People just hate change. Whether it be good or bad.
I don't even use the start menu. I just dock everything to the taskbar.
I remember when the first start menu came out for windows and everyone was complaining about that too. The windows 8 start menu is just better. The search function is really good and fast. I can find the programs i need faster.
Nah. It's broken. Broken by design, matter of fact.
what the hell does this mean? the start screen works perfectly
Nah. It's broken. Broken by design, matter of fact. Some things just work and don't need to be mucked with, yet Microsoft opted to muck with them anyway.
Far as I'm concerned Win8 doesn't exist. IF I have to buy and install a third party mod to get Windows to work like it's supposed to, and has for the past 20 or 30 years now, that version of windows is broken. It may work for you but to me it is and always will be a broken pile of crap that has no business on my hard drive.
Whatever dude. Go ahead, keep deluding yourself into thinking that you're right in boycotting a better product than everything Microsoft has put out before it, and that isn't just opinion. It is an improved, faster, feature-packed version of Windows 7.
The start menu is a 90's relic made for a time when people used monitors that had a maximum resolution of 640x480. It was practically full screen back then, screens kept on getting bigger and bigger and your eyes had to become fixated on 1/20th of your screen. No sense in that.
Your "hard earned" $40 is nothing to Microsoft.

I remember those people too. The bandwagon will die out eventually and people will realize they're being fucking retarded.
Who cares that the start menu takes up the whole screen, you're not using anything else anyway, and 8 is so much cleaner and faster seriously

The search feature has been fast since, dare I say it, Windows Vista.
The search feature has been fast since, dare I say it, Windows Vista.
It's a hell of a lot faster in Win8 I find. Likely due to the filtering of stuff causing it to prioritise where it searches first, so documents show up faster in a file search. 8.1 seems to fix my biggest gripe with the search, adding a desktop charms search and shortcuts to the different types.
Getting Win8 showed to me how little I used the start menu other than accessing folders and a few apps that I can now find just by tapping the windows key and typing the name of it.
Some features I dislike, such as the media player being a app and windows still being tetchy with dual monitors but there are workarounds to such problems that don't overly inconvenience me such as using a different media player.
Overall there is the odd time I miss certain XP features, but I'm glad I switched. My pc boots in less than 10 seconds rather than 5 minutes and Win8 works great on older hardware. I feel I made a better choice jumping to Win8 rather than going Win7.
I have been using 8.1 Preview for a while now and I haven't had too many problems with it. There were a few crashes of Explorer but they resolved themselves quickly. Other than that I haven't had anymore issues. I doubt that the RTM version will be much worse.
Plus this makes Windows 8 worth using: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/
StartIsBack is a lot better, and cheaper.

You can't pin a folder to the start menu[sp]/screen[/sp]. That's one of the things I missed when I had 8.

You can change the default 'app' to Windows Media Player. (Looks exactly the same as 7's)

Dual monitors worked fine for me. I actually like 8's support for them.

I can agree with the fact that there are certain XP/7 features missing in 8 (mainly more customisation options and the start menu), but there are features that make the system nice to use as a whole
(e.g. the dramatic performance increase).
I don't want to start a "Linux vs Windows" discussion because that isn't what this thread is for, but Microsoft should really take a leaf our of Linux's book and allow a sort of 'desktop environment' chooser/installer rather then forcing people [sp](those who dislike Metro and its counterparts)[/sp] to somehow have to use Metro on their system. [sp]This would never actually happen because M$ need a way to market their crappy store, and I could never actually see them doing such a thing anyway.[/sp]
Honestly, I think the way I can launch applications now is much better than the old start menu.
I just press the start button on my keyboard, type the first couple of letters of its name and mash enter.
Costs me about two seconds.

You could pin file explorer to the taskbar. Then you can pin folders to the file explorer in the bottom left just by dragging them onto it.
You can change the default 'app' to Windows Media Player. (Looks exactly the same as 7's)
Mind explaining how to do this? I've been using VLC media player instead currently.

Still lacking proper gaming support for differing resolutions though. Fullscreen game on one and a different resolution than the desktop and the other screen messes up.
Makes it difficult for people such as myself who don't have two screens with the same resolution options. (I have a 1920x1080 and a 1024x768.)

Right click the .mp3 or whatever other media format it is (not .ogg though), "Open with..." then choose Windows Media player. Make sure the checkbox at the bottom of the window is ticked.

That's a problem with the game, not Windows. Some games don't support certain resolutions (e.g. one of the older games I play supports 4:3 screen ratios only)

The problem is not with the games, the games display correctly on the primary screen, if I play fullscreen in a resolution not the same as my desktop, the second monitor is affected and things are thrown off the screen and so on, it's as if the desktop shrinks.
If I play fullscreen borderless windowed it doesn't happen at all regardless of resolution, if I play fullscreen at 1920x1080 it doesn't happen. If I were to play at some other resolution it messes up the screen though.
The only other way I can think to get around this is to run separate gfx cards but I can't afford to do that.

Left Desktop is 1920x1080, Right is 1024x768, Game is at 1280x720 fullscreen not windowed - Notice how my Chrome was shoved off screen on the opposite monitor. This happens with all applications, not just Chrome.

And it doesn't restore the position of Chrome when you leave the game? I always found (at least when playing Tremulous) that my second monitor isn't affected.
[editline]25th August 2013[/editline]
And my Garry's Mod runs in noborder at 1920x1080 so it's technically not "fullscreened" although it appears so.
