Chelsea Manning on Obama's 'shortlist' to commute prison sentence
If he did commute manning I would say it should be based on how she was treated in the system more than what crime she committed. Its basically an embarrassment to the country's reputation (haha I know right?) that this stuff is okay
Manning was treated the same as ANY OTHER prisoner in the military prison. This isn't Abu Gharib, or Gitmo.
if you genuinely seriously no-bs think that someone deserves this kind of punishment for such a "crime" you are genuinely seriously no-bs fucked in the head.
manning should be released and given asylum in a country where you aren't chased for something like this lol
Sorry son, but when you violate the UCMJ as well as providing enough information about operations that correspond to national security, no matter how dirty they are you're still violating your obligation to no release said information that the enemy could a hold of.

Sounds like our general prison practices are totally fucked in the head, solitary confinement is torture.

Maybe on a state and private level. Many of them are typically designed to keep problematic prisoners away from each other or ones deemed dangerous.
Manning's case is she's attempting suicide, several times and the end result they need to separate her and keep a constant watch to make she she doesn't attempt it again. No offense either but this is what Manning's normal cell looks like.

Keeping in mind this a bare cell, but this is far from the outrageous claims that there's mistreatment.

solitary confinement for 35 years is arguably torture, regardless of the room's accommodations.

For some people, particularly people that suffer from some form of severe depression or post-trauma (like trans people!), a few weeks in solitary confinement can have very apparent and serious detrimental effects to someone's mental health.
solitary confinement for 35 years is arguably torture, regardless of the room's accommodations.
For 35 years yeah that is bad. But, she's was placed in solitary for an indefinite amount of time because of these past attempts. That doesn't mean she's in there for the duration, but she's in there till the chaplains and psychologist actually deem she's not a threat to her own well being. No offense on it but if you've failed several attempts on your own life, you going to be watched for a very long time in any prison.
Maybe she keeps trying to kill herself because she's in prison!
Maybe she keeps trying to kill herself because she's in prison!
Or trying to garner attention to stay relevant in the media so they hear her story? I don't hear of any other suicide attempts by prisoners in solitary from Leavenworth, maybe they're not worth publishing a news story about despite them undergoing the same treatment.

If someone's trying to kill themselves because of the conditions they're in, making their conditions worse seems like a counter-productive way of making them not want to kill themselves.

Oh come on. Are you really suggesting that Manning is attempting suicide for media attention?
It's really not that far of a reach of a conclusion to suggest that Manning's suicide attempts are directly linked to the severe mental trauma she endures due to multiple prolonged incarcerations in solitary and her pre-existing conditions linked to her gender dysphoria.
Sounds like our general prison practices are totally fucked in the head, solitary confinement is torture.
It's also the only answer to what we can do with some prisoners. For suicidal prisoners it's used because the rooms are suicide-proofed and have cameras in them. More commonly it's used for prisoners who cannot be trusted to live among the prisoner population, either because they're running a criminal enterprise inside the prison, or because they've tried to or successfully killed an inmate or guard.
Chelsea Manning released information showing war crimes committed by the US military. Nobody talks about that, though. The primary focus is to make an example out of her to intimidate other potential whistleblowers into silence.
The overwhelming majority of the documents Chelsea Manning released were utterly irrelevant to whistleblowing, ranging from politically embarrassing embassy cables to the identities of coalition informants and translators, because she had no idea just what was contained in the hundreds of thousands of documents she stole and gave directly to Wikileaks. Nobody talks about that, though. The primary focus is to depict her as a freedom-loving martyr because she did something stupidly misguided while grappling with identity issues.
I'm strongly opposed to the way she's been treated in prison, but the way some of you guys talk you'd think she compiled the worst of the worst US atrocities, vetted every one to ensure nobody would be harmed by their release, and hand-delivered them to Wikileaks so they could be responsibly disseminated. That's horseshit, and any discussion of commuting her sentence that leaves out crucial facts about her actions is dishonest.
blame wikileaks for releasing it without redactions, not her
Part of the reason why Snowden went to journalists that could be trusted to sift through the files and publish them without compromising names/aliases/etc..
It was largely the outright dumping of files by Wikileaks; there should have been oversight.

Yeah, that's why suicidal people attempt suicide. We don't really wanna die, we're just attention whores!
That's the most fucking ignorant, awful, shitty thing I've ever read from you here.

I'm sorry, but the resources Manning has access to in the prison are far great than some people have on the outside to deal with their imprisonment. Despite this she has attempted several times to commit suicide, only to be thrown into solitary for her own protection. Suddenly we have media outlets report of horrendous treatment of Manning despite this, sorry my view is that it's a desperate attempt to keep herself in the spotlight and justify their struggle.
despite putting lives in danger, 35 years is still huge and unnecessary for a punishment of that caliber. some people don't buy it and want her to stay in prison, but i guarantee if you were in her shoes you would want to be let out just as much. at the end of the day, unless people died because of it, being put through the years already served seems enough.
just grasping the concept of serving 35 years in a room like that...christ

Again you're assuming Manning is locked in solitary for 35 years, despite it being a determined time before they actually let her back out in the general population.

Oh of course, people never commit suicide as long as they have resources to deal with their shitty situations, never happens. As long as depressed people get help it's got a 100% success rate!

Because solitary is mistreatment for suicidal people as it only proves to be a detriment to mental health.
nice casual trans hate lol
Is this ironic? Because you know that Bradley deserves that 35 year sentence for fucking up how he whistleblow'd, unlike Snowden
Could someone fill me in, who is Bradley?

No, I don't know, but even if she did it doesn't change that she is Chelsea Manning, not Bradley Manning

Okay? I don't really care about what I call them
(User was banned for this post ("Shitposting" - rilez))
Why must Manning be deliberately misgendered in every thread about her? Give the bigotry a rest, please.
Anyway. I'm glad there's a chance for her sentence to be commuted. 35 years, even in gen pop, screws a person up if it doesn't kill them.

It's ok to be a bigot if I don't like them!!
Because solitary is mistreatment for suicidal people as it only proves to be a detriment to mental health.
And leaving her in gen pop to attempt suicide until she succeeds is the better option?

Shame that's the Leavenworth STATE Penitentiary, not the US Disciplinary Barracks.

Not exactly easy to get pictures of because it's a federal installation.
And leaving her in gen pop to attempt suicide until she succeeds is the better option?
No it's about the same. I'd say house arrest with monitored communications is probably the best option.

B-but she's suicidal... And I'm suicidal (even though I have literally 0 understanding of the situation or the conditions, gotta shoehorn in -my- problems you know)! Can't you see punishing her is wrong!!

I don't think so? What's your solution, not have her in prison for a serious crime she committed?
