the op article claims it's only recently derelict it doesn't look old in the photos
The plot thickens. Time to look up old really old Russian subs. It could be a Som like mentioned.
I've already looked that up, and at the moment can't say if it's Som or not. There're some similarities in the design, but available photos of this unknown sub aren't enough. Plus all the photos I found of Som type vessels are shit.
Some speculations have come forth saying it might be the Russian "Catfish" submarine that sank back in 1916. Pics of it match the description alright.
The dimensions are almost spot on as well.
the op article claims it's only recently derelict it doesn't look old in the photos
Bugged me as well. I've found pictures of Som class vessels that were made in 1930s and those look like absolute fucking shit [thumb]http://cdn.topwar.ru/uploads/posts/2012-11/1352431005_RPL18066.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://cdn.topwar.ru/uploads/posts/2012-11/1352431030_RPL18067.jpg[/thumb] These two, Sudak (pikeperch) and Losos' (salmon) were sunk and then lifted in 1930s. Look at how bad they look. Compared to them, this unknown vessel might as well have been sunk five years ago.
The dimensions are almost spot on as well.
"The submarine is about 20 meters long and three meters wide." The catfish is 20m / 3.5m so it fits perfectly.

I'm assuming the pictures of the wreak are only showing the conning tower so that's what I'm looking for.
"The submarine is about 20 meters long and three meters wide." The catfish is 20m / 3.5m so it fits perfectly.
Well, either way we either get an interesting old sub or we get some modern day shenanigans (or maybe something completely different).
the op article claims it's only recently derelict it doesn't look old in the photos
Nothing known in the Russian arsenal (or any modern navy for that matter) is that shape. Submarines are smooth and sleek to hide from sonar. If it's something new, it's something secret/unknown/experimental.
Quite a few sources also claim that all Soms were accounted for and scrapped, so unless there was an unknown eight sub it might not be probable. I wonder if its a prototype sub that went down, and whoever owned it was hoping no one noticed at the time, becuase a cursory glance at modern midget subs of the baltic nations/russia doesnt show any that fit the dimensions of this one.
I hope it's something strange. I'm sick of russia's dickwaving and the general shittyness of the world, I want something truly strange and exciting to happen.

Might've been some kind of experimental modification of which like [del]five[/del] (too optimistic) one was actually made and no pictures are available, there were a lot of shit lost due to the events that followed the October revolution. Design sure doesn't look modern to me. [editline]27th July 2015[/editline] I think we should all just accept the only truly possible explanation. It's aliens. There's no doubt about that now, after 10 minutes of abusing Google. No other explanation. It's aliens, they're aquatic in nature and it's their device to explore our civilisation. We have found them.
I hope it's something strange. I'm sick of russia's dickwaving and the general shittyness of the world, I want something truly strange and exciting to happen.
Aliens! As far as that sub goes, maybe it was a german pre ww2 prototype? Are there any records of stuff like that?
It seems really likely that this is either a Som or a modification of one, but what's it doing there and why's it appear pristine? If it's 100 years old it can't possibly have only been sunk recently, unless they just found it in a storeroom and thought it'd be funny to drive it around Sweden or some ridiculous shit.

Right photo from the russian Wikipedia
if it's a Som that's pretty crazy, how could it even be in such good shape?
If it is an old submarine, it is in absolutely excellent condition judging by the pictures. I added another to the OP.
would it be possible to be submerged that long and not accrue a bunch of algae and barnacles? genuinely curious
The sea it sits in is known for preserving wrecks very well, very bacteria free iirc, but still its really odd that its THAT clean. You can read up on the story about the swedish ship 'Vasa', a battleship from the 1600's that sank outside stockholm which was found almost 400 years later in extremely good condition

Note the font (Пескарь). Differences are also present, that tube/pipe-like structure next to cupola is missing on Som class.
How can it be a "catfish" submarine if they weren't made before the 1960s..
Early Catfish subs were named in an old Russian way - "Сомъ" with an ъ, and not just "Сом", thus I can confirm it's clearly one of them
Nvm wrong wiki page lel

All evidence points to it being nearly a century old, now the question is: how is it so well preserved?
https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%B2%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B5_%D0%BB%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BA%D0%B8_%D1%82%D0%B8%D0%BF%D0%B0_%C2%AB%D0%A1%D0%BE%D0%BC%C2%BB Could kinda looks like an M before that, so this would make a lot of sense.
Well to me it does. I'm sure it's "СОМЪ"... It has to be it.
Early Catfish subs were named in an old Russian way - "Сомъ" with an ъ, and not just "Сом", thus I can confirm it's clearly one of them
Problem is, "Сомъ" (actual name, not class-name) was found and scuttled, and it can't be class denotation as those aren't painted on the board.
I hope it's something strange. I'm sick of russia's dickwaving and the general shittyness of the world, I want something truly strange and exciting to happen.
as of right now we could technically call it a USO and be correct
Maybe someone decided to get a Som working once again, but to his demise, it failed him. :(
Problem is, "Сомъ" (actual name, not class-name) was found and scuttled, and it can't be class denotation as those aren't painted on the board.
Not according to Wikipedia, though? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Som-class_submarine
