• Unknown sunken submarine found off of the coast of Sweden

By the way, remember that these guys were the ones that claimed to have found a "mysterious" circular object under the ocean about a year ago. They've been trying to gain media attention a lot.
Found this page: http://russiatrek.org/blog/history/submarine-fleet-of-the-russian-empire/ The "Beluga" being a Som class. Question is, if they were scuttled in Estonia how did it end up in Sweden, and if they were scuttled so long ago, why is it in such good shape? :mystery:
Not according to Wikipedia, though? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Som-class_submarine
Yeah, I didn't check that particular article. By the way, found some info on circumstances of the collision. Russian wiki's article on that particular ("Сомъ") vessel says that it collided with some certain Swedish ship "Ingermanland", but no particular sources. Same story is repeated apparently all over the web if I try to search the name of the place where it happened, "somewhere near Olandshaf(???)"
The Som/Com(b) started as the Fulton It was shipped to Russia in 1904. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/SmcQ9sw.jpg[/img_thumb]
:mysterysolved: From 2014 http://uboat.net/forums/read.php?23,90033,90049,quote=1 "Som" repeatedly left on patrol at dawn, returned to base at dusk. On May 10, 1916 at 4 o'clock in the morning "Som" which was patrolling in the area of Olandsgaf, and was lost in an underwater collision with the Swedish steamship "Ingermanland". As the captain of a steamship has testified, he noticed a periscope, towering 1 m above the water, at a distance of 150 m. The boat went by on a parallel course, and then turned toward the steamship. Having decided, that it wanted to examine them, the captain stopped the ship. The periscope suddenly disappeared under water, and the boat struck the steamship below the waterline. The submarine was not seen again. In addition to the submarine, her crew - 2 officers and 16 bottom grades were lost." In that thread you can see one of the fucking Ocean X people asking questions about it. [editline]27th July 2015[/editline] Attention whoring by Ocean X Team as usual.
Could be drug smugglers. Colombians operate submarines to smuggle coke into the US all the time

still not convinced it is from 1916 if it is in as good of condition as they say it is. the briny baltic might keep wood ships in good condition since there are no woodworms but it fucks metal up pretty hardcore and those pictures we are seeing do not look like they have nearly enough damaging for being there for almost 100 years

I tired searching it out of interest, and the only thing that comes out is this story of this poor Som vessel.
Seems like the most likely candidate. My Only concerns are minor differences in the wreak pictures and the pictures of the Fulton. Fulton appears to have windows or intakes on the conning tower, and lacks the bell-shaped dome. Would be interesting to see pictures of it as the Som/Comb.
So is it or is it not Som? This would still be a pretty awesome find.
Most likely it is. There's a lot of stuff that points in that direction.

Cold saltwater will preserve metal fairly well, but this thing really looks like it only sank recently - there should be more detritus on it and a lot more surface rust.
did a little bit of looking into it, i guess it is viable for it to have not rusted very much at all, but it still seems very odd that it, according to the article, has very little damage

It has the exact same top structure as the one that was found. That's Sudak (Судакъ) though, not Som. The stated "little damage" bugs me though. The fucking thing sank after it collided with a steamship. How can it not be severely damaged?
I hope it's something strange. I'm sick of russia's dickwaving and the general shittyness of the world, I want something truly strange and exciting to happen.
I hope it's an alien sub that was investigating our world covertly, that'd be the most truly strange and exciting thing that comes to mind. Certainly better than Russia being arseholes or some dudes with cutting edge drone tech (unless said dudes are aliens of course).
Where the hell is Olandsgaf though? I tired searching it out of interest, and the only thing that comes out is this story of this poor Som vessel.
That would be Ålands hav. No idea why it's spelled so weird. Notice also how there's no archipelago in the marked area, which may explain how it managed to be so close to the coast. [editline]27th July 2015[/editline] It is definitely the sunken Som from 1916.
The stated "little damage" bugs me though. The fucking thing sank after it collided with a steamship. How can it not be severely damaged?
Maybe they didn't see where the hull was breached in the collision, and only saw the dents from hitting the sea floor / age?
Is it possible the thing is still holding air? If none of the hatches are open and there are no hull breaches... that'd be smelly. I do hope they attempt to recover it from the seafloor before popping any hatches as any possibly surviving paper items (particularly diaries, etc.) would be ruined by the water.
A Swedish submarine expert says he's sure it's the Som. And a former member of the Swedish defense says they've known about the coordinates for about 1 year.
Is it bad that I have the thought that opening that thing on the surface would be akin to opening a soda left in a car on a hot day.
It'd probably be really nasty but I'd prefer for someone to have to smell 100 years of decaying bodies than destroy any surviving artifacts by flooding the thing.
It'd probably be really nasty but I'd prefer for someone to have to smell 100 years of decaying bodies than destroy any surviving artifacts by flooding the thing.
Then they vomit all over the paper work.

[editline]27th July 2015[/editline] It is definitely the sunken Som from 1916.
It's probably like that because the source is unclear, it might be some really old-ass Russian documents, and the way we transliterated shit back then could really butcher said shit. I've found Оландсгаф in Russian and just went from there, and it turns out, English sources just transliterated it without research. Explains why I couldn't find anything other than articles that mention the damn vessel. Just like the steamer, which turns out was properly called "Angermanland" (which, again, explains the troubles I went through to find the damn thing), and was an unlucky ship: New York times reported on it bringing cholera to Petrograd in 1918.
The stated "little damage" bugs me though. The fucking thing sank after it collided with a steamship. How can it not be severely damaged?
Not hard to sink a sub if you ruin the ballasts. Doesn't take much.
Anyway, isn't it kinda fun that we have almost on our own identified the "unknown vessel" using just google, and turns out it was correct, and the guys who reported on it failed to do even that. Quality fucking research right there. Sensationalist as fuck.
Not hard to sink a sub if you ruin the ballasts. Doesn't take much.
I think it's just Ocean X Team being asses. Everything points to them already knowing what they were looking for. And then they find it and creates a spectacle out of it. Last time when they found the mysterious circle they claimed their electrical equipment started to malfunction and all that jazz. :v:
