Too fat to fight? Many American children are so overweight from being fed french fries, pizza and other unhealthy foods at school lunchrooms that they cannot handle the physical rigors of being in the military, a group of retired officers say in a new report. National security is threatened by the sharp rise in obesity rates for young people over the last 15 years, the group Mission: Readiness contends. Weight problems are now the leading medical reason that recruits are rejected, the group says, and thus jeopardize the military's ability to fill its ranks. In a report released Tuesday, the group says that 9 million young adults, or 27 percent of all Americans ages 17 to 24, are too fat to join the military. The retired officers were on Capitol Hill advocating for passage of a wide-ranging nutrition bill that aims to make the nation's school lunches healthier. The military group acknowledges that other things keep young adults out of the armed services, such as a criminal record or the lack of a high school diploma. Although all branches of the military now meet or exceed recruitment goals, retired Navy Rear Adm. James Barnett Jr., a member of the officers group, says the obesity trend could affect that. "When over a quarter of young adults are too fat to fight, we need to take notice," Barnett said. He noted that national security in the year 2030 is "absolutely dependent" on reversing child obesity rates. Recruitment isn't the only problem posed by obesity. According to the report, the government spends tens of millions of dollars every year to train replacements for service members discharged because of weight problems. This isn't the first time the military has gotten involved in the debate over school lunches. During World War II, military leaders had the opposite problem, reporting that many recruits were rejected because of stunted growth and inadequate nutrition. After the war, military leaders pushed Congress to establish the national school lunch program so children would grow up healthier.
oh nooooooooooooooo
Im assuming Arnold Swarcheneggers plan didn't work out... And not just the health bill
Send them anyway, Work the fat off of them!
Didn't the military already have to add another week of BT (Basic Training) because they knew about this already? I'd like to know Big Dumb American's opinion about this.
make them work harder in boot camp to make them lose weight.
They won't need body armor.
RAMIREZ Get these kids in shape.
Use fatties as raw construction material Use the now unused materials for robots to take their place
Tax soda and chips. Now tell tea party. Watch Civil War II.
Hah, there was this fat kid in one of my classes signing up for the Marines.
I'm too fat to serve in the military by a few pounds, so I never need to worry about a draft. Or are the limits not that solid?
Not new stuff for America. Shitty parents, that is.
Way to over dramatize shit.
I am not that fat but I do weigh like 160 lbs
Get the fuck off the bandwagon folks. Most of the kids in America aren't fat fucks. Just the ones who have shitty ass parents who don't understand a fucking thing about parenting. THOSE are the kids that are the fat ones.
Hold a twinkie in front of them while driving a hummer and make them run for it.
But the fat ones will raise fat offspring of their own. Assuming they can get laid

1 in 4? What the hell, where do they get these statistics? They probably drive around in ice creme trucks asking kids if they wanna join the military.
I don't get French Fries or 'other unhealthy' foods at my lunch room :C
Rise taxes. Expensive food = less fatties
They won't need body armor.
Hm. The bullets only pierced the first layer of fat.
Kids are not fully grown. I use to weigh 290, until I turned 15. At age 15 I took it upon myself to lose weight, now I weight 175 pnds, which is just 15 pounds above average for my height which is 6 ft. Let the kids grow up. (i'm 17 now, so it took me a while, but worth it.)
America Sucks. I'm not trolling either, being born and raised here i've learned that. Recently it's been reinforced due to my school getting some exchange students from Germany and France. Same age, all sophomores, and they even blow a good amount of our seniors away knowledge wise. Thankfully not every American is like this- just a vast majority. But i will admit, i see mostly fat people where i live, but i don't see constant OBESE people, i just see a lot of chubbies.
Rise taxes. Expensive food = less fatties
Wrong. It only results in people not being able to afford healthy food or food in general. Unhealthy food is the cheapest most of the time.

if the military takes these kids, their ranks will swell i tried
When I lived in the states the food I got at my high school was(and probably still is) terrible. The eggs looked more like sponges than anything else, and it was cooked by tired looking middle aged lunch ladies. In Canada however, working in the cafeteria is a course you can take. The food is cooked for the students and by the students, so it obviously tastes much better.
Maybe this will end the war on terror!
Has anyone here been to Disneyland? Did you see the supposed "1 in 3 people are obese"? I didn't, probably 1 in 20, and when I'm walking around or something, It certainly isn't "1 in 3" people are obese.
