I heard they're going to release a new service
Games for Windows 8
Games for Bing!
Games for Bing!
powered by the unlimited infinite bottomless wellspring power of the magical The Cloud™
Hurrah!
GTAV will be out by then so you'd have no reason to actually play GTAIV
Sure let me just go and pre-order GTAV on PC- oh.
This means Dark Souls MP is going down, too? Along with GTA4's?
won't ds2 and gta 5 be out by then?
hardly anyone will be playing MP in the old games by that point in any case
How did ANY developer/company think that GFWL was an added bonus for their game???
It let you talk to Xbox users and you could get achievements through Xbox which = greater gamerscore to show off.
Idk but the new GFWL is simply called XBOX on Windows and you can only play XBOX on Windows games through metro so it won't ever make a return hopefully
Multi thief auto team needs to get to work on GTA4/EFLC

Demon's Souls still has a large MP community and Dark Souls succeeded it ages ago. I highly doubt DS2 will take everybody away.

That's no excuse for breaking older games.

bwahahahaha
What a short lifespan. SFxT will only have a two year run on PC before its forced into retirement.
How did ANY developer/company think that GFWL was an added bonus for their game???
The service on paper was good. Integration with XBL, use existing hotmail/Live accounts, competitor with Steam (although could coexist) etc. The service in terms of execution was bad.
it's bound to be replaced with something better, hence why that Valve guy joined up
It'll just join into Windows 8 Marketplace most likely. It is unfortunate Microsoft has never seen the value of their back catalog though. It was never possibly to buy shit like Midtown Madness titles or even the FSX games online.
So more than likely, if as the documentation says, all of these games are permanently retired, then MSFT is cutting its losses and will just push titles onto Windows Marketplace or stop making games themselves for Windows entirely (which is unfortunate).
Rest in piece flight simulator.
all the old games will be dead dead because emulating windows live matchmaking will be impossible
they should make it the next google x programming challenge

Also GFWL used Xbox points IIRC (same as Xbox) which were region specific which was stupid. I recall trying to buy DLC for a game once and it not working because of where I lived.
The new Xbox is supposed to stop all of that, and everything is just paid for with actual cash (like Steam).
Also, being tied to an email address which permanently gives you a username for the service is very annoying; at least on Steam you can change your name whenever you want and the username is just something "under the hood".

Of course, there's not a lot of money made from their back catalog and you don't make money supporting it for free.

Nobody will give a damn for this, it's a shit port of a booed game which is a torture to play online.

Wait, dead
As in flat out unplayable, forever
What the fuck is that, how can someone do that
That's like pointing to a few games in someone's collection for the Xbox and saying "yeah, you can't play those anymore, period."
That's fucking bullshit. I paid money for those games, I should play them whether or not.
Just get enough people to contact developers to update the games and then maybe they'll update their games.
Of course, there's not a lot of money made from their back catalog and you don't make money supporting it for free.
It is more that Microsoft's strategy has always been to push their platforms/devices etc and keep propping them up with money the entire time hoping they work. Either that or they just don't care about PC gaming at all (more than likely).
If they'd ditched GFWL earlier and just put a few of their titles on Steam they actually would've made some money.
Lately though, they have been all over the place (if the xbone is anything to go by) going back and forth on things; it was really disappointing when they put out that new shitty version of MS Flight simulator (the "Flight" one that was on Steam) and then just pretty much killed it not long after.
someone reminded me
we will lose our GTA IV/EFLC savegames, stats, progress, etc...
You can play it offline with xlive.dll and enjoy it like that.

And just a few months ago, there were actual people (yes, Microsoft employees are people too) were saying that the Xbox One was actually a good idea.

Well if developers don't release a patch transitioning to steamworks or another multiplayer infrastructure, offline services will remain, at least.
Plus when you installed all of those games you probably agreed to ToS which most likely mentioned that they can turn off whatever they desire, whenever they desire.

The Xbox One didn't kill GfWL, Microsoft having no god damn idea what to do with it did (It was replaced in Windows 8 anyway)

?
Well you brought up the Xbox One, so I thought that's what you were getting at.
Well you brought up the Xbox One, so I thought that's what you were getting at.
I meant the always online component of the Xbox One, if Microsoft is killing these games why should anyone have trusted with them with a whole device? (Though the axing of the always online may have contributed yet another nail into the GFWL coffin).
Will this affect Dawn of War 2 and Chaos Rising? I remember having to log into GFWL even just to play the campaign.
Online and skirmish-wise Retribution has all the content from those two and it's Steamworks
You'll still be missing the singleplayer though

Anything about GFWL shutting down has been removed from the page. I think they will announce something at gamescom at their private conference 5 and a half hours from now.
Must have accidentally released information a day early. Would also explain it being the only evidence that exists for GFWL shutting down.
I really hope a lot of these games (GTA4, Dark Souls, red Faction Guerrilla, etc) will still work in Steam offline after the service ends. Would be a shame not to be able to play them anymore due to DRM ending.
