How is hunting for sport a good thing?
It's fun.
It's fun.
so is rape but there are reasons I dont do it.
Eh whatever as long as he's not shooting people.
Doesn't mean that it's perfectly okay to just shoot a bear that's trying to sleep off the whitetail deer it just ate. Give it SOME chance to escape or bite your face off (depending on it's mood) before you shoot it.
Oh yeah im sure the bear gave the whitetail deer you used as an example "a chance" its not how nature works.
Uhm, even the barely matured black bears we have on Vancouver Island way over 400 Lbs.
Hunting is unfair. They have no chance to fight back. However, we need real meat and fur. This is just wrong though. It's like shooting someone sleeping.
poor wittle bear
I think the bear was pretty big if it deserved to be killed for being over weight.
It's fun.
If you find killing fun you're sick in the head.

There are plenty of meat sources from more plentiful animals. As for fur, synthetic furs are a better alternative. What these men did was barbaric.
how large was it's treasure horde?

Killing a cow or a bear. What's the difference? In both cases you're killing an animal.
The only controversy is that it was shot around it's den. Killing bears is not a controversy.
How is hunting for sport a good thing?
I didn't say it was a good thing. Just that I was okay with it.
tell that to the bears when they sneak into your house and kill you.
There's a difference between hunting for food and hunting for sport.

Oh, you're one of those guys. "You find *morally questionable act* fun/funny? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU???"
Calm the fuck down. There are rules and regulations in Hunting, it's not like the hunters shoot up the environment with miniguns cackling madly.
Not very sporting if you just kill a bear in its den. That's as bad as spawn killing.

I think killing for fun is well established "do not do" in the civilized world.
I think killing for fun is well established "do not do" in the civilized world.
Up until the early 20th Century, every civilized country in the world was proud to admit that they liked to go into the great outdoors and shoot a couple of God's creatures for fun and hang their stuffed heads as trophies. The only reason it's taboo now is because they went a bit overboard and endangered most of the creatures they hunted. Nothing to do with barbarism, it was just a matter of caring for the environment at the last minute.
I read the title as "Hug a bear, controversial kill". I was confused.

Back in the earlier years slavery was also encouraged. Does not make it right. Hunting for sport is barbarism, but then again America does have a lot of red necks who prevent progress.

I didnt know humans were blood thirsty and as dumb as bears.

One was shot for food. the other was shot because its fun.
Shooting a bear resting in it's den seems unsportsmanlike. I mean, I'm okay with hunting for sport, but that's cheating.
Honestly, I view hunting as a whole as unsportsmanlike. Oh, let's kill a bear WITH HIGH VELOCITY PIECES OF METAL. Hopefully you are skilled enough to hit it where it's bulletproof vest is weakest. /sarcasm
Personally I wouldn't have killed that bear, even if it came out of the den, just on account of how big it is. But obviously I'm not a hunter, and I don't have the same values as a hunter.

The "lol 'merica's got rednecks" argument has gotten incredibly stale and tiresome over these years. Come back when you have a real argument.
Doesn't matter where he killed it, it's still dead. I don't think it should have been killed for sport anyway, but as someone else said, if you were going to be murdered it wouldn't matter to you where it was
I think it's because in it's den, a bear is generally sleeping or resting, in no fit state to attempt to escape, and poses no real challenge.

Maayyyybbeee.
Killing animals is a questionable act, sure, but again, rules and regulations keep it from being the barbaric murderfest people seem to think it is. And in some places hunting is beneficial in keeping the wildlife population from going overboard and destabilizing the ecosystem.
EDIT: before anyone here thinks that I'm supporting hunting because I hunt myself, you're wrong. I live on an island and the closest I've ever been to an actual hunt is "Cabela's Dangerous Hunts" for the Xbox. Surprisingly good game.
As people get smarter the less they will entertain them selves with killing.
They do bus' a whole bunch of rabbits where I live, the fuckers breed like bacteria
They should have hunting contests for bull frogs. it will get peoples need to kil out of there system and they will protect the environment.
As people get smarter the less they will entertain them selves with killing.
So only stupid people hunt? That's a hideous generalization.
So only stupid people hunt? That's a hideous generalization.
no but you like strawmen. The more people get educated the more they will care about nature. niot to mention that over time there will be alternatives.

If an animal poses a threat to local humans or there is an over blown population of said species which is causing problems in the area then by all means. However simply killing an animal that has caused no problems and seems to have no intention of causing any then I feel that animals should simply be left alone and should be protected by law.
If you're gonna kill it, you're gonna kill it. I don't see what's wrong with him killing it in it's den when it was going to be killed anyways.
"why is it not ok for me to murder joe? he was going to die anyways"
