this. Why Notch is attempting to steal the name of a respected franchise is pathetic.
This lawsuit is totally justified. I mean, look at the confusion it could cause: See?
Is that really the fucking collector's edition? God dammit. I don't want a fucking statue. I can't do anything with a fucking statue. Adding a statue ramps up the price a good 20 to 40$ for some shit I don't want and or need. Not only that but it's a statue of a god damn dragon? Really? I would have no fucking clue that had anything to do with Skyrim other than "Derp dragons!". I was really looking forward to their CE since the last Bethesda games have had such excellent editions, but holy shit do I hate useless CE statues.
Bethesda, this is NOT a smart move. Do NOT jeopardize Skyrim's hype... you don't want a bunch of angry Minecrafters boycotting it because you're suing their deity.
Notch still loves bethesda game studios and aslong as he recommends skyrim on his blog, his fans will be buying it.
ID Software master race

Like seriously are you fucking kidding me? :v:
... Then don't buy the CE? Like seriously are you fucking kidding me? :v:
I find the problem is that loads of other games include a soundtrack, making of, set of game maps, tips book, little figurines and .50 ammunition all at once in their collector's editions, while all you really get with that one is a badly printed map and a statue made out of arsenic and mercury, along with a book that teaches you how to summon murlocs to attack North Korea. Doesn't really seem worth the whole 140 dollaros you have to dump into it.
ID Software master race
I thought it was "id" as in did without a d.
I thought it was "id" as in did without a d.
No, of course not, don't be such an IDiot.
... Then don't buy the CE? Like seriously are you fucking kidding me? :v:
Trust me I won't. The reason I was so irritated was because I was excited for what the CE would be, since all previous Bethesda CEs have been really well done. And then we get a $150 art book and a dragon statue. Statues are seriously the laziest most unenticing thing you can base a collector's edition around. It's been done so.. [t]http://www.jamesindigital.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Uncharted-3-Collectors-Edition-Statue.jpg[/t] many.. [t]http://www.unigamesity.com/wp-content/uploads//2011/07/batman-statue-2.jpg[/t] fucking.. [t]http://www.destructoid.com/elephant//ul/48383-asscreedcollect.jpg[/t] times.. Put it on display in your man-cave? Shit like coins, or bobble heads or memorabilia you'd find in the game is something really cool and unique. A shitty PVC statue I would have thought was cool when I was thirteen is not.
Misleading thread title. They aren't being sued, they received a cease and desist notice. I doubt they'll take it any further. Keep in mind to that this would be handled by Bethesda's legal team, so those in charge of game development probably have little knowledge as to what's going on.
Even better if they put stuff from the game, like pip-boys, crowbars, a bottle of vodka, even a bloody cap would do just fine
Misleading thread title. How could you do this to me, Bethesda. I loved you...
snipp
blah blah notch sucks blah blah minecraft sucks blah blah bethesda sucks
Why are everyone like "OMGUH I TOUT BETHDA WUS BETTR DAN DIS"? Bethesda are NOTORIOUS copyright trolls. You'd be dead if you took a shot for every countersuit in Bethesda vs. Interplay case.
Why in the hell does the ticker keep saying I'm being mentioned in threads when I'm not? It's starting to get really annoying.
strengthened. You made a bad choice of Username.
same thing - bad stuff is going to happen if notch doesn't cease and desist
Not necessarily. It could simply be an attempt by Bethesda's legal team to bully Notch into changing the name. Major corporations like Bethesda probably send out a lot of notices like this to smaller developers. There's a damn good chance that this doesn't end up going anywhere. Especially in light of the bad press Bethesda is and surely will receive for this.
