Didn't you just say it's cut off from the rest of China? So the locale wouldn't matter, would it?
Its cut off in the fact that the economy and the law are run differently. It still trades with the rest of China and deals with the lack of industry therein.
All of China is miserable but equal and some in Hong Kong are extremely affluent while the rest are moderately well off.
What about Dubai? and the fact that Hong Kong citizens live in absolute squalor.
Why do you consider wealth equality such an important thing?
Because it's a fundamental right of human beings to not live in economic oppression?
Because it's a fundamental right of human beings to not live in economic oppression?
not with capitalism it's not lol

As did the Soviet Union who had similar programmes, not saying it means anything good, but they do have strong industry.
Strider*, please, explain why scandanavian countries can do so well and be so socialist?

I'm expecting an answer along the lines of "Scandinavian countries are pathetic, useless countries so who cares"
Strider*, please, explain why scandanavian countries can do so well and be so socialist?
Ha. First of all it simply isn't true, Scandinavian countries for years have been scaling back their socialist programs as entrepreneurs left for the freer economies of Europe such as Germany. Scandinavian countries are not as socialist as you make them out to be.

It should be noted that the USA has a higher GDP per capita than any of your Scandinavian countries other than Norway who actually have a lower standard of living when you factor in income after taxes and cost of living. [editline]4th March 2011[/editline]
Ok so explain how Scandinavian countries have been historically very well off, then.
Luxembourg and Lichtenstein have been better off, both free market havens. [editline]4th March 2011[/editline]
Ok so explain how Scandinavian countries have been historically very well off, then.
They have a mixed economy with largely free market elements.
Cost of living is BETTER in Scandinavian countries. GDP does not take into account standard of living or wealth distribution. You know what does? Human Development Index 1. Norway 0.876 (steady) 2. Australia 0.864 (steady) 3. Sweden 0.824 (increase 6) 4. Netherlands 0.818 (increase 3) 5. Germany 0.814 (increase 5) 6. Switzerland 0.813 (increase 7) 7. Ireland 0.813 (decrease 2) 8. Canada 0.812 (steady) 9. Iceland 0.811 (increase 8) 10. Denmark 0.810 (increase 9) 11. Finland 0.806 (increase 5) 12. United States 0.799 (decrease 8) [editline]4th March 2011[/editline] And Hong Kong ain't on there boyo [editline]4th March 2011[/editline] And looky who's decrease

You look pretty bad when you keep getting very easy things blatantly wrong. And both Luxembourg and Lichtenstein are incredibly small, so they don't really count. Lux has a pop of ~500k and Lich of ~32k. Weren't you the one making the argument about how smaller countries aren't comparable, anyways?
Fuck off with wealth distribution, it has no place in your arguments. Standard of living is also pretty worthless, sure they have moderately okay health services at the cost of extremely high taxes and a very high cost of living.

No, you fucking lunatic, it DOES. when you have shitty wealth distribution, you have shitty standards of living. And moderately okay health services? You mean the same countries who rank in the top 10 while the US ranks in the fucking 40's?
No actually I wasn't but you seem to be using the same argument now, hypocrite.
Actually I never said people shouldn't use that argument. It's valid for comparing countries like the USA and, say, Denmark, where there's an order of magnitude difference, but when the population is sub-million stats start to get skewed more easily. There's also the fact that Lux or Lich, one of them, is a tax haven which would way skew the results.
In EVERY single index you've referenced, Scandinavian countries have ranked far higher then the US as well as Hong Kong.

Oh but what does the US rank highest in? Healthcare expenditures Prison population Infant Mortality
"Well at least we don't have to pay outrageous amounts of money to live comfortably like those Americans... oh wait"
"Well at least we don't have to pay outrageous amounts of money to live comfortably like those Americans... oh wait"
Funny how those people apparently make less and have to pay more, yet rank better in almost every single ranking of life quality than America. How's that free market capitalism working out for you now, huh?
Something that's NOT 5 years old, pls?
It's the most recent from this source. Nice try at an argument though bro.

It hasn't changed that much over the past five years I'm sure.. look at disposable income. Most of the Scandinavian countries would need massive changes to match the United States. I don't agree with how some of these are determined however. We don't have a public health care system in the United States and thus when ranked we will of course rank much lower because we aren't "providing" for our citizens. None of the other indexes include the determination of disposable income. The middle class is still better off in the United States.

You don't have to buy pointless shit to distract you from your crappy life when you don't have a crappy life. And the middle class is shrinking in America, not getting better off. And no, we rank worse because our health care is poorer.
