I've been really impressed by the number and quality of the submissions so far. We've gotten letters from students in more than 20 countries. Seeing the way young people think about the world reinforces my optimism about the future. Here are a few excerpts from my favorite submissions:

Innovations and technology must ensure that the farmers in India are able to work easily and provide them with some sort of relief. It must bring in an innovative way to spread education; basic and good educational foundations must be laid for technology to have any kind of impact.

Women are the single most valuable economic resource in the world. Any economist will tell you that knowledge capital is the only sure investment an economy can make, as it does not experience diminishing returns. The education of girls and women will not only benefit them, but their children, family, and then their country. An increase in the proportion of a nation's women with a secondary school education largely increases that nation's annual per capita income.

Illiteracy is not the leading cause of death anywhere, but with more educated and creative people in the world I feel that many problems could be solved. Essentially then, you are building a legacy, not of aid, but of empowerment. You are giving people the tools to set themselves free. When you build a school you are giving people the power to solve both the long-existing problems of yesterday and the unforeseen ones of tomorrow.

A big part of the reason why I write my letter is that I hope to get people talking about issues facing the world's poorest--about all the lives smart investments have already changed, and about all the lives they will change in the future. My letter comes out January 25 and I hope you'll read it and let me know your thoughts. And if you have ideas for how you’d change the world, send me your annual letter. You can submit your letter to annualletter@gatesfoundation.org. The video below gives you more information about what we're looking for.
http://www.impatientoptimists.org/Posts/2012/01/Hearing-From-Students-on-Pressing-World-Issues?WT.ms_id=1_19_2012_StudentAnnualLetters_tw&WT.tsrc=Twitter
This is the epitome of "idea guys". There is a reason that teenagers' "answers to world problems" aren't looked at seriously, especially since 99% of them have been suggested a million times (sometimes literally).
stop thinking positive you yuppie pinkos you're supposed to think on how to be shitty or really badly shitty
Or maybe they should focus on things they can actually accomplish themselves rather than vague optimism like "I think there should be more education".
A proper American Center-Left party in addition to the current 2 would change the world forever.
Bill Gates - what a guy. Anyways, I reckon - as with most other letters - there needs to be more education. But not for the kids, but for the older people, so that when (if) they come into a position of power, they best know how to use it. I mean, when you look at, say, Lamar Smith, leading congressman in support of SOPA, you just know he has no idea how the Internet works. So perhaps it'd be best to continue education further through someone's years, so they can keep up with modern technologies and know not to dictate them without understanding of them.
All rich people should be like him.
All rich people should be like him.
If they were like Bill Gates to begin with, they wouldn't be rich people.
we need to switch to a zombie based economy a colleague of mine is currently funding giant turbine research, where zombies will be left to spin the giant turbines like a hamster wheel by dangling cow brains infront of them so we can harness the energy drawn out by the motions of the zombies and turbines this will greatly reduce the need for crude oil
