The cuts would represent between 4 per cent and 5 per cent of the Internet portal's overall staff, which totaled 14,100 at the end of September according to Yahoo's website. The layoffs come two years into Chief Executive Carol Bartz's tenure as Yahoo works to grow its revenue amid tough competition from Google Inc and Facebook. Technology blog AllThingsD wrote earlier this month that Yahoo planned to cut 650 employees, and the New York Times newspaper reported on Monday that the cuts could take place as soon as Tuesday. A source familiar with the situation said the New York Times report was accurate and that the cuts would mostly be in Yahoo's product group. Another source told Reuters that Yahoo planned to cut between 600 and 700 employees from the product group on Tuesday.
http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/TechandScience/Story/STIStory_613661.html
" Merry Christmas ! Now get the fuck out ! "
Yahoo! :smith:
How is this news? Companies cut down expenses by firing people like this all the time. They'll pull through, they always do.
Probably for how much of yahoo is automated now they probably need only 1 to 5 people in a department. Hell, even with stuff like gaming news they rip from other sites.
Google. :smug:
You really think a huge corporation like that will hesitate to fire people? Hah, even their sense of sympathy is automated.
All the more reason to fire people.
I can't tell if you're trolling or legitimately dumb.
Its sad because they still make a profit probably with those 600 people. Bastards.
How is this news? Companies cut down expenses by firing people like this all the time. They'll pull through, they always do.
Things like this are always, always news in the financial world. When it involves a well known company, the mainstream media scoops it up from the more reserved financial media and it gets front page attention. It's really not surprising in the least bit.
They merged with AOL. Those are probably just redundancies.
I can't tell if you're trolling or legitimately dumb.
It's Vinze, why are you so surprised at his stupidity? [editline]14th December 2010[/editline]
Dick move to think a career at a search engine is reliable.
Yahoo! is not solely a search engine.
I can't tell if you're trolling or legitimately dumb.
Think about it, what would you do if you were about to fire a bunch of people and didn't want a massive strike? [editline]14th December 2010[/editline]
It's Vinze, why are you so surprised at his stupidity?
Two kinds of people visit Facepunch - the normal kind, and arrogant losers compensating for their poor exsistance by lowering others. :smug:
Why would they strike? If you're firing people, you are showing the rest of the workers that they are disposable and easily replaced.
Why would they strike? If you're firing people, you are showing the rest of the workers that they are disposable and easily replaced.
Yeah, but if you give them raises, they think they're doing a good job. I think you got the order wrong. I meant: Fire, raise, prevent strike. Not strike, fire, raise, that would make no sense.
